First Master System games for Wii Virtual Console announced photo

I'd like to believe that there's a Sega kid in all of us, though these days it seems that most are a bit down in the mouth when it comes to the Japanese game maker. That's okay, though. Those Sega faithful that have been around since the good old days will surely remember the Master System. It's nice to think back to those simpler days, isn't it? The return of these titles can help us get back to that.

We already knew that Master System titles were coming to the Virtual Console. Now Sega gives us some solid pricing. Each title will be available for 400 Wii Points ($4), making these MS games the cheapest retro titles on the Wii service.

WonderBoy is a perfect title to kick off the Master System releases with. I'm sure most of you are familiar with at least one of the various titles that fall under the WonderBoy series, but this is the very first, ported from the original arcade title. What some may not know is that Master Higgins from Adventure Island is a direct descendant of WonderBoy's Tom-Tom. In fact, aside from the character, Adventure Island and WonderBoy are the same game.

The other selection is Fantasy Zone. In it you fly a ship Opa-Opa around crazy, colorful levels, trying to take out enemy bases in each. Opa-Opa and references to Fantasy Zone have made numerous appearances in various Sega games, including Shenume, Arnold Palmer's Tournament Golf, and even Space Harrier. "Welcome to the 'Fantasy Zone'! Get Ready!"

Gaming Bits says that there is no release date so far.

I don't see the kids dishing out their Wii Points for either of these titles, but I think plenty of Sega kids won't mind ploping down $4 for old time's sake. Are you interested in either? What other Master System titles would you like to see?

[Thanks, JR]

400 points is a nice price. I forgot how vivid the Master System's color palette was! More of todays games could use a dose of color.

I still have Fantasy Zone for the NES, but it'd be nice to own a copy that works without excessive blowing. :D

I liked Fantasy Zone and all...but for me, I'd love to see Golvellius and Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap. Maybe Zillion too. :)

I'm with wishing Phantasy Star I was on there too... But Ph.Star 1, and Fant.Zone is pretty hard to find today, well, except on ebay.. But now I don't have to worry about paying too much shipping, I'm kinda tapped out from ebay with the $6 or 7 for a Fantasy Zone cart, plus having to add on another $5+ for shipping.. All in all a great deal for ol' sega fans!!

Y's the vanished Omens. I still have that game in the attic too, but it would be nice to play it. Also New Zealand Story... but i have to admit Fantasy Zone sounds tempting. Never played a wonderboy game yet though... i kinda like the look of Monster World or whatever it was called.

They won't put the NES version of Fantasy Zone on the VC because it was released under the Tengen label and unlicensed.

I'd play the Master System version though, and Phantasy Star 1 would be nice too.

Alex Kidd can go to hell and die. I had the Master System with that built in, and for a while it was that or Moonwalker.

Akex Kidd -- especially Alex Kidd in High-Tech World -- was fantastic. I'll look forward to its release. I also hope they release The Ninja: That game was hard.

God. The Maser System had so many great games...

Woah man you just made my day!

Fantasy Zone was a cartridge that a socalled 'friend' stole from me once, I never got it back, and I never found that game again in stores, after all these years, I still have the empty box with manual :-(

Now I'll finally be able to finish it!

VC 1-up's XBLA yet again with a bevy of good classics. Personally, I'd rather see 8-bit action over puzzle/board games any day. But thats just me.

Thankfully, they can't possibly take up much room on the Wii's tiny HD, so I might get some.
