First Jimpressions: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed photo

As we announced earlier today, a demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has arrived to Xbox Live in downloadable demo form, and we were eager to snap it up and get our hands around this delightfully destructive game.

After spending a morning at the pleasure of Mr. Starkiller, how do we feel about LucasArts' highly anticipated game? Is it a Force Unleashed or more of a Force Choke? Hit the jump as I share my first Jimpressions on this upcoming action extravaganza.

The demo starts with Starkiller seemingly having a flashback to the time Darth Vader murdered his father. Normal people would hold a grudge, but Starkiller instead joined the dark side and now serves as Vader's secret apprentice. You are charged with your first task, hunting down a Jedi and bringing his Light Saber back to the Dark Lord. Graphically, the cutscenes are not the most amazing I've seen on the 360, but the animation is decent, and the voice acting is pretty solid -- an easy thing to say with Matt Sloan providing his amazing Vader forgery.

As the game begins proper, you soon realize just how much power is at your disposal. With very simple button presses, you're able to throw lightning, blast objects out of your way, and move things around with the power of the Force. The game utilizes an automatic targeting system that doesn't always work the way you want it to, but the game is so versatile in its death-dealing that if you accidentally pick up the wrong object, you won't mind too much since you can just use that to murder with instead of carrying out your original intentions.

Starkiller himself handles a little too loosely for my liking, but it's only a small niggle. Generally, the demo handles adequately, and the controls are intuitive enough for you to look like a merciless badass within seconds.

The main draw of course is the ability to walk into a room and just annihilate everything, living or dead. It is here that Force Unleashed really shows its stripes and provides some solid entertainment. The expected sadistic thrill one gets from holding an enemy mid-air while he begs for his life is present and correct, and it never gets old watching an enemy spin through the sky as he's flung miles into the distance. The Euphoria engine struts its stuff, as enemies grab hold of heavy objects in a desperate attempt to stay grounded before you throw them into oblivion. As one would expect, the physics are not quite as brilliant and inspiring as the hype would have you believe, but it's a terrific engine that helps make the game that bit more fun.

Even though Force powers are the order of the day, Light Saber combat is pretty robust in its own right, especially since you can imbue your Saber with the Force in order to make it even more deadly. Using simple combos, you'll be able to charge your weapon with lightning for some visually impressive strikes, or work a Force Push into the flow of combat. Of particularly brutal satisfaction is the impale attack, where you can lift a foe into the air and then toss your Saber into his chest. Tasty.

The game ends with a fight against an AT-ST, which threw me at first until I worked out what to do. In news that may irritate some, Quick Time Events play a role in the combat here, and you'll be using a QTE to dispatch the Chicken Walker. Personally, I don't really mind QTEs so I found it inoffensive, but I can imagine some people won't be so keen.

Ultimately, it's a quick and fun little demo that does well to highlight the versatile and fun combat system. My one worry at this point is that the fighting will get a little old after a while and eventually one will grow tired of flinging enemies around. However, you get to level up at least once during the demo, during which time your Force Push is upgraded, so hopefully the inclusion of upgraded abilities and hopefully a lot more unlockable attacks should help keep things interesting.

Going by the strength of the demo, things look good for Force Unleashed. I'm not expecting it to be a mindblowing Game of the Year, but I am definitely anticipating a lot of violent fun and a loyal experience for fans of the Star Wars universe.

I enjoyed the demo. Still looking forward to the game.

Did anyone notice the ultra cheesy text at the end of video that plays upon completing the demo?

"May the force blow your mind"

I groaned. Loudly.

Sorry Jim, Vader is voiced by Matt Sloan, AKA Chad Vader.

Having played the demo I'm not 100% on picking the game up now. From the trailer's I've had pumped into the workplace over and over I was expecting a lot more. I guess it'll be a decision made by peer pressure.

official xbox magazine just did a review of the whole package and gave it a 75 - which is strange as they tend to give good grades to over hyped games.

i'm so tired of spending months looking forward to games that end up being ho hum. being relatively new to gaming, it seems strange that "great" games are so incredibly rare.

I'm excited to try this out tonight. I'm not a big fan of QTEs, but I've certainly enjoyed a fair share of games that put them to use -- Tomb Raider: Legend, Shenmue, Indigo Prophecy/Farenheit.

10/10. No, I'm not kidding. This is perfect. If they can extend this level of awesome throughout the full game and expand on it, this will be the best Star Wars game ever. (P.S. Fuck KOTOR. Seriously.)

you're always such a negative nancy, even when you're complimenting something you can't help but to add some pessimism...

"Graphically, the cutscenes are not the most amazing I've seen on the 360, but the animation is decent..."

"...automatic targeting system that doesn't always work the way you want it to..."

"Starkiller himself handles a little too loosely.."

"Generally, the demo handles adequately.."

"..the fighting will get a little old after a while and eventually one will grow tired of flinging enemies around.."

"I'm not expecting it to be a mindblowing Game of the Year..."

I loved the demo. Played through it twice. I love being able to fight on the dark side of the force instead of always having to be the good guy pussy.

It seems to really put you in the sw universe and the gameplay is plain out fun. The force powers are as good as I had hoped and I can only imagine how much better they get once leveled up a bit more.

way to go lucas arts!

omfg, did they actually call him Starkiller or is that just a joke by Jim? Cause that was the name for Luke in the original scripts (The movie was originally called The Adventures of Luke Starkiller) until they changed it. Either way, LOL!

Also, I also felt Jim was being a bit negative about it. Did you not have an amazing time, sir? Was it not loads of fun? :) And I think Force users should handle loosely. They're supposed to be limber and flapping around.

Bottom line, this game is going to be fun. Don't expect it to be the best video game ever made, just the best Star Wars game ever made. The goal is fun with the Force. Fission maccomplishment, in my opinion.

Tried to download it for the 360, gold membership only apparently (okok, I don't have one but the vast majority do). Free over the PSN though.

Wait.. Sony giving shit away.. Did I just see that right? Or am I in for a lovely suprise when this finishes downloading?

I've played this about 5 or 6 times now. I cannot stop having fun with this...and it's just the demo.

The hardest difficulty for the demo, is actually pretty tough in a "bringing a knife to a gunfight" way. You still feel pretty badass but all those guys shooting at you tend to kill you quick if you don't pay attention.

Just finished going through the demo on normal and hard. My main complaint is that they just randomly throw a bunch of explosive crates everywhere, thus every encounter turns into throwing some crates at storm troopers which then explode. Or you can ocasionally throw a tie fighter at them, which will also instantly explode. It would be a lot nicer if there was a bridge/other non-exploding object that you could break off with the force and then crush people with or something.

Probably not worth a day 1 purchase, but definitely will be worth it at $40 or less.

Mehh.....

It wasn't that good. The physics are nice and lightsabers are cool but apart from that i'd rate it as a run of the mill beat em up with a good AI engine.

Here's hoping they announce the Multiplayer component theyre planning for the Xbox360 and Ps3

DING!

Exactly what I thought. Problem I see with this is that George Lucas' imagination and David Jaffe's imagination are stark contrasts. The God of War series would get stale if they didn't constantly challenge you, constantly upgrade your arsenal, and constantly urge you to continue with story. I'll wait for the reviews to see if LucasArts can pull off the same.

I thought the demo rocked. Played through it twice, and I hate Star Wars. The second time through I figured out that flinging enemies actually isn't very fun at all, and gets nothing done. The key is to throw shit at them.

Wasn't too keen on the demo at first, but after playing it through a few more times, I'm really enjoying it. My only major gripe is with the lack of dismemberment. Usually I'm not bothered with gore in games, but c'mon, it's a lightsaber! Having to hit enemies 2 or 3 times to kill them makes it feel relly underpowered (to what it should). That sucker should be slicing through everyone!

I played through it three times now. Love it, but hate the auto-aiming. The first couple of times I loved every second of it. You know, playing it on normal makes you feel like such a bad ass Sith, and playing it on hard actually gives you a bit of a challenge, seeing how quickly your life meter goes down if you don't block or dodge incoming fire. But for some reason, the third time pissed me off. It wasn't that the game suddenly stopped being fun, it's that for some inane reason, the auto-aim just wasn't registering well. Like when I fought the AT-ST, I was CLEARLY aiming right at him, and there was no other enemies onscreen, but it just idiotically tossed he barrels in the wrong direction. It felt like a Wii game in that respect. Some times it'd toss to the immediate right, others it went straight up, others it just flew behind me. BEHIND ME. Really? When I'm clearly aiming at the AT-ST directly in front of me? But aside from the dodgy barrel throwing controls, I loved it. I loved dropping TIE fighters on storm troopers, tossing rebels at one another, dropping pieces of environments ontop of unsuspecting victims, needlessly throwing droids through windows. I'm going to love this game endlessly. As Sharpless said, it's probably the best Star Wars video game ever, and I LOVED the KOTOR series.
I just wish the aiming was more precise.

Essentially it's Star Wars meets God of War. Apparently the storyline in this game is enough to sell it. That's what they rep at X'08 said more or less. Still don't like the idea that your light-saber apparently can't cut through a storm trooper. the Force moves are pretty cool though.

@Spooky Electric

I had the same problem with the throwing. The whole left stick/right stick threw me a bit, but with some practice I could throw pretty accurately.

I think the key is that the left stick goes away from you/towards you with up and down movement. Once you get used to that, it's just flick and release.

Also, the right bumper (i think) will lock the targeting which helps a little with being able to grab what you want, but I agree it does tend to jump around too much.

There's GOT to be a better way to make this telekinesis ability work. Trying to pick shit up and aim it carefully with the left&right analogs while being fired at relentlessly by an AT-ST is just way too infuriating. Also, targeting feels really fucked up. Whenever I'm trying to pick up a specific object, it's like a shot in the dark. Or maybe I just suck.

Overall though, this is the most decent thing to come out of the Star Wars Universe in a long while, so props to that. As much as it might ruin my nerd cred, I'd have to say this game could potentially work better on... *gasp* ...Wii.
