First PS4 rumor points to backwards compatibility photo

Gamer.tm says that Sony is looking for a software engineer to deal with backward compatibility for both the PS3 and an unnamed next-gen console. Next-gen console, huh? Unless Sony has changed their naming scheme, this would probably be the PlayStation 4. Don't quote us on that, though.

It is said that they're looking for an engineer to implement and optimize emulation software for not only the  PS1 and PS2,  but the PSP and PS3 on both formats as well.

Although nothing is confirmed, it's interesting to think that Sony is far enough along on something new to be thinking about backwards compatibility. And (some) PS3s have it already, so what else could they be working on? PSP games on PS3?

It seems kind of odd that Sony would pursue backwards compatibility in the next generation when they've been so iffy about it in the current one.

Sony, while you're at it, why don't you get someone on PS2 Remote Play functionality for PSP. I need that more than a PS4 right now.

It's too early to be talking about PS4s now, right? What about the "10 year plan?"

PS3 is a flop and sony knows it might as well go back to the drawing board.

So does that mean we can stop referring to the current consoles as next-gen then??

They wouldn't call the PSP2 a "next gen console" would they?

R&D never stops people. You always think about new stuff even after you release a brand new console. Its just how technology works. Don't for a second think that Microsoft is not working on their next console or Nintendo either.

PS3 a flop ... you must be kidding ... they had a slow start ... but it's getting better every month and with the BR format ... it will boost the sales of the PS3

Wow, so I guess the 360 is a flop as well as about 1 or 2 weeks ago there was a front page article about MS and the stuff behind a new console. (I own a PS3, not a 360)

You sir, or m'am, are flop.

@Michiyoyoshiku:

Actually, just the opposite. It's obvious that the console must be profitable(or will be), or there would be no future endeavors into the field. Same for MS and Nintendo, as if they had "failed" there would be hesitation to go ahead and fund another venture. Besides, what do you think the R&D department does after a console is released, just sit around collecting a paycheck doing nothing? Some business sense would help you for future commenting.

P.S. I do not own a PS3

It would be nice if they admitted their mistakes with the PS3 and just started on a new one.

$600 for a ps4 with ps3 backwards compatibility, $400 for a ps4 without it.

Oh and it will be next-gen because it will come with huge hdd's for the downloadable HD movies! ;)

So I guess Ill buy a PS4 if I can play all PS1/2/3 titles there. That means if they stick to the plan we can see PS4 by year 2016... By that time I'll be 36 years old...

Do you think you will still be playing video games by that age?

I'm thinking it's probably more of a digital recorder media center device that will be able to play blu-ray, dvd, and all the PS games.

It's not a question of whether I will be playing video games then, but a question of how bad my children will be getting their asses kicked at whatever Soul Calibur iteration is out at the time.

You know who you're talking about right? They're going to need ten years to get their plan straight.

They'll give the first one backwards compatibility then promptly remove it for no good reason in a later edition of the hardware.

Some PS3/Xbox360 games will possibly not be emulatable like PS2/Xbox games are, because of the multi-core hardware they run on. Hidden threading bugs will creep up eventually, which are very hard to fix.
For the technically versed.

If they announce PS4 at the end of next year, it wont be out till 2011 or 2012 anyways.

Is it not probable Sony is thinking about their next console? The key term is thinking, just because they may be starting to get ideas out, doesn't mean its coming out next week.

They'd better pull their shit together, this time. I'm sick of all their corporate bullshitting and half-assedness. The focus on backwards compatibility is a definite step in the right direction.

This isn't much of a surprise. It doesn't show that Sony think the PS3 is a flop, it's just the next step. They began work on the PS3 immediately after the PS2 launched, and I don't think they considered the PS2 a flop, if you know what I mean *cough* over 120 million sold *cough*

Sounds to me more like they may be considering some other device. Handheld is the most likely in this consideration. Unless they plan on doing some sort of virtual console of their own. Personally, I hope these new programmers are able to put in an upscale effect on PSOne games.

But yes, it's pointless to stop development on whats next, regardless of how recently the previous has come. I certainly hope it is understood that Microsoft has likely been developing the Xbox 360's Successor since a year after launch or perhaps even from launch.. A "console" can mean so many different things these days.

I imagine if they start working on it early (as they obviously are) they will be able to make sure everything is working the way they want it, and the earlier they start the less they're going to have to use brand new technology later and maybe keep the costs down.
I'm not so much concerned about backwards compatibility, mainly because we will probably be able to emulate the newer systems with our PCs by then.
