First Persona 4 screens hit the web, I feel the urge to dungeon crawl photo

Ah, Persona 4: amazing new title, or complete rehash of the sublime Persona 3? It's hard to say for sure, but since the recent trailer surfaced on the nets fans have been atwitter about this upcoming Atlus release. Skeptical or not, I can tell you that the day P4 comes out I'm going to rush and buy it and then tear it open in the car like a 5 year old. It might be the equivalent of Persona 3.5, but even if so it's likely to be more unique than most JRPGs I'll come across this year.

The gallery contains the first direct-feed screenshots from the game, which definitely look a little bit more streamlined that Persona 3 did as far as graphical quality. Still no word on an actual release date yet, but as soon as more info squeaks through the cracks we'll bring it to the table.

I can't get the image of you sitting in your car as you tear a 5 year old open out of my head.

I would look at more than the first 2 screenies if Dtoids gallery viewer didn't suck so hard.

Is a "view next" button so much to ask?!?!?

I'm with you. No matter what I'll be buying this game, and probably be playing it non stop. I mean I played P3 like it was my job. But I've also been worried that this was going to another dungeon crawler/dating sim game. Even though the SL were about more than just dating. Hopefully they keep it fresh but even if it follows the same format as P3 I'm sure it will still be good.

@ Colette
Awesome! I dunno about anyone else, but unending frustration there.

On topic, P3 was easily one of my top 5 PS2 games - I'll buy P4 sight unseen.

I blogged about this Monday with the Famitsu scans. and got DESTROYED when I whined about the copy pasta the series seemed to have employed

not to discredit the first game, I enjoyed it. but still..

this is the second game as of late that has been referred to as .5 of the last one - Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is 1.5 ... now Persona 4 is somehow Persona 3.5 ...

i sort of share the sentiment... P4 does look and sound an awful lot like P3... but isn't that what a sequel is SUPPOSED to be? maybe we're referring to the latest sequels as .5 of the last ones because we've got sequelitis?

P3 was my favorite game of 2007. i'll be picking P4 up as soon as it arrives on our shores.

@ Cheeburga

It did, but, it took a while for it to reach the US. At one point, I had thought Atlus wasn't going to release it since no updates came out after a long period of time.

Seeing how the last game was a bit successful, I would assume P4 will come out faster.

You used to make me LOL so much Colette. What happened? Your writing is still amazingly brilliant, but you don't seem to go for the laughs enough anymore.

Maybe it's just me and I've just so happened to miss the funny stuff. Then again maybe your genius lay in the fact that you don't try to be funny, you just are....sometimes.

Happy Easter and thanks for the screens!

More dating please, and I really hope they give me enough time to beat FES.

I'm definitely going to admit that I will be disappointed if it's Persona 3.5, and there's a good chance it might be (seeing how the Japanese market fears change)

I haven't even played P3 yet, but I'm going to get FES the day it comes out. Hopefully the stretch between FES and Persona 4 in the States will be long enough for me to have a good time with FES.

Gosh, just on PS2 alone I have a ton of games on my backlog. Xenosaga, FF X, X-2, XII, GTA Trilogy, Yakuza, SotC, and now P3....

I'm not diggin' the yellow scheme here, and I can't say I care for the character designs, sans the Colette wannabe. At least the graphics got a bump.

Also, apparently cool kids fight evil with glasses these days. Here I was hoping Persona 4 would feature self-decapitation. Each sequel needs to up the ante, you know.

I'm sooo excited for this. Though I'm even more excited for FES because I'm restraining myself from playing more P3 because I'm just gonna have to start over when it hits. Ooooh, but the cravings are painful.

Maybe there is too much good stuff that Colette is commenting about, and just not enough rubbish to take the piss out of.

Yes, this does look hot, but nothing I haven't seen from the videos.

I really wish people would stop referring to this game as Persona 3.5. A lot of older Atlus games look a lot like each other; Nocturne and DDS have the same basis for their battle system, the same monster graphics for the most part, and tons of other similarities, but nobody called DDS "Nocturne 1.5". Let's at least wait until some substantial information about the game is released before we start passing the game off as a rehash of their last game. What the press says about a game heavily influences what the masses think of it, and if we start calling it "Persona 3.5" now, it'll never shake that moniker. And I don't think any of us want that to happen.

Ok, now that I've got that out of my system, this game looks fucking awesome. I want so bad it hurts.

@Cheeburga: Most likely not. None of the Persona games are connected to each other at all.

It looks kind of too similar to 3... i mean, they could have used the same engine and made the game different... don't get me wrong it still looks cool but i'm not sure i'm going to drop another 115hrs playing the same thing.

It looks like P3, walks like P3, sounds like P3, acts like P3. But if they insist it's not P3, then P3.5 it is.

I'm just saying...to use Phoenix's example:

It looks like Nocturne, sounds like Nocturne, acts like Nocturne. But they insist it's DDS, so it's Nocturne 1.5.

Atlus is pretty famous for making games that look thematically similar but aren't even close to being the same in any tangible way. I just don't want people to start passing up on P4 because "they've already played it when it was called P3". Like Shinu is suggesting in his post.

I don't think that's really fair Phoenix. Why does a sequel have to change everything when its on an aged system anyway? Sometimes, if something isn't broke and works, why fix it. I think some gamers will be glad to have something consistent for once.

There's little point in Atlus whipping up a whole new graphic engine for PS2, when they may be soon moving onto new systems. PS2 development is cheaper so its more cost effective for them and a lot of japanese gamers still have PS2 also.

Lastly, I hope if Persona 4 does well, Atlus will look to expand into some new series.

"@Cheeburga: Most likely not. None of the Persona games are connected to each other at all."

Except for Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, that is.

GoldenDonut: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are part 1 and 2 of the same game, like DDS1 and DDS2 or the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Persona 1 has no connection to the two persona 2 games. Neither of those has a connection to Persona 3. And Persona 4 is supposed to be a standalone game itself as well.

Im OK: I never played the first Persona because it was too backwards ass even for me, but I don't recall ever reading anything that playable characters from the first game showed up in the second. If so, well, then there you have it.

The characters being mentioned in P3 was just a fan reference, like how the Grim Fandango guy shows up in Monkey Island 3 and 4. Their names could have been replaced with any other generic name and they would have had an equal impact on the story.

When I said "at all" I meant in the sense that their storylines don't interconnect at all and nothing that happened in previous games is used as important plot devices in the newer games. Yeah, you get fun old game references like Maya showing up in a newscast, but it's not like you won't know who Ikutski is because you didn't play an older game in the series.

And yeah, Igor is like the Persona series mascot. He just shows up in each game, but he's never the same "Igor" and isn't really tied to the games in any successive order. Like you said, he's like FF's Chocobos or Cless Alvein showing up in pretty much every Tales game ever.

And yes, Igor's in P4. He's in the videos.

Two years after the Japanese release of P3 is a pretty quick time table, but, considering the US release of P3 was a year later, this is blazing fast for a sequel. It's a good time to be a Persona fan.

If this is a .5 entry, then would be it be a prequel or spiritual sequel. Seems like the in-game could be showing its age. Although when I watched some videos of 3's gameplay in motion, it looked crisp.

Another thing I enjoy about Persona, is the delivery. You never know how things may unfold. Only if you've made a good / bad decision, the interaction with friends or enemies change.

Then again it hasn't had too many female leads, so it may be a different viewpoint. A year later? hmm wonder.

I think I need to direct people to Burnout, Ratchet & Clank, and GTA as evidence. You can use the same engine or tweak it a bit and make multiple games that are good stand-alones and don't get stale.

I get a bit annoyed hearing the 'it looks the same' comments. Seems to happen more with RPGs than any other genre to, and I blame Squeenix for this. Not every good RPG series has to follow the 'Final Fantasy Formula' and be completely different every single time (for the most part).

The game is an indirect sequel, so it makes sense for the game to look similar. It's in the same timeline in Japan except two years later and in a different, rural area. Aside from that the story, characters, persona, and setting are different. They even tweaked the battle system and S.Link system even though they didn't have to. They did a lot to the game in two years, and I'm not about to complain.

THIS GAME LOOKS FUCKING EPIC!!!!!!!!! I can't wait seriously persona 3 is one of my favorite games on the ps2. Now I can look forward to FES later this month and I will be able to play Baroque while I'm waiting for it. Seriously I love Atlus, granted I sound like a huge fanboy, but thanks to them they are keeping the ps2 alive for me.
