First Max Payne 3 screenshots reveal dirtiest t-shirt ever photo

Now we finally get to see what Max looks like after all these years. He's doing the filthy wifebeater thing now, I guess. Rockstar Vancouver has said that they've dropped a retired police officer into a violent, corrupt world in their latest, scheduled to hit the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this Winter. While we can't attest to how it feels yet, we can say that it looks pretty good judging by these new screenshots.

The July 2009 issue of Game Informer has the scoop on Max Payne 3's details, straight from Rob Nelson, MP3's Art Director, and Jeronimo Barrera, VP of development. Game Informer says that the game looks and feels "remarkably realistic, " and that "the attention to detail is remarkable." Remarkable, folks!

From the 2009 issue:

If you expected a by-the-numbers sequel, prepare to be surprised. The third chapter of the Max Payne saga takes our hero places that he's never gone before, while at the same time keeping an eye towards maintaining and improving the stylish gunplay that made his reputation.
In the screens below, check out the older, rougher looking Max. Anyone out there good with locations? Where does it look like Max is located?

To me the doesnt look like Max Payne, it looks like Farcry. Where is the trench coat and the film noir style. But its too early to judge anyways. I look forward to it.

Sao Paulo is one of the settings of the game and it appears to be the setting in the screenshots.

I've read the issue of GI this is from and they seem to go out of their way to reassure people that the game will feature heavy use of "bullet time".

This kind of turns me off.

Sure, MP may have sort of invented it or at least ushered it in, but nowadays seemingly every shooter uses bullet time or some variation or rip-off of it.

If the game isn't extremely polished and well thought out in every other facet of development, we could be looking at a big disappointment with this game, at least IMHO. Kind of how RE5 doesn't seem like it's going to stand the test of time quite like it's predecessor has.

Of course, it's Rockstar, so I expect a polished and well-made game throughout. I'll reserve judgment until I play it, of course, but I expect a good game from them.

Kind of looks like a New Franchise, but with Max Payne tacked on.

It doesn't look like Max Payne, or have the atmosphere.
Disappointing.

@ Super-weedgan: I was thinking more Generic Action Game: Max Payne Edition

But like I said before, it's Rockstar so I expect a good game.

Methinks Sao Paolo is going to be a great setting for MP. I was worried about the game losing the classic "Noir" setting by placing Max in the daylight, sans drafty NYC alleyways, but then i remembered "City of God," a pitch-perfect neo-noir crime drama, which showed well that style of storytelling translated to the slums of Brazil.

Concerning bullet-time, MP2 still has the best bullet-time system of the (wayyy too many) games that have one, so assuming they maintain they're upward trend i'm sure the result will be satisfying--also they're using the RAGE engine again with Euphoria animation, more fine-tuned and focused for a linear game, which should be pretty.

...Basically I'm excited for this game

Also, if this game features more day that night, I will be dissapointed.

Oh and the fact that it uses Euphoria is a big plus as well.

Although Sao Paulo (as mentioned on Game Informer) is a great setting for Max Payne (it can be as noir and dark as NY), these 'favelas' screenshots are more similar to Rio de Janeiro's. SP ghetto is a bit different.

I have a gagging sensation. Had high hopes for this game but after seeing these screens I honestly have no desire to play it. Thx Rckstr gg.

This was NOT the franchise to mess with. It's like those indie bands that create a great first couple albums and think suddenly that they have to "experiment" to stay afloat and the end result is pure and utter SHIT.

Sigh, MP3 is going to disappoint bigtime. It just has that feeling to me. Pretty much all the decisions I didn't want the devs to make, they have.
EternalDeathSlayer's Avatar
EternalDeathSlayer at 06/23/2009 16:32
@ Johnny Justice: According to the GI article, there is in fact a cover system. The developers say that there is a cover system but it is not the focus of the game, meaning you could play it a different way if you prefer.

Which is of course most likely bullshit.

He is in the São Paulo slums, where the REALLY poor peopl live, they barely have eletricity and water there. It's infested with drug dealers, robbers, killers an etc.

Sounds like a nice place to a Max Payne game, but there is no Noir and that makes me sad.

If you sat someone down with a copy of Max Payne 2, this thing and maybe uncharted, but didn't tell them the titles of the games, they'd think it was 2 separate series' but with mp 2 as the stand out one instead of uncharted.
I feel all sad inside now. my first glimpse of the game and I don't recognise any of it as Max.

There's actually TOO MUCH of "noir" in those screens, if you ask me.

Racial comments aside, being brazillian it's both nice and sad to see this change in the series. Brasil is a truly beautiful country, with wonderful, educated people. Even in the slums there are good working, honest to god individuals. It's just hard to be raised in a flawed system built by land owners and lobbysts. I just hope they don't turn Brazil, a country that, despite its flaws, is an example of social rights in America, into a stereotypical drug-infested rat hole.

Actually, São Paulo is quite a noir setting, and similar to NYC as well. Just take Paulista avenue as an exemple: a perfect noir/NYC/night/dark/desaturated setting. This stereotype is so boring and old by now, srsly u guys, Brazil has more to show than carnaval, samba, Pelé, slums, beaches and boobs.

I kind of wished they would have made Max more out of shape. His look seems to suggest his life has spun worse out of control, with being bald and having the scruffy beard and the shitty clothes, giving him a gut would make him look even worse, in a good shitty kind of way. Plus it would be funny seeing an out of shape bald guy trying to fly through the air shooting at bad guys. in slow mo.

I don't see how Max transformed into a smelly hobo lookin' guy. Last time I checked, Max saved the day and won the girl, so why is he in Sao Paulo looking like he wandered off the set of The Hills Have Eyes?
Also, for a genre that relies on heavy stereotypes to shine (like the protagonist has to be a detective/cop, not a dirty old man) the screens are so un-noir that they're pretty much anti-noir. Fuck it, let's just have some screens of Max playing with some kittens, we can benefit from these developments somehow.

@HiddenAHB: No, mate, I was not being sarcastic. It may hit you in the face that there ARE indeed good, intelligent people willing to learn from multiple creeds all over the world outside of your own self-indulgent reality. Brazil has an exemplary constitution and one of the most modern consumer rights codification.

I take for your "Or are you being sarcastic or you ate too much shit during your childhood" and its lack of "either" instead of the first "or" that you are my compatriot or just dumb. I really hope it's the latter. Yes, there are deep, deep problems in our society, but we at least have social care over here. It's not perfect, not even GOOD, but important steps were taken in a system so deep in shit that we had to take for 5 centuries that one could find it impossible otherwise.

You're just a pitiful, ignorant liberal that should take your time to actually READ something useful, instead of eating the shit you accuse me of ingesting. I'm a Law student and, specializing in comparative Law, I sure as hell know what the fuck I'm talking about, having read extensively works about and the very own Constitution of the United States, the Bundesverfassung, french, spaniss, portuguese, italian and japanese constitutions. That's excluding penal, civil and consumer codes. And it's not patriotism when I say that we DO have extensive, socializing legislation, instead of uttering claims of freedom not even knowing anymore what it means. Your freedom and your rights are that of screwing over the guy that's next to you, and I despise your axiologic tendencies as much as your derivative, mis-informed attempt to offend.

Go eat your shit, prick. For I actually feel bad for wasting my time writing all of this in order to NOT teach even a bit of respect to a moron.
