I am not a multiplayer gamer. I love my single-player experiences and one of the things I hate most in this world is when a single-player game tacks on multiplayer in the sequel just so they can say they have it. Even if it doesn't hurt the single-player experience at all I am irrationally annoyed by it. Is this the case with Dead Space 2's multiplayer? We've got our first video to help us decide.
I have to say, as long as the single-player doesn't suffer from the dev team working on the multiplayer (and there shouldn't be any reason it should) this looks very promising. Necessary to the game and franchise? Not in the least. But fun? Yea, I'll definitely give it that.
Tacked on or not, let's hope that it turns out to be as good a time as jumping on somebody with a Necromorph child and tearing them apart looks like it can be.

Meet the rest of the team
I'm with you,I hardly play multiplayer. To me its all about the singleplayer and the story. Once I'm don't I'm ready uo move on to the next and if there isn't something new to play I always have something to replay from the past. Except for fighting games of course.
it seems alot like a slower left 4 dead type of gametype but it looks real fun. I was expecting somethingl like this. At least its not miner vs miner with the plasma cutters. Looks cool.
As long as they closely focus on terror and teamwork, this will be a blast. However, that video failed to tickle my excitement. I'm still pumped for Dead Space 2, but not for the multiplayer aspect.
This looks incredibly unbalanced. If you have 4 smart guys on the Issac team, they'll win every time. What they need is something like Double Agent or Riddick where it's "All-Against-One." I wouldn't mind taking on 5-8 necromorphs by myself.
@bakewell: developers usually put in sweat and tears into their project but sometimes then can seem tacked on - a bullet point. And if resources that could've been applied to the single player are spread too thin, the campaign mode suffers for that bullet point. I think that's what he's hoping is not the case.
That said this looks interesting. As long as I get a meaty campaign that wasn't diminished in anyway I'll be happy. This sort of MP works for Deadspace but I wonder how long it can keep gamers attention - although early 2011 might be the perfect window for this.
I'm fucking sold, consider me a guaranteed purchase.
"Meh. I'd rather have a co-op horde mode."
And what makes you think there WON'T be one? This is an INITIAL reveal, chances are there's the option for a game mode just like this with no objectives and only human players. I'd have a little more faith in them having multiple game modes.
I just watched the actual trailer, and if they only add co-op to the single player campaign then it won't be too bad (as opposed to devoting half of the games resources to some capture the flag bullshit). However I now am worried that every single enemy in the game is going to grapple your face just so your partners can save you.
C0-OP campaign would ruin the game more than tacked on capture the flag. Dead Space is supposed to be a single player story experience, so I have absolutely no idea where your logic comes from.
@ninfan1990
Because a co-op campaign wouldn't take away development time and resources away from the single player campaign while making a dozen battle modes would ensure that the single player campaign would be an afterthought (like every other first person shooter out there).
Also It's not like Dead Space was THAT scary of a game. A second play through with a friend and increased number of necromorphs would be nice.
Multiplayer doesn't look too bad. The graphics don't look as good as the singleplayer, which is fairly common. It kind of reminds me of Left 4 Dead 2's multiplayer versus.
I'm just wondering when we'll get to the point where this sort of multiplayer just doesn't do it anymore. It just looks redundant to me. I'll save my final judgement until I actually play it, something I plan on doing, but right now it doesn't look like this offers anything different than Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, or Alien Swarm. Am I missing something?
Hmm, seems like a pretty good idea, but then again it's giving me mixed feelings after watching the trailer. I guess it could go either way in my opinion.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I imagine the devs put a lot of work into the multi player aspect and would quite resent that turn of phrase.
I wonder if this phrase was used as flippantly and incorrectly when multiplayer was beginning to take a hold of gaming.
My inane and useless ponderings asides, this looks like a worthy addition to dead space 2. Day one purchase.
story line co-op is one thing. but competitive multiplayer in a game that has no reason for it is just a waist of time and money..

But then again I have yet to get my hands on it so we'll see then.
This looks fun but like KingSigy said, kind of unbalanced.

I already predict a short single player campaign that is only mediocre compared to the first. I'm getting tired of multiplayer games.
I'm fine with it as long as you don't have to drag a bunch of AI companions through the single player campaign.

Looks good. Was planning on getting the game anyway so it's a nice bonus.
