First footage of CCP's Dust 514, console companion to EVE photo

I've always been academically fascinated by EVE Online -- any game with an economy robust enough to have its own crises is worth noting -- but its mechanics have always seemed remote, obtuse, and cold. Besides buying, selling, and trading, what is there to do, really? The answer to that is "play Dust 514," CCP's recently-announced FPS-strategy hybrid.

After the break, you can find a video of not only the new trailer for Dust 514, but CCP boss Hilmar Peturrson's presentation. "Dust battlefields will dictate who controls specific planets inside the EVE MMO," explains Peturrson, offering the clearest and most concise description of the game I've heard yet. To hear Peturrson tell it, EVE's various contractors and companies will be the ones funding Dust mercenary forces on the ground, the ultimate goal being that "these communities will meld over time." The presentation closes with a bit of cheek -- "While the fleet does the flying, the infantry does the dying" -- and the promise that someone "exceedingly clever" will figure out what the title means.

CCP Shanghai seem to have an exceedingly ambitious project on their hands. I'm not sure how multi-platform guild management is going to work, but I do know that CCP is taking the concept of the MMO in a direction I've never considered before. Most believe that neither MMOs nor real-time strategy games could possibly work on a console, but CCP seems determined to prove them wrong.

That's pretty cool...a game that affects another on-going game

Sounds awesome actually, but does it cost like an MMO, pay to play.

This is a very interesting idea!!

So we will have the PC guys as the Intelligence, the console guys as the infantry and militia? So all that’s left is to let the 360 users fights against the PS3 users.

This is an amazing idea. I never actually want to play EVE, but I'm REAL interested in playing in that world some how.

This sounds insane, why hasn't anybody thought of this before! I could never play EVE but I respect the fuck out of it, to think you could play a console FPS and contribute to the MMO is incredible.

That video near made me crap my pants with joyness. This is some seriously ambitious stuff CCP is hoping to pull off, and I can only wish them the best and promise to buy it on day one.

I think this is a fantastic concept of merging two games together into one giant MMO universe. I really hope they are able to pull this off in a massive scale and not a disappointment like my latest experiences with the Huxley beta program.

Clearly a target trailer, and they should be making Planetside 2 with this concept instead =/.

Not to shit in anyone cereal, but the trailer looks/is heavily pre-rendered and scripted. While awesome and pants wetting, I'm waiting until the EVE Fanfest comes for more info.

I really love the concept of this even though I have no idea how they're going to pull it off. Regardless, the ambitiousness of it has me intrigued.

This kind of game is gonna need alot of players who exist in numbers near the level of CoD to get a world that is immerse enough like that of EvE. We're talking large merc forces and alliances that will need to be maintained at an almost around the clock basis to insure that your EvE player didn't lose his planet cause his merc force wasn't online at the time. Though I will say that I truly hope this takes off cause such a concept of PC/Console interaction, or in general one game effecting another is really outrageous and definitely an ideal worthy of new gens game styles.

quite frankly eve online is one of the few games not swarming with smart mouth kids with hair trigger reflexes - although i have no problem with Dust per se, I'd hate to see it influence Eve playing to any real degree, or to actually have to listen to kids on consoles. I don't really want to spend half my time blocking idiots, or to EVER find myself having to rely on them. Overall - there a re millions of fps games out there. I can even tell some of them apart. Please don't ruin Eve - it's the only online game I've liked in five years :D
