So, Nuts & Bolts – I guess that is the official name now. Let’s all pour out a 40 for Banjo-Threeie. I think we all secretly wanted it to be called that.
Let me just save you all the trouble and yell out a collective “ARGH!” If you are like me, you are more than confused by the strange new direction this upcoming Banjo-Kazooie sequel (?) is taking. I was more excited than words for it as of last week, but after seeing the leaked screens and now this gameplay trailer ... I just don’t know.
I am going to give Rare the benefit of the doubt, though, and not pass judgment until I can get my hands on the game. And I have to say, I love the music. Like, a lot.
But then there is the very questionable framerate. And the overly busy graphics. And that strange new look for Grunty. And the seemingly heavy focus on vehicular combat. What is vehicular combat doing in my Banjo-Kazooie game? For every little thing I like (it looks like Mumbo Jumbo is back!) there seems to be five things I don’t.
And what the heck is up with Banjo and Kazooie blasting the head off that Mario structure at the end of the trailer? That is just effed up and seriously weird.
What do you all think? Am I just being overdramatic because I was hyping the game up too much, or do I really have cause for concern? Don’t mess up my precious baby, Rare! Please.

Here is some more info on the game from the GH4 issue of Game Informer.
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (360)
- RARE says they didn't want to make a hi res version of the old Banjo platformer.
- You create vehicles with parts you find around the levels.
- GI says their first vehicles was a 4 wheeled kart with a spring attached to the bottom that allowed them to jump things. They later found a helicopter blade that allowed their kart to fly. Later they added balloons to the vehicle and put the blade on the back and created a hovercraft.
- RARE showed them a vehicle that was a monster truck that was able to detach its chasis to become a mini bike. When the bike ramped off a cliff it revealed collapsible glider wings and started flying.- There will be 1,600 parts including weapons that you'll be able to attach to the vehicles.
- The town is called Showdown Town.
- GI says that despite the large focus on vehicles it still features platform elements from the previous games like traditional platforming, tight rope walking and jiggy piece collecting.
- Showdown Town is 16 times larger than anything RARE has created before.
- Every level has a different intro. Nutty Acres begins with a credits spoof of 80's soap opera's like Dallas.- Note collecting is back and will act has currency that'll allow you to bu vehicle blueprints.
- RARE says there are 15 different challenges spread across 6 different levels. There will also be side missions.
This game will be vastly different than previous entries in the series.
I'm scared for this game now, Rare get benefit of the doubt though because they're Rare. It does at least look like there will be traditional platforming in there though.
I get the feeling this game is trying to do too many things at once. Is it a platformer, a racing game, a mario kart game, a twisted metal game, an adventure game, a puzzle game, a soccer game, a collection of minigame games? It seems like they couldn't make up their mind so they just tried to do everything.
So the last clip of that trailer is Banjo and Kazooie blowing off Mario's head... way to bite the hand that feeds.
Anyways, FUCK THIS VEHICLE SHIT. Now, I don't mind it, but I don't care how much Rare tells GI that theres going to be the standard platforming stuff, it looks like platforming is just going to be an afterthought.
It looks pretty cool how parts of the main vehicle can detach to form new vehicles, like the glider thing in the trailer. I don't know about this vehicle focus though..looks like you may be in it for a good part of the game.
Basically, this game is frightening because it's got Banjo and Kazooie in it? If it was an original IP would it be less scary?
Speaking as someone who never played the original games, I'm down with it. Looks original and weird, and if there's one thing the 360 needs, it's something original and brightly colored.
Argh. My fears seem to be coming true. I just wanted some good old fashioned platforming.. sigh. Though the extra information that power-glove provides sounds interesting, I can't help but feel a little disappointed. And the name! Ugh. I am really curious about the role all of the returning characters will play in a game like this.. are we going to traverse the inside of Clanker with a boat?
All that aside, I knew the soundtrack would be awesome, at least.. Grant Kirkhope is a magical musical man.
Plenty of reason for concern. I had a lot of skepticism when I heard Rare was taking Banjo to the 360 instead of staying Nintendo. A lot of possibilities both good and bad can come from this. This is probably an early video anyways, and they've got a LOT of work to do, but I hope the graphics aren't anywhere near finalized. The N64 versions look better than this if so...Hell we've seen what they can do with Conker...and that was only the XBox.
Well, looks like this will be one of the odd cases where I enjoy something because I've never played the series. From an outside perspective, this game looks fucking sweet and I can't figure out what everyone's whining about. Then again, that's coming from someone who has never played any of the previous 'Banjo' titles. I suppose if they turned Fire Emblem into a Kart Racer I'd be upset, too.
No, wait actually that could be pretty sweet.
Anyway, guys, my point is, even if this isn't what you were hoping for in a 'Banjo' sequel, doesn't it look fun? How can making your own custom vehicles and racing/jumping/flying/blowing shit up with them not look fun? I totally understand where you guys are coming from with the "this isn't the game I wanted" rap. But, can you step outside of your expectations for a minute and see that this could be really awesome? A rose by any other name, right?
I'm with Jim on this one so far. Its probably because I never played the originals that this looks somewhat interesting. Not sure its a "must have" for me, but it looks decent. I doubt I'll buy it, but it might be worth a rent.
This looks like Microsoft's attempt at "ratchet and clank for the 360." Bright colors, lots of moving parts etc.
Even so, having played the other Banjo Kazooie games I think that this game looks like it could be fun. I didn't expect vehicular combat, but I'm not crying about it. Calm down people.
It's definitely different than expected, but I'm not disappointed at all. The vehicles and wide open areas seem overwhelming, but I've got faith in the crew. I believe that the director and the music composer are the same guys who worked on the first two, so the heart of the game will still be there.
My only gripe is the potential name. I was looking forward to Banjo-Threeie, but on the other hand, so long as a bear with yellow shorts and a red bird go around collecting music notes, it'll still be Banjo Kazooie to me.
I think that this game would have been awesome as a stand alone title, but when you take the -years- of waiting for a third game in the franchise, it's a recipe for disappointment. Rare may not want to make an HD version of the original games, but that is exactly what we were expecting to see.
I really, really hate the "Oh god the game does more than one thing! I'm scared and confused! How dare they make it a platformer and a cart racer!" mindset. Jesus, people.
I played and loved both the original games on the N64, and even was convinced by the license to try the crappy GBA game, and I absolutely adore where they're taking this.
Rare are such haters, to think they had a winning formula and they've messed it up with vehicular combat.
Why would they sacrifice Kazooie's moves just for that?
In the youtube video come posted before the developer said they were evolving the platform genre. This just looks like a step or 5 back.
I think the reason why a lot of us, who have played the first games, are disappointed is because the first trailer was just so damn misleading. Though it didn't show much, it still gave off the impression that the game would be sticking to its platforming roots. Platforming is a dying genre that needed this extra push, but now that we see that that isn't the case.. we feel scared, confused, and that we were lied to. Or maybe that's just me. I am a lady with feelings and emotions, though, so it's okay for me to do that.
Oh Rare, how could you ever trick me like that!
It's not that I lost hope completely.. this could turn out to be a really solid game. The art style is wonderful, as is the music, and Rare boasts a gigantic list of returning characters that I loved from the first two games (Mr. Vile!). But, having the building and driving vehicles as the central focus of this game is something that wanes my interest quite a bit. That's just not my thing.
Argh What the FUCK! I want a goodamn platformer, yeah a lego racing, buling game sounds fund but that could of been made with any characters. Banjo and Kazooie should be in some revolutionary platform game.
Why the vehicles, buldling my own vehicle isn't fun for me at all... I died inside a little today.
Yay, collection of worthless nuts and bolts to build a worthless but "prettier" gummi ship.... looks pretty crappy and like a horrible direction for the once great Banjo and Kazooie games....

Apparently from the impressions I'm reading all over the place, you can tackle missions in different ways depending on the vehicle you build.
Also the multiplayer sounds sweet with races and king of the hill style games.
I'm making the penismobile day 1.
BTW: Why the hell is Mario in this game?

My thoughts exactly.
graphically it looks really good actually. I saw it on my hd tv this morning and it looked fantastic

It looks like fucking Twisted Metal.
HOPPING, AND BOPPING. I see NONE of that. This doesn't seem to have a chance in hell of being better than Mario Galaxy, or anywhere close to it.
I just lost so much excitement for this game. I think I'll fire up the old N64 and play some Banjo-Tooie.
Epic franchise breaking.
Making vehicles could be fun. $60 worth of fun? Doubtful.

also, am I the only one who had read "Nuts and Balls" instead of Nuts and Bolts?
Why the vehicles, buldling my own vehicle isn't fun for me at all... I died inside a little today.
what the hell is the use for kazooie now that whe have fucking flying cars?
Liking the sountrack tho.
Wait, that never happened.
Looks like a fun game, but clearly Banjo's been slapped on the cover, and Kazooie just doesn't fucking matter.
