R&D never stops people. You always think about new stuff even after you release a brand new console. Its just how technology works. Don't for a second think that Microsoft is not working on their next console or Nintendo either.
PS3 a flop ... you must be kidding ... they had a slow start ... but it's getting better every month and with the BR format ... it will boost the sales of the PS3
Damn I don't even want to think about the PS4 yet, it just makes me think about all that money I'll have to spend.

Wow, so I guess the 360 is a flop as well as about 1 or 2 weeks ago there was a front page article about MS and the stuff behind a new console. (I own a PS3, not a 360)

$600 for a ps4 with ps3 backwards compatibility, $400 for a ps4 without it.
Oh and it will be next-gen because it will come with huge hdd's for the downloadable HD movies! ;)

So I guess Ill buy a PS4 if I can play all PS1/2/3 titles there. That means if they stick to the plan we can see PS4 by year 2016... By that time I'll be 36 years old...

You know who you're talking about right? They're going to need ten years to get their plan straight.
They'll give the first one backwards compatibility then promptly remove it for no good reason in a later edition of the hardware.
Some PS3/Xbox360 games will possibly not be emulatable like PS2/Xbox games are, because of the multi-core hardware they run on. Hidden threading bugs will creep up eventually, which are very hard to fix.

They'd better pull their shit together, this time. I'm sick of all their corporate bullshitting and half-assedness. The focus on backwards compatibility is a definite step in the right direction.
This isn't much of a surprise. It doesn't show that Sony think the PS3 is a flop, it's just the next step. They began work on the PS3 immediately after the PS2 launched, and I don't think they considered the PS2 a flop, if you know what I mean *cough* over 120 million sold *cough*

Sounds to me more like they may be considering some other device. Handheld is the most likely in this consideration. Unless they plan on doing some sort of virtual console of their own. Personally, I hope these new programmers are able to put in an upscale effect on PSOne games.
But yes, it's pointless to stop development on whats next, regardless of how recently the previous has come. I certainly hope it is understood that Microsoft has likely been developing the Xbox 360's Successor since a year after launch or perhaps even from launch.. A "console" can mean so many different things these days.

I imagine if they start working on it early (as they obviously are) they will be able to make sure everything is working the way they want it, and the earlier they start the less they're going to have to use brand new technology later and maybe keep the costs down.
I'm not so much concerned about backwards compatibility, mainly because we will probably be able to emulate the newer systems with our PCs by then.

Man, I just wish they'd fix PS2 backwards compatibility. Hunting down a 60GB unit once I can afford it is gonna be a pain in the ass.
