First look at Warhammer 40,000 MMO get! photo

Vigil is currently hard at work on Darksiders, but the team has another futuristic game starring musclebound freaks in the works, a game it's been working on for years and years. That game is an MMO set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. This explains why Darksiders' main character looks exactly like a space marine, at any rate.

Anyway, details on this MMO have been under strict lock and key, so today is the first glimpse anybody's ever had of the thing. Kotaku has the goods, with concept art for the game revealing a pretty faithful recreation of the popular Games Workshop universe.

Anyway, go check those out if you're interested.

NO! I said I would never play another MMO after WoW took three years of my life but who am I kidding, no way I can resist a Warhammer game. FFUUUUUUU

They should have never made a shitty Warhammer Fantasy MMO, and ALWAYS stuck with a well made (and supported) 40K Space Marine title, to contrast WoW's fantasy setting.

At least it may have a chance of succeeding before Blizzard releases the inevitable Starcraft MMO

They better damn well make the actually cool races playable like Dark Eldar, Tyranids and Sisters Of Battle (I don't care what anyone says, space nuns in power armour with flame throwers is awesome). Pretty tired of having to be Space Marines in every 40k computer game.

NO! I have resisted playing any MMOs this far... but... but... it could be so good!

However, I will admit that I worry after what I've heard about the plain vanilla Warhammer MMO. This game I see as having so much potential, but so many potential pitfalls. My fingers are going to be sore from being permanently crossed now, too.

Colour me intrigued, but I severely doubt it'll be able to put much of a dent in WoW's sub numbers, especially with Cataclysm coming out.

Now ToR, on the other hand...

@ ace fibble

it would work better as dark heresy rpg or inquisitor table top than 40k mmorpg... i cant see striking scorpions grouping with techmarines

@Locke Indeed. I suspect it'll be mainly Space Marine affair. It'd be difficult to pull off all the other races in an MMO setting well. Is it confirmed as an RPG, though?

I'm not sure why people suddenly think 40K MMO means following the standard MMORPG mechanics. If Vigil and GW really were smart then they would be making this an MMFPS similar in size and scope to Planetside.

This is a smart move. I don't understand why so many companies keep making fantasy MMOs. At least with a SciFi setting, you can hit a different niche.

@Ace
There is a reason Space Marines are in every game, and mostly the focus.

The Space Marine model line outsells every single other model line they have combined.

It's rather absurd the following Space Marines have.

Agreed. WAAAGH!

At least some info is finally coming out so I can decide whether or not I will regret my inevitable purchase.

It's been years since I've heard about this, wasn't another company working on it back then, like THQ or something...

Anyways, here's to hoping this turns out to be the spiritual successor to Planetside and not WoW-esque. Online-land needs more divesity.

It's been discussed on forums for years, but there is no way to do a 40k MMO without ignoring 99% of the existing canon. Unless they let you select a space marine where you spend 16 hours a day training, 2 hours praying, 4 hours sleeping and eating, and 2 hours fixing your armor, day after day, year after year, I call bullocks.

You could sort of work as Deathwatch marines. But the problem is how to stop everyone playing as Deathwatch marines, and encourage the Rogue Traders/Inquisitors/Techpriests etc etc etc that the setting really demands should outnumber the marines by ten to one.

Mmm. So, if I play Chaos Space Marine, can I level up to become a Chosen? And then a Lesser Daemon? MMMMMMMM.
