First good look at EA Sports MMA photo

In the grand pantheon of things I have no place writing about MMA might be the top dog. However, last night on CBS's Saturday Night Fight EA ran an ad for their upcoming MMA game, EA Sports MMA and so I must bring you this information since I cover this sort of thing on the weekends.

The ad, which you can view below, shows off about a full minute of gamplay and two MMA fighters who I assume those who know MMA know pretty well. From Nick's previous research I understand that the UFC is really the top dog around these parts, so I don't know if anyone is actually excited for this. Any MMA fans see anything that gets their juices flowing in this trailer?

Hey a post not made by Jim today, i applause you good sir. I hope this game actually turns out to be good. I wonder if white will really kick people out of UFC if they sign up for this game...

I saw these two fight on TV last night, I wanna say it was CBS? Fedor got his nose broke and then hit there quite a few more times, bleeding all over Brett, then in the second round Fedor knocked him out with one punch. I didn't understand it, really, it was a KO but there was no count. It seemed like Brett could have come back to his senses in a bit. I suppose Fedor could have just kept beating him while he was stunned, so that's why they call it so quick?

@CapnCrunk

Its called a Technical Knock Out, and its precisely why you said it, the 1st punch knocks him out momentarely which makes him defenseless. The moment a fighter can't defend himself anymore (be it because of a barrage of punches he doesn't respond to or being phyisically unable to) he has been techincally knocked out. Also there is no count in MMA because fights can happen on the ground or not

As for the game, the movement did look very fluid, hopefuly it'll be good. I'm hoping they can ask the guys from FNR4 for their graphical engine tho

The only participant actually in UFC at this time is Randy "The Natural" Couture, who apparently made the deal with EA while in a contractual dispute with UFC, which is why he is not in the UFC 2009 game. Dana White HAS overtly stated his willingness to blacklist anyone (else) participating in the game... in practice, the more skilled-and-marketable you are, the more likely he's willing to forgive and forget.

The referee in the trailer is "Big" John McCarthy, long associated with UFC but actually appointed by state athletic commissions... probably the only reason that Steve Mazzagatti got to be in the UFC game, and there he doesn't have any voiceover.

I'm not sure it was worth it for them to put out this preview so far away from the game's release. It showed how far away they really are from making a good game, but I would like to see where EA can take the genre.

I'm looking forward to seeing what direction they take it.

@ Chortles: I thought the reason Randy is in this and not Undisputed is because he had already signed his likeness to EA when he appeared in Red Alert 3.

Looking good, definitely. I'm still more interested in the envitable UFC 2010 for now, but if EA Sports MMA does everything that UFC did right (deep fighting mechanics, good commentary, punishing knockouts) while fixing the bad (wonky character animation, somewhat broken online play & a weak career mode), EA will definitely have my money.

Well Vince, I can already cross "good commentary" off that list, cause the footage shown had commentary from Mauro Ranallo, aka the worst commentator in MMA. I'm interested in this still, but the close affiliation with Strikeforce is a bummer. I was hoping for FIFA style, with promotions like Dream, Sengoku, etc. Or at least hoping for no Ranallo and -God no- Frank Shamrock on commentary. Those two are AWFUL. That's honestly one of the aspects of SF that makes it look most inferior to the UFC. Why not just get Quadros and Bas Rutten??? / rant.

I'd rather listen to Ranallo than Rogan and Goldberg. Also, get this to PC you evil publisher no. 2 aka EA! This also applies to THQ - well, not the evil publisher part.

So it's trying to be 1990's cool eh? Why do people still think Tribal tattoos are awesome? They just re-enforce douchebaggery.

What "tribe" do shitty "tribal" tattoos represent exactly? I've always wondered that. It's probably the tribe of shitiots that go to a tattoo shop and get whatever they see hanging on the wall.

Man, you guys are angry! Maybe it's because they think it looks cool? Who gives a shit...it's their skin.

@ reindall-

If you'd rather listen to Ranallo make the lamest pop culture jokes and references in recent memory all night long, I feel sorry for you. The guy is an abomination, and the production overall is bush league. At least they did away with the "muscled skeleton" graphics to show such oh-so-complicated techniques as a jab.

Sounds about right, so I retract my earlier implication due to poor recollection that Couture signed for the MMA game, though he's subsequently confirmed for it.

UFC 2010 was already announced at E3 2009. As for more than just Strikeforce, expect DREAM due to its cooperation with Strikeforce, to the point of using a cage (albeit with fish netting instead of a chain-linked fence) and 3x5 rounds instead of 1x10 + 1x5 at its 12th show.

@Bionix_01
I believe EA Sports President Peter Moore's word over Dana White's. There, I said it.

The "muscled skeleton" thing is kind of... annoying. Doesn't help that it was HILARIOUSLY inaccurate when Babalu vs. Mousasi happened, as both fighters came and basically did the opposite of what the animation segment suggested they do.

Note re: "tribal" and douchebaggery: You're not the only ones to mock the macho culture that sometimes surrounds MMA, even UFC color commentator Joe Rogan had a HILARIOUS rant on the subject (minus the tattoos, but mocking the tendency towards gaudy shirts).

Commentary: Just be glad it's not Michael Schiavello, guys! (DREAM's English color commentator for HDNet Fighters; Guy Mezger is play-by-play.) Listening to him yell, "There's nothing we can't do together! Me commentating, and you fighting!" after a fighter's win, and him basically making orgasm noises at a legend's entrance...

My only real want from either EA Sports MMA 2010 or UFC 2010 -- that the game be closer to cage-based MMA than just "kickboxing with clinches, takedowns, and a grappling mini-game" (UFC 2009). Where's the cagework such as being able to tackle a guy INTO the cage, where's the sheer depth and surprisingness that can go into the ground game (can you say gogoplata? Omoplata? Heck, crucifix neck crank?), where's the ability to slip punches, where's more unique fighting styles than just 'unique individual strikes for fighters who happen to be hot as of the development cycle,' where's being able to bob and weave*, EVEN BEING A SOUTHPAW?

* Okay, maybe this can be Anderson Silva-only.
