First PSP game to hit 3.5 million: Monster Hunter photo

You already knew that the Monster Hunter series is big in Japan, but now it's the biggest as far as the PSP is concerned.

Capcom has announced that Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (or Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G) has hit the 3.5 million sold mark in Japan, making it the only PSP game to hit that sales mark. The game originally hit the Japanese stores last year to see huge sales, but has since gone on to be repacked as one of their "PSP the Best" games, adding another 1 million to last year's totals.

I don't think they're done here, though. As you know, the US version, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, has just shipped. Both Nick and I are playing it for an upcoming Destructoid review now. It may not be as big here as it is in Japan, but I think that in the long run, the title will continue to break records.

Monster Hunter is a beautifully done series, and one of my favorite things to play. I can hardly wait for Monster Hunter Tri.

I have to say, although it's a great game and I loved the PS2 versions and the idea of teamwork is great, the PSP version is awkward to handle I find with the PSP's "analogue stick".

I'm in love with Monster Hunter. I'm considering doing a series on it as I play through it, while it's all still fresh for me. I'm through several wyverns now and there's plenty of good tales to tell.

I really need to get this game. But do you have to play multiplayer? Or can you play it solo?

@Grandmas Boy: can definitely sink hundreds of hours playing this game by yourself. Multiplayer is just a very nice and fleshed out addition. In fact, some people play the multiplayer quests ALONE, because they want to be THAT MUCH MORE badass (they are fucking difficult compared to their solo counterparts).
