So, Nuts & Bolts – I guess that is the official name now. Let’s all pour out a 40 for Banjo-Threeie. I think we all secretly wanted it to be called that.

Let me just save you all the trouble and yell out a collective “ARGH!” If you are like me, you are more than confused by the strange new direction this upcoming Banjo-Kazooie sequel (?) is taking. I was more excited than words for it as of last week, but after seeing the leaked screens and now this gameplay trailer ... I just don’t know.

I am going to give Rare the benefit of the doubt, though, and not pass judgment until I can get my hands on the game. And I have to say, I love the music. Like, a lot.

But then there is the very questionable framerate. And the overly busy graphics. And that strange new look for Grunty. And the seemingly heavy focus on vehicular combat. What is vehicular combat doing in my Banjo-Kazooie game? For every little thing I like (it looks like Mumbo Jumbo is back!) there seems to be five things I don’t.

And what the heck is up with Banjo and Kazooie blasting the head off that Mario structure at the end of the trailer? That is just effed up and seriously weird.

What do you all think? Am I just being overdramatic because I was hyping the game up too much, or do I really have cause for concern? Don’t mess up my precious baby, Rare! Please.

Looks like a new IP with an old brand slapped on it. tsk tsk. Never played Banjo much, wasn't into it- I know enough though, that this is not it.

They hardly showed any platforming. :( I wanted a platformer with shiney 360 graphics. Also I hope to god that music is not in the game.

Looks like a great game. Just not a Banjo Kazooie game. Goddamnit Rare couldn't you have just made an original IP instead of slapping the Banjo-Kazooie name on this? And also Rare WTF is with all the Nintendo hatred? Rare feels so much like they belong with Nintendo, given the colorful and fun undertones in Games like Banjo. Until Rare realizes this they will not see their true potential sales-wise or creativity-wise.

I can't believe so many people are upset by this. Who knows maybe they're just showing a bunch of the new gameplay type but there are equal amounts of platforming and vehicle stuff.

I watched the trailer again and I said, yep that still looks fun.

Fucking goddamnnit!

I legitimately wanted a proper old skool sequel to Banjo-Tooie. I couldnt give a fuck how innovative it was, i just wanted a classic platform game like the other two.

I aint saying i dont like it. It does look interesting... I just wish that it wasn't the new Banjo sequel.

Hey we're too lazy to make the vehicles....you do it....oh and here is some shitty Nintendo Wii-like mini-game to mess around in for a couple hours before you get bored and throw this crap out the window...

Also the blowing up of mario's head was a little bit...undignified.

With the vehicle combat looking like its a big part of the game, it looks like Microsoft took a big dump on another rareware classic.

This is NOT a Banjo Kazooie game.I wouldn't be so pissed if they decided to create a whole new IP for this, but this another example of taking an amazing IP, completely gutting out what made it great, and trying to "re-invent" the series.

@Jim,

I actually don’t quite agree with you on this one. :)

Rare made the creative decision to set this game in the Banjo-Kazooie universe. With that comes expectations (especially since the first two games were straight-up platformers). If the next Die Hard movie was a romantic comedy, people would find it a little odd -- even if it turned out to be an awesome romantic comedy!

Had Rare decided to make this an original IP I would probably be more excited. I love the Banjo-Kazooie games and I really wanted another game in the same light as the first two. This just looks a little too different for my tastes.

I would feel the same way with any classic series that I wanted a sequel to. If a new Pikmin game is announced and it is a kart racer instead of an amazing strategy/action hybrid like the old games you can bet I will be bummed! :)

Right, well I've changed my mind. I just watched the youtube video where the guys says "Kazooie's moves have been removed" and are replaced by the blocks. That's retarded.

If they kept his moves and just added vehicles, fine. But why remove what makes running around fun?

Eugh, what is Rare thinking? I was really looking forward to this until I saw that trailer. Last time I checked that isn't the desired effect of a teaser, especially when you're a fan of the series. :(

Perfect Dark and now this, cheers Rare but it looks like I'll just be replaying the N64 originals and avoid this. This could of been a truly epic platforming collectathon, I still hope it is but I won't hold my breath.

God damnit. Ill try to keep a lid of mu frustration until I play the game but lets be honest. Current consoles (wii aside) need an excellent platformer. Rare has made some of the best and we all wanted a new Banjo game and we wanted it to be a freakin platformer.

If this is their direction why didnt they just create a whole new IP instead of pissing us off? Changing an excellent franchise is a bad move when fans of said franchise are clamoring for a next gen update. They better release the original 2 games with some updated graphics on XBLA real damn quick before i revolt!

I would honestly laugh my ass off if someone got sued because of that Mario thing. That's really all I want to see at this point.

Showing off a game is one thing, but taking another company's mascot and decimating it is crossing the line --- I don't care which company we're talking about. Way to be unprofessional when showing a much-anticipated game, guys. The gameplay may look good, but I just lost respect for whoever thought that one up.

So, it looks like this could actually be very good and lots of fun. However, be that as it may, this is not what I want. Call me crazy, but this looks more like a spin-off game than a proper sequel. I would have been fine with another "uninnovative" platformer.

Necros has got my opinion nailed down, really. While this looks like a solid game in its own right, it's not the Banjo-Kazooie I played before. I didn't ask for new, I wanted more of the same with small twists and variations. For the first time I'm looking at a product that brings new things to the table and saying "no thank you."

Rare: Due to our sputtering game development competency of the last five years, we've realized we'll never create a platformer near the Mario Galaxy caliber so we've decided dabble in the action racing genre. It's okay though, we'll just symbolically decapitate Mario at the end of the trailer to show the world how fucking huge our balls are!

The game will have both platformming and racing elements.

Maybe if you guys think for a second the racing was for the multiplayer and platforming is for single player.

The whole thing reminded me more of Ratchet and Clank than the BK franchise. It's not the idea of building and opertaing vehicles that bugs me, it's the whole technologically-advanced-futuristic-y sheen that the whole thing has that makes it seem compeletely alien from the original spirit of the games. Like making an open-world Mario game in downtown New York. It just doesn't "click" I guess.

ZekeThePlumber: "Kazooie's status has been downgraded from FUCKING AWESOME to PET BIRD."

Poor Kazooie. She was such an awesome role model for me when I was eight years old. xD But if they take away any of her snark in this game, it will be the final nail in Rare's coffin.

And glad to see I'm not the only person who yelled "Holy shit! Mr. Patch!" halfway through. ;D

I’ve never played either of the prior Banjo-Kazooie games, so I don’t really have any perspective on this. But as far as I’m aware, they were both platformers (correct me if I’m wrong). Rare REALLY seems to be putting the vehicle aspect of this game at the forefront, with the platforming as an afterthought — of the two minutes of footage in the trailer, only about 15% consisted of platforming; the rest was the Mario Kart-esque stuff. I don’t really care either way, since I don’t have a 360, but I can definitely see why most people are very upset by this trailer.

I think I'll just go back and play the Gummi Ship levels from Kingdom Hearts and call my ship the Banjo-Threeie instead. That way I can save myself $60.

I'm more than willing to take the bait again if they show us that game is more than vehicular combat though.

what is wrong with you guys? It's like a video game version of Scrapheap Challenge, only instead of Kryten without the mask you get antromorphic animals!

I don't really miss the old N64 games much to be honest, something I didn't like about the Rare platformers (though it wasn't bad, like Donkey Kong 64 was) but this is pretty interesting. It seems to me that whilst this video focuses on thenew mechanic, the old stuff doesn't have to be lost.

I'm taking down names here, in case I catch any of you complaining that there are too few new ideas out there.

I kind of wonder if the vehicular combat part isn't taken from Banjo Pilot that was on GBA. Anyways, that aside I'm still totally excited for this game. The music almost made me pull a Chad and run around screaming while ripping my shirt off.

Heh. Donkey Kong 64 was terrible, and pretty much all the RARE games after that, with Jet Force Gemini being the least terrible.

@ loquax: I lol'd.

You crazy kids and your vehicles. Seeing as climbing into a vehicle typically means "time for a pointlessly hard minigame" I understand the ZO NOES that this news is getting.

I can’t think of a game that was simultaneously both a great platformer AND had good vehicles.

Star Fox was a great flight fighter and became a horrible, horrible platformer. A game based on building your vehicle is totally awesome, but it’s not very Banjo Kazooie, not anymore than being an idiot on some jungle planet was what folks thought of when the words "Star Fox" came to into their minds.

Mario wisely only ever changes his suit.

I may have found the reason to mario's appearance. Taken from the rareware site:
"Tired of the feuding between bear, bird and witch, a new player has stepped in: the mysterious Lord of Games (LOG), said to have been involved in creating every videogame ever released. He whisks the rivals away to his creative HQ in Showdown Town, and into an elaborate series of challenges held within his hand-made worlds. The winner gets the ownership deeds to Spiral Mountain, the loser an eternity of toil in LOG's videogame factory. The game is on!"

The build a car thing is a lot too much for my tastes but the graphics/music look wonderful. If they can package this at $60 with the Newton or whatever the MS wiimote is called, well that would be a pretty good deal. I think the Mario thing was probably put in as a joke after the Goldeneye debacle and it stayed in til now. I laughed when they blew the mustached plumber's head off
