Screens and scans of the upcoming Soul Calibur spin-off for the Wii have flowed freely as of late, but now you can finally get a chance to see it in action. And I do use the term "action" very loosely, as only the most simple of gamers will be impressed with this exciting new trailer. I LOVE Soul Calibur 2, and I've been a diehard fan of Soul Edge since it first hit arcades so very long ago
What I have a problem with is that the game looks like nothing more than a generic hack and slash, but unlike Genji 2, it does even look good enough to put up with the dull gameplay or what is sure to be some infuriatingly underwhelming controls. Yes, Wii functionality was cool in WarioWare, but if Twilight Princess taught hardcore gamers anything it's that you simply can't experience the same type of complex game mechanics as you can in Ninja Gaiden or even the Soul Calibur games themselves by thrusting your Wiimote in all directions.
I hereby dub thee the Mortal Kombat Mythologies of the Soul Calibur world. What a waste...
Eh, I always was a fan of mind-numbing hack-and-slashes. I just think killing hordes and hordes of unknown, no-named people/things is just simple fun. I'll give it a chance. :D
I'd like to see more and hear some actual hands-on impressions before going so far as to call it the next Mortal Kombat Mythologies, but I'm not keeping my hopes too high.
I really don't think it's that hard to make games like this fun. You just need keep the gameplay tight, create about 20 types of enemies with different strengths/weaknesses/attacks/defenses, work insome easy combos and some projectile moves, never have the environements be as small as one screen, and keep "hit config on".
Developers fail to do this so frequently that it boggles my mind. The TMNT game, every Marvel game since the Avengers, most DC games, actually just about every lisenced game.
If Namco doesn't phone this one in, it will be at least good for some fun with the girlfriend.
Why doesn't anyone ever learn from others mistakes. Do none of these developers remember what happened when Mortal Kombat tried to be anything else but a fighting game?
The control set up has potential but the level design and enemy behaviors... I bought a Wii for its potential. I've been waiting and waiting all the while knowing what the system can do. It looks more and more likely I'll just have to do something about it! First fix sonic then give the bird the Namco for this crap. Where is my note book or vengeance!?
The motion sensing can work in a serious adventure game--All it requires is applying the Wiimote's motion sensing as a 3D analog stick. Instead of making it so that you have to perform the movement of your character, how about just keeping it so that you have your up, down, left, right, forward, and backward motions that translate to attacks in the respective directions?
Red Steel's sword play sucked monkey balls, and Twilight Princess left a little to be desired in the swordplay department in my opinion. Hopefuilly this learned for those past experiences.
Of course, compared to the PS3 and the 360, any game coming out on the Wii is going to look like someone vomited on crap, wrapped it in a plastic bag and threw it at someone's mother... but we can't hold that against it.
Man... my descriptions are pretty graphic today. I better stop before I get beat down like when a puppy falls down a cliff and...
I'm skeptical about this, considering Namco's rather shoddy history with these types of games. All of their Tekken beat-em-ups got boring really really fast, despite some unique features.
I'm not going to expect anything much from this game.
Didn't they say that they would make your Wiimote sword swings look exactly in-game as you did it with your remote? I just saw the generic wrist flicks and Siegfried doing a freaken flip slash.
Pulga, Windwaker is the one game that was slammed by "naysayers" for a different reason. Nintendo showed off a realistic Zelda tech demo before, then came out with the cel-shaded WW to the disappointment of everyone, everywhere.
The majority of the hatred pre-release was towards the art style, not the gameplay. Legends not only looks bad, but it looks like it plays bad too. Plus, it's basically a given that Wii controls do NOT equal good controls.
I must have been watching another video. How does this look like it plays bad? It already looks like better swordplay than Zelda. I can see your worries though. The gameplay looks as if it could have that clunky repsonse that ruins a lot of gameplay but still, you kinda wrote it off a bit easily.
Narcosis - Three vertical strikes with the wiimote equalled three vertical strikes in game.
What's that sound? *slurrrp Slurrp* oh its just everyone blowing Haley's opinion.
I agree with Rosseh. For someone (like me) who only owns a Wii, I am liking what I see. And for someone who HASN'T played the game already (unlike Mr. Haley ;D ), I am hoping for the best with this one. I guess I'm just a sucker for hack n' slash, oh and fun games for the Wii.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Wait... you haven't. ;)
Meh.
I'll wait and play it (like William clearly has . . . Oh, you haven't?) before I pass my judgement.
Negativity becomes you, Bill. It's dreamy.
The controlls for this game? DO NOT WANT!

Same goes for Umbrella Chronicles.

So have I; difference is I learned not to judge a game by a video after Wind Waker came out and owned all the naysayers.
Point is, give the game a chance before writing sensationalist stories about it. It's the least you could do.
