1Up has the exclusive on all the new information for Street Fighter IV. They've revealed that Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Dhalsim will be some of the returning combatants. 1Up also confirmed that the game is going to be a 2D fighter, but the characters are 3D based. Hey, looks like that Surfer gal was mostly right. Capcom hasn't revealed what platform the game will be on, but 1Up is guessing PS3, X360 and Arcade and not to mention that Surfer Girl also said the same thing (excluding the Arcade bit). The upcoming issue of EGM will have 13 pages of info including hands-on coverage of the game. Check out the gallery for a better picture of Ryu about to kick some ass.

So anyone else thinks this looks really ugly so far? Also, whoever did the cover art for the Street Fighter IV issue of EGM needs to be fired. His head is so tiny! [Update: Just so we're all on the same page, the cover art was provided by Capcom. -- CTZ]

[Editor's note: Dtoider Macca just happily pointed out that either Ryu has a cucumber in his pants or that he's just really happy to see everyone. Also cocks indeed.]

[Update 2: Capcom sent over a Press Release. Check it after the jump.]

[Thanks, Kadosho!]

CAPCOM® KICKS OFF THE NEXT GENERATION OF FIGHTING GAMES WITH STREET FIGHTERTM IV

The Next Round of the Definitive Fighting Game Experience Combines 3D Graphics with Classic Street Fighter Feel

Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today officially announced development of Street Fighter™ IV, the next iteration of the genre-establishing fighting game series. This marks the first new entry announced in nearly eight years, following the acclaimed Street Fighter III Third Strike.

In its amazing twenty year history, Street Fighter has revolutionized the fighting genre and created a global legacy like no other. Few details have been released on the new game, outside of a heart-pounding preview trailer that set the gaming community on fire when it was released in October on the official website, StreetFighterWorld.com.

Capcom is proud to announce the return of four classic "World Warriors" in Street Fighter IV: returning favorites Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Dhalsim. The characters and environments are rendered in stylized 3D computer graphics (CG), while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes. The traditional six-button controls for the game will return, with a host of new special moves and features integrated into the input system. Mixing tried-and-true classic moves and techniques with all-new, never-before-seen gameplay systems, Street Fighter 4 brings a brand new fighting game to fans the world over.

Everything that made the legendary Street Fighter II a hit in arcades, living rooms and dormitories all over the world has been brought to bear here, with even more surprises. With the inclusion of Capcom's latest advancements in new generation technology, Street Fighter IV promises to deliver an extraordinary experience that will re-introduce the world to the time-honored art of virtual martial arts.

Features:
• 2D/3D fighting environments
• Classic Street Fighter characters re-imagined for a new generation of gamers
• New special moves that go beyond any Street Fighter fan's wildest imagination
• Amazing locations never seen before in a Street Fighter game
• New gameplay elements provide new challenges for both newcomers and the most seasoned Street Fighter pro.

EGM has him with a small head while the screenshot on 1Up has him with some huge hands and feet. Hopefully this looks much better in motion.

What tha hell are some of you talking about? This looks awesome!

This is what Street Fighter was always meant to look like!

To hell with the "Shonen Jump Fighter EX" look, Ryu has and always did look like a beefy chiseled character. Have you seen any of the bloody artbooks?

You want uber-anime wide-eyed typicalism, go play Guilty Gear or Melty Blood and leave our Street Fighters alone.

Though I am a little disappointed the freaky ink effect doesn't seem to be used(at least yet).

King Of Fighters Maximum Impact has some competition. I was hoping for 2d, but I'm still looking forward to it, can't possibly be as bad as the EX games.

Cover for EGM = epic fail.

As for the screenshot, I thought it looked pretty good. Well, the background looks pretty good. The character model needs to be more like that kickass trailer they showed. I do want to see it in motion and just forget the bullshots.

If they were to rebuild the graphics from the ground up, I am sure that more people would be interested and they should use the same enviorment and movable fighting like in DOA4.

I'm going to save judgment until I see this in motion, but just because the models are in 3-D does not mean this game will be the same as that abomination EX was.

There's another franchise that's pulled this off very well, and in fact, it's been praised for pulling off 2-D fighting with 3-D models.

Super Smash Bros., anyone?

I think the screenshot looks pretty tight. It isn't cel-shaded but it does has that certain cartoon/hand drawn look to it. At least they aren't making it look like Tekken and doing the whole thing of trying to make it look photorealistic. I guess we just gotta wait and see what happens with the gameplay, though

Someone above makes a good point, the teaser trailer featured a completely unexpected but entirely welcome art style, it was minimalist without looking sparse, the colour palette was used sparingly and thoughtfully which gave greater impact to the visulas and of course the movement, the visulas looked fresh and new without looking shiny and crass.

Then we cut to this screenshot and its back to the 'let's throw everything we possibly can into the visuals, fuck style or direction, let's just show what this baby can do' attitude which plagues so many games right now.

To all new game artists just starting out, there's a huge gap in the market right now, Capcom have followed the herd, if you are clever you can make your name right now with some interesting character designs and original art direction.

It's a sad turn of events when SF4 looks like those awful western illustrations for SF1, remember those? Well this screenshot is identical, SF has come full circle, 2008 Ryu now looks like 80's airbrush Ryu.

Hm...I’m not sure how I feel about this. So is it going to play like the 3D DOA and Tekken games, etc., where the field of vision is 2D but you can move around in a 3D space (you know what I mean?) Or are you literally only going to be able to move up, down, left, and right? As to the art style...well, I don’t think it looks all that bad, but like a few other people mentioned, I’m going to reserve judgment until I see it in motion.

Oh, and I just saw the EGM cover...what art team vetted that sketch to put it on the cover, and have its members been fired yet?

No, fail. Generic looking 3D graphics? Capcom you dissapoint me.

Why not just do a 2d, HD sprite version with an insane commitment to the project -- something that makes SF2HD look like a proof of concept demo.

3D sucks. Even if it still has 2d gameplay D: ... I've always thought fighter games are married to sprites. You can skip some frames of the animation to make it quicker without making a whole mess, polygons are different.

Shin, how does it look Generic? If Generic you mean every other fighting game that has attempted to emulate the magic SF has had over the past 20 years then yeah. So funny how what is considered generic now is being applied to the game that set the started to begin with. that's like saying Mario is your Standard looking platformer.

This is capcom's baby. they'll make sure it plays as it should. awesome..

I don't know what you guys are talking about... this looks nice as hell to me. I appreciate that Capcom stuck with sprites until they could do 3D models that looked good, and I really appreciate the fact that they kept the gameplay based in 2D.

I'm not going to say anything on this game until I see some in-game footage. Sometimes fugly pictures are taken of certain people. This could be Ryu's bad side.

But honestly...where the fuck is SFII HD Remix? Where, Capcom? I've been waiting for nearly a year. Can they release at least a fucking trailer, or more screenshots?

When 3D graphics start to resemble the original organic concept art, then they will have made the all important leap from being technically impressive into being artistically impressive.

People give game graphics an easy time simply because they are game graphics, they are judged on a technical level and not an artistic one, if you were to judge most game visuals in the context of other creative mediums, then you will conclude that most game graphics lack the elegance and sophisticated art direction which other mediums have in abundance.

The point here is that with all this new processing power at their disposal, developers still want to make all game graphics look the same. That SF4 screenshot is fine if you want something which merrily walks down the same old path, but these latest visuals remain disappointing for those who crave something totally unique. The teaser trailer hinted at something far greater than what we see above.

Compared to what could have been, compared to the amazing artwork which is doing the rounds outside of the games industry, and compared to what is now possible with consoles, SF4 looks totally lame.

I dont see how the graphics are lame. They look good to me and saying ryu looks generic is kind of dumb. He has only been the bases for fighting game characters for the last 15 years.

Seems like you guys are being a little pesimistic. You can take an ugly screenshot of SFIII plus the game doesnt come out for like a year.

I need to see Chun-Li and Ken... and then I can make a proper assessment.

I like the NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. approach, I think that is KEY to bringing old school titles back from the dead, but it looks a little too rough. I really would have rather they based the art on the OTHER Street Fighter artist, the one UDON copies.

Shit, is UDON a company AND a particular artist?

It really doesn't matter how it looks, just as long as they dont try to pull some 2 and a half D bullshit in an attempt to compete with Tekken (yuck). My major concern is that all the 2.5d fighters I've played have felt loose like Ron's mom, not enough solid contact. I really hope they dont throw out the progress they made in Street Fighter III game play wise for more of a "classic" feel. The world needs a new techincal fighter since they ruined Guilty Gear 2.

Odin Sphere is the most refreshing, beautiful looking game to come out in a looooooong time. This is a disappointment, as I was hoping they would stick with the Marvel vs Capcom 2 style of character sprites. This "tough" style just looks cheesy.
