I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Relic Entertainment in Vancouver for a special first-look preview of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. It's been far too long since we got down and dirty with a real action game set in the 40K universe, and this initial glance at the game tells me that the wait was worth it.

Check out our special video glimpse of Space Marine, where we give you the lowdown on this really promising action title. Relic wants to compete with the very best titles on the market, and so far I have little reason to doubt that the team can go toe-to-toe with the biggest AAA shooters out there.

We have more Space Marine coverage coming up, as I had a chance to chat with the team behind the game and get some cool stories for you. Keep reading Destructoid for more on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine as and when it happens!

Did they happen to mention a release date while you were up there? Our computers at GameStop had it streetdated for December of this year, but last week it looked like it was pushed back to December... of 2011.

Any word?

Fapfapfapfapfapfap. Even though I'm a little sick of playing as Space Marines in nearly every GW game (other than FireWarrior, which was underrated I thought), this still looks great to me.

The background music was a nice touch.

not a fan of the OTS (over the shoulder) viewpoint... but everything else looks good. Multiplayer will be the key. If it has that run and gun mentality combined with some fun (and brutal) melee then this might be a buy. I like my sci fi shooters! :)

Need more Dark Angels. Please Relic, even if you make other chapters DLC, make the first the Angels of Redemption. Cant wait for this, not a fan of DoW but I love Squad Command on PSP.

Hot damn I'm excited about this game.

It's great to see it in action too. I think they've got a bit more work to do (hopefully you really dont end up just standing still and shooting things all the time) but I have faith in Relic still.

Space marines have gotten such a bad reputation as of late... weird to actually see the phrase used in a game let alone the actual title. Still if it's a good game I'm still up for it.

Violence violence violence violence mushroom mushroom. Looks cool, although the shooting seems a little dull (I feel myself wishing Relic hadn't taken "a model may not move this turn if it fires a heavy weapon" so literally...). The melee could well make up for it, though. I'll have a peek if it comes out on PC, which it should.

I really hope this ends up being good. I'm still newish to the universe, but I was starting to get into it for a while there. If this is a rock solid game, that could be the final push. Hell, I can see myself eventually even playing the tabletop, which is the -first- time I've ever said that.

WH40K has the original space marines... well.. at least when it comes to anything -close- to gaming.

I dunno, sometimes, when the marine was holding still and just shooting things, it seemed a little too effortless, like he was in a light gun shooter or something. Yes, marines do generally hold still and blaze away at their targets when they're shooting, but there was something about this gameplay that didn't seem very dynamic. Maybe the guy was just playing on easy mode, I dunno.

@rcwarrior

There's a vid on the xbox dash (probably on YouTube aswell) of an interview with a dev on the game and they said they didn't want the marines to be weak. Staying true to the lore of 40k these guys don't run or hide, that's why they are standing still surrounded by people whilst they slay. Its also why there isn't a patch of cover you can stick to for health regen/blind firing purposes.

I don't play the Tabletop game either, but I loved Dawn of War/II and hope Space Marine really captures the feel of the 40k universe. This video preview looks really promising -- Space Marines wouldn't hide behind cover, after all.

Now, I'll admit, one reason I'm hoping it takes off is the possibility of a later sequel, with four person co-op and maybe some other unit representation...but Space marine looks good, hope the game is fun and does good box office, so to speak.

I have sunk hundreds of dollars into the tabletop, it's fucking amazing, like the board game version of an RTS.

also i'm really cumming to this video as someone who knows the lore of Warhammer super religiously, let me tell you this is looking great.

now... if they get the story right and you fight tyranids, this will be my game of the century.

As a pretty big fan of the WH40K Universe (if not the sinking £hundreds into the tabletop game; been there, done that) it looks like something I'd actually take an interest.
My only concern is the actual firefight sequeces in the video seemed pretty dull. Yeah, Space Marines are Tough-as-Nails, Acid-Spitting [bet THAT won't be in the game :'( ], Kick-Ass machines, but if you can just stand there and soak up bullets then what's the point? There's bad-ass PCs, and then theres Incredibly easy, tedious shooters.

That and he's an Ultramarine. Ultramarines are dicks. FOR SANGUINIUS!

@Lichtonatus: I'm sure there will be much more to the game than what was shown there. That was a just a few minutes of what will no doubt be many hours of happy dance time xenophobic fun. Also, Sanguinius had angel wings and listened to Linkin Park in his spare time, Leman Russ would've kicked his ass:)

And for the sake of joy and my excitement:
