Since announced, some of us have been a bit curious as to how Electronic Arts' attempt to take down Tony Hawk with Skate would look. Wonder no more, hipsters, 'cause here's the first "gameplay" video of Skate in action. What do you think?
Camera angle is what I noticed the most, as most skateboarding videos are shot in a similar mannor as someone skates besides and holds the camera at a lower angle....thats looks cool
Hmmm. I'm not convinced. I'm a big fan of the Tony Hawk's games and this doesn't look as fun. Granted it's just a small clip, but it seems too slow somehow.
Looks more authentic than Hawk. I skated for 9 years or so and watched a lot of sk8 vids, I'm definitely interested, that's for sure. Project 8 does have a better trailer, though.
i've been psyched for this one for a while... animation left a lot to be desired.. be intersting to see if the more realistic approach attracts as many gamers as the combo happy hawk.
While the camera angle is like in skate movies which looks nice, I don´t think that it will make the game easier. I think for playing a skateboard game the camera like in Tony Hawks Skateboarding is better.
I do like the fact that the look has a more realistic tone than the Tony Hawk games, but that's about it. Plus, I'm not really a big fan of EA and I'd rather have explosive diarrhea!
This is what a next-gen skateboarding game should look and feel like. Project 8 to me was just Tony Hawk 3 with a next gen resolution and textures, some physics, and a slo-mo effect. I hope this is a more realistic approach to simulated skateboarding, that's what it looks like they're trying to do. I'm interested, but nothing blows me away.
I'm of the "it looks neat" opinion too. I appreciate the realism after all the Tony Hawk ridiculousness of grinding for 10 minutes straight. I'm much rather get good at this game than that.
I think it looks great. With EA Big handling development, good ol' Tony has some actual competition this time around. I could do without the 'Express Yourself' track running in the background, even though it's being used to make a point, but I could get off to hearing the raw sounds of ball bearings, wheels, and wood on concrete all day long. This game is gonna be ill.
As I am a skateboarder, I gotta say, this is a pretty rad looking game. It's not so fucking combo heavy and unrealistic. Sure, tony hawk's project 8 looked real, but It did not play real at all. This is the game I'm going to be able to play and then get psyched and skate....hopefully. You have to realize, most tricks in skateboarding take a long time to learn, and you usually never see quarter pipes built in streets. This is gonna own. Don't fuck it up for me, EA.
Yeh, if this can pull of a more realistic feel I'm definitely interested. I love Tony Hawk games but a realistic skating game would be a real nice change. There's something more satisfying about the animations and sounds in Skate.
Even if Yella, makes it acapella...
I guess we haven't heard that song enough while playing GTA3. I say put Fuck The Police on there an other NWA sing along song.
I think this game looks good. I've been bored with skateboarding/"Xtreme" style games in general ever since I beat the first Tony Hawk on Playstation. It's the same thing over and over again. It would be interesting to play a skateboarding game with a minimalist UI and simulation style gameply. I think it would be a lot more satisfying when you do well too, because anyone could pull off the most ridiculous and impossible tricks in the old THPS games after 2 minutes of practice. Plus it looks great.
I thought, and still think, project 8 is awesome. I don't drive a skate board in real life though, so I may be off on the realism aspects. As far as the fun go...it's great. I hate that fucking black border on the game. I hope it's not permanent like NBA Homecourt.
I like the camera. Be interesting to see if it's that fluid in the final game. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a demo of this when it comes out to see how it feels.
it looks cool i guess, but the one thing no one is talking about, is the controls. im new to the tony hawk games i just started playing project 8, and when i try to play the undergounds i relized you can't just push square (ps2 by the way) to do a Manual, you have to press up then down and to connect a combo is much harder too. so im curious to see how thats going to work out. and also in the tony hawk games you have challenges such as hit a high combo, this game looks like you just skate for fun with a bad camera angle the whole time. so i guess we all will just have to wait and see what happens with this game and where, EA take it
wow jeffk6 where have you been?!?! lol how have you JUST gotten into tony hawk now? anyways, I didint even know there is a manual button in TH8. and ive made it all the way to rank 4 by now lol. when they first put the manual in the game, thats how it was (up/down) I am so used to that its second nature. pressing just one button just seems too easy to me.
Seriously jeff, where can I find a full sized version of your avatar?
I like the game so far. Tony Hawk is great, but new flavors never hurt anyone. Plus, as a few of you already have shown in this comment page, the purists will love it.
I found it interesting that the music started after the first trick was landed... maybe this is an element in the game?
And the camera view is neat-o. Maybe the point of the game is to make the best skate video EVAR!

Graphics wise....*cough*
Project 8 realized this, and put in special "photo op" minigames. like... Tony hawk games are never about that oneeeee sick ass grind.
it's not about the trick combo. hopefully his new game will shake things up some more
I guess we haven't heard that song enough while playing GTA3. I say put Fuck The Police on there an other NWA sing along song.
Skate is trying to be realistic, i.e. Gran Turismo.
THPS is trying to be unrealistic, i.e. Burnout.
WTF there's a manual button? Me no use.
That avatar is completely awesome.
