First-person WiiWare fantasy fighter: Rage of the Gladiator photo

Ghostfire Games sent us some information on their upcoming WiiWare game Rage of the Gladiators. It's a first-person fighter set in a fantasy world, where you'll play as a gladiator in an arena. You'll beat down dragons, chimeras and the like with your battle hammer and shield, each presumably controlled by the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.

The press release tells us that each battle is a boss battle: “Rage of the Gladiator is a series of epic boss-battles,” says Ed Roman, CEO of Ghostfire Games. “There are no ‘fodder’ enemies – its all bosses, which we find to be the most fun part of games!”

It also has fourteen finishing moves, over 20 battles, and a leveling system that lets you add points to stats after completing each battle. The price has not been set yet, but we do know that it's coming to WiiWare this Fall.

See what you think with the images and video (below the jump) that we've included.

@ Magnalon: Isn't it a shame that it probably will be shovelware? This type of stuff looks like it could be great fun, especially with Wii Motion Plus and multiplayer.

But it'll probably be cheap crap.

@Eternal
If the PS3's wand motion technology had a bad ass gladiator game with high production values and online play, I can dig it.

Regarding the trailer, I had to lol at [S]Amit the Charmer, and the Eye of the Beholder's younger brother rip off.

We were planning on using Samit in a sequel to Rage of the Gladiator, but you have spoiled it for us.

@ Magnalon: I'm down with online gladiator battles. Even better, because it's a 1 on 1 game, the character models could look amazing on the PS3.

Also, that pic wins.

Did any body else noticed that the main character is "You"?
That makes this game a little bit better...

Can we convince you to put WiiMotionPlus support in, or will that have to wait for Rage of the Gladiator 2?

If Nintendo want to shake the negative connotations attached to it's console, they need to get standards.

This looks like a bad PS2 game.

No offense GhostfireScott.

Then again how much will it cost? I'd pay 5 or 6 bucks for a game that looks like this if it had some worthwhile gameplay.

Aurain raises a good point when he says this looks like a bad PS2 game, although I imagine that has more to do with WiiWare's 40MB limit (It is 40, right?} than with GhostFire's abilities or budget.

With the fact they're actually talking to people directly like this I doubt it will be shovelware. It doesn't look great but there's definately some effort behind the project. There's a different between shovelware and failed attempt but hopefully this game won't be either. Though I must admit it doesn't look impressive to say the least.

Ignoring the inevitable fanboy negativity against anything Wii-based, this looks like a pretty cool concept. Hopefully the gameplay lives up to the concept.

I'll definitely be watching for more info once the game arrives. :)

@Omikron: That's EXACTLY what I thought... and that's a good thing!

If it turns into some medieval Punch Out with huge monsters I'd love to give it a spin.

Tubatic -- On the question of Wii Motion controls, will have to wait for Rage #2. The control scheme on this game works incredibly well, is easy to pick up and very fun.

EternalDeathSlayer- we are actually very proud of our graphics, lush animations and everything we have been able to cram into that tiny 40mb download slot. For the WiiWare, this game is going to be amazing.

I do find it interesting that most people love the trailer, and think the game looks great, but there will always be people who don't like the idea, and thats cool too. To each his own!

Joking aside, Punchout hasn't really been redone yet in a good fashion, and this looks like a very interesting title the developers have obviously put their heart and soul into. I'm interested to see more :D

It's interesting to see similar things on Wii-ware coming out several months ahead of developer High Voltage's upcoming Wii retail titles. For example, the first FPS (and only?) on Wii-Ware was Onslaught was shortly followed by the Conduit. Now we're seeing a first person arena gladiator game shortly after High Voltage shows off their upcoming title Gladiator AD.

You know what this reminds me of, that Virtual Boy game "Teleroboxer"... utterly terrible name but for the virtual boy, one of their best.
On the subject, well its an interestin idea. Ultimately, thats what sells games on WiiWare, which is utterly crowded by mediocre puzzle games.
Even if the game turns out to be less than.. presentable, props for tryin something new.

We've been developing this way for almost a year, way before Gladiator A.D was announced. I think you guys are gonna love it.

That is something we may look into if we are so lucky as to have a good turnout for this game, so as to make a sequel.

I don't mind the graphics if the controls are solid.

Right now, I'm pretty spoiled with Wii Sport Resort's swordfighting so this better feel as responsive as that
