First look: Resident Evil: Degeneration photo

Resident Evil: Degeneration is an all CG film set for a straight-to-DVD release in Japan sometime in 2008. Details of the film's contents remain unknown beyond the scant bits of information derivable from these screens. For starters, the film is apparently set seven years after the destruction of Raccoon City in 1998. And it appears to feature two of the series' most popular characters, Claire Redfield and Leon S Kennedy.

But wait -- during 2004, the time Resident Evil 4 took place, wasn't Leon a special agent for the President? If so, why is it that in this movie he's dressed in his old Raccoon Police Department jumpsuit? Did Leon have another tryst with zombie genocide in or around Raccoon City one year after being hired, trained, and sent overseas to wage bloody destruction upon scores of brainwashed Spaniards?

Potential continuity errors aside, I'm hoping this film is a good one. I know it can't be worse than Resident Evil's previously released forgettable foray into CG movie land.

Goddamnit, what's the thing with posting pictures of an upcoming trailer and THEN release the trailer?

I'm deeply ambivalent. As an RE fan I'll make a point of seeing it anyway; I like many of the story elements and characters in the series overall but this could either be really well done or a total steaming pile.

I’m doubtful at all because Capcom has a poor history of inconsistent storytelling and in a feature which would have no gameplay mechanics to fall back on, the prognosis is bad. Consider: rather than reboot the series to fix inconsistencies and allow for more development, Capcom seems to make their projects with out any serious consideration to continuity or to where the story might be heading, then they add insult to injury by trying to spakle awkward gaps in the timeline with games either designed to explain the interim or distance themselves progressively further down the timeline, all the while turning the franchise into more of a shooter that happens to have some freaky monsters.

As for their character selection, Leon is an alright guy although they made him into a little too much of a willfully ignorant cowboy in 4("Illuminados" is not a mouthful, "Ahmadinejad" on the other hand...). And Chris. I hate Chris. He's a f**king boy scout who has never done/said anything interesting in the series aside from being a device to protect Rebecca and introduce Claire. What the writers at Capcom should do is bring back Barry, although he mostly played stooge to Wesker in game 1, he was still well developed. His dialoge was somewhat dorky, but entertaining; also, although he was easily manipulated at times, he has a good heart and is fiercely dedicated both to his team and family, speaking of; what was the fate of his wife and kids and possibly his relationship to them? Barry also knows his guns back to front which would allow for a broader spectrum of arms in a game or feature or at least the potential is there for some interesting modifications on what he already has.

Of course, I would consider it Ideal to have an entire feature based on the women of RE. Jill, Ada, Rebeca and Claire are all smart, tough, resourceful and HOT. What else do you need?

Listen here people. In RE 4 Wesker is planning on re-establishing Umbrella by securing finances from other corporations. That was the whole point of ADA on the game. If any of you have played RE: CVX, then you'd know that Wesker is a superpowered bitch due to T-Virus infection. Kinda' like Alice in the movies. In the RE 4 game, Leons states that six years have passed since Racoon City. Assuming that it didn't take Leon more than a whole year to rescue Ashley and return homw, isn't it possible that Wesker was actualy able to restore Umbrella to some extent? Especially since he actualy was able to get the Plagas sample from Saddler thanks to ADA.

In case some of you can't figure out what I'm saying.

Look at it this way. In 1998 Racoon City is plaqued by the T-Virus outbreak. We all know that one. Six years later the whole Resident Evil 4 situation happens. We all know how that turned out. Hears my assumptions on Resident Evil: Degeneration. Leon returns home and sits around happily doing what the Hell ever he feels like doing. After a year that fuck Wesker manages to pull some shit and the T-Virus is re-introduced unto an unsuspecting innocent populace. Claire, for some reason, happens to be around and hooks up with Leon. They then procede to do whatever it is that they do in the movie. There's your continuity. If I'm missing something let me know.
