1Up has the exclusive on all the new information for Street Fighter IV. They've revealed that Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Dhalsim will be some of the returning combatants. 1Up also confirmed that the game is going to be a 2D fighter, but the characters are 3D based. Hey, looks like that Surfer gal was mostly right. Capcom hasn't revealed what platform the game will be on, but 1Up is guessing PS3, X360 and Arcade and not to mention that Surfer Girl also said the same thing (excluding the Arcade bit). The upcoming issue of EGM will have 13 pages of info including hands-on coverage of the game. Check out the gallery for a better picture of Ryu about to kick some ass.
So anyone else thinks this looks really ugly so far? Also, whoever did the cover art for the Street Fighter IV issue of EGM needs to be fired. His head is so tiny! [Update: Just so we're all on the same page, the cover art was provided by Capcom. -- CTZ]
[Editor's note: Dtoider Macca just happily pointed out that either Ryu has a cucumber in his pants or that he's just really happy to see everyone. Also cocks indeed.]
[Update 2: Capcom sent over a Press Release. Check it after the jump.]
[Thanks, Kadosho!]
CAPCOM® KICKS OFF THE NEXT GENERATION OF FIGHTING GAMES WITH STREET FIGHTERTM IV
The Next Round of the Definitive Fighting Game Experience Combines 3D Graphics with Classic Street Fighter Feel
Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today officially announced development of Street Fighter™ IV, the next iteration of the genre-establishing fighting game series. This marks the first new entry announced in nearly eight years, following the acclaimed Street Fighter III Third Strike.
In its amazing twenty year history, Street Fighter has revolutionized the fighting genre and created a global legacy like no other. Few details have been released on the new game, outside of a heart-pounding preview trailer that set the gaming community on fire when it was released in October on the official website, StreetFighterWorld.com.
Capcom is proud to announce the return of four classic "World Warriors" in Street Fighter IV: returning favorites Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Dhalsim. The characters and environments are rendered in stylized 3D computer graphics (CG), while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes. The traditional six-button controls for the game will return, with a host of new special moves and features integrated into the input system. Mixing tried-and-true classic moves and techniques with all-new, never-before-seen gameplay systems, Street Fighter 4 brings a brand new fighting game to fans the world over.
Everything that made the legendary Street Fighter II a hit in arcades, living rooms and dormitories all over the world has been brought to bear here, with even more surprises. With the inclusion of Capcom's latest advancements in new generation technology, Street Fighter IV promises to deliver an extraordinary experience that will re-introduce the world to the time-honored art of virtual martial arts.

Yes, the graphics are a little weak at the moment, but the only thing standing out in my mind is that gameplay is going to be 2D, so I know their heads are in the right place, which is in getting the gameplay right. Graphics are second.
Looks like art to me. Some of you need to get some perspecive - and your own POV.
If this is how the game is gonna be, count me out. 3rd Strike is where SF ended its legacy. I'm done.
I thought that with more power we would start to see graphics which looked more organic, loose and basically like the original concept art, but the dawn of HD gaming has seen graphics take a completely different direction - too much detail in the wrong places and beyond the field of vision which makes the entire game world lack depth, shiny plastic looking textures, and very conservative use of colours and styles. It's as if new art styles have been outlawed.
I'm sure Capcom know what they are doing, and they are well aware of the direction they have decided to take with SF4, fair enough, I just really really don't like it. Looking through the excellent 'Capcom Design Works' book, only enhances my disappointment about the way SF4 has turned out.
How many copies did Street Fighter III: Third Strike sell outside of Japan? Not as many as any of the 3D fighters I reckon.
It'd be nice if they put this game on Wii. Wii could definitely pull off those graphics.
It sounds like they're bringing back more older characters than they did it SF3. I hope Dan returns.
Capcom appears to have reinvented the 2D Fighter and I say. IT'S ABOUT FREAKIN TIME! Just like Capcom did in 92 with SFII. They're doing it again in 2008. I predict future fighters will start to copy this new 2D engine style. I'm so looking forward to this I could cry.
Optimism: Maybe it's an unlockable mode? Please? Pretty please?
Some of guys don't think out of the box do you? You want the same shit every year apparently. Give SFIV a chance! You haven't even seen it action yet. How dare Capcom try something new. I wish it looked like SFIII from ten years ago, whaa!!!
All the characters in Odin Sphere are highly-rendered 2D sprites...just like what Capcom is trying to do with Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix. That's not cel-shading. What I'm saying is take those high-res sprites and give them fluid animation. Expand upon what SFIII did, if you will. There's an opportunity to do new things with 2D here now that consoles have all this additional power, and it seems like Capcom is letting this chance go to waste in favor of (admittedly-stylized) cel-shaded 3D.
You are wrong. More robots makes everything better.
I'm kinda anxious to see Chun Lee.
Winner!
Just look at this still from that trailer. I've never seen a cel-painted animated film this detailed.
That would have been an original look, while staying true to SF's 2D roots. Why did Capcom dump that direction in favor of this? SFIV should have more to it visually than "Generic 3D fighter, plus bloom lighting".
Well, it's early yet. Maybe they get that "painter-shader" up and running before the game is done.
If not, I'll probably just sit this one out.
NexCros don't limit your thinking. That's yesterdays news. It's been done before. Who says this game isn't in high-res and has fluid animation. Capcom is trying something that's never been done before in a fighter. Give it a chance. You haven't even seen it in motion. Also, I'm not a big fan of SFIII, not the gameplay or look. I was actually disappointed by it. It one of the most anticlimatic game releases ever for me.
I'm NOT a fan of the new (old?) character designer though. I prefer the art style of SF3 and what Udon does. I just want to see this thing in motion though. I'm excited.
Don't forget, 3d gaming on a 2d plain is very Viewtiful Joe, and that game was a new hit too. There's no reason why SFIV couldn't work out to be just as good if not better than the VJ games, and still have that classic SF gameplay intact.
I know about those PS1/2 SF EX Alpha games, since I own them. Those games were luke warm at best and I hope to god Capcom have learned their lessons. What does worry me, is the fact that 3d graphics can cut the kind of fast gameplay SF needs for harder settings (something 2d games don't have a problem with), and also that this game is being handled by Capcom USA, and not Capcom Japan. SSF2T is one thing, but SFIV I don't know.
Have patience, all will become clear soon enough. Also don't forget Capcom will be watching the popularity of SSF2THD, and SFIV once both are out, they'll know which gamers prefer and hopefully learn from that info.
Bet when you see it moving it will be coolio!
Oh wait, no I'm not. People are burnt.
