First Fire Emblem DS screens: who do I have to screw to get a new Shining Force? photo

Courtesy of Jeux France, we bring you a gallery containing the first 7 screens from the upcoming DS title Fire Emblem DS, a remake of the original Japanese Famicom classic SRPG. The screens demonstrate a gorgeous art style whose only apparent flaw is seemingly miniscule character sprites.

I'm sure the title will live up to its series' pedigree, but seeing yet another title in the recent resurgence of jSRPGs only makes me misty for the bygone days of Sega's Shining Force series. Where else can you field an army consisting of centaurs, werewolves and shockingly powerful turtle creatures against the kind of Tolkien-esque foes the Final Fantasy series adopted and filled with teenage angst? The House of Hedgehog's recent love affair with the various DLC services would lead you to believe we'd at least see one of these titles repackaged for the VC or XBLA, but we've heard less than crickets from Sega -- we've heard tiny, asthmatic crickets.

Sega, I realize you're all hopped up on the overflowing glee coming from jamming Sonic into Brawl, but you used to be a company known for more than just middle-aged mascots. If you can't give us a new Shining Force title, at least stop desecrating the series with psuedo-sequels that come off as the gaming equivalent of communism-allegory pod people: sure, they look pretty, but they lack the emotion of the originals, and if you prick them, they bleed delicious strawberry jam!

... for some reason.

I didn't really know how to end that. Sorry.

Mate, hear hear!

Shining Force is a metric asston better than all this other crappy "tactics" genre stuff that has been released over the years, and desperately needs a new sequel!

The RPG parts and the levelling up/changing job system makes it way better than the others out there.

Oh, and first, zero, cocks, and all the other crap that people say when they are first comment.

I'll take a new proper Phantasy Star too. They never got a chance to show us something special in that universe that wasn't quasi-mmo sillyness (which I passed on with no remorse)

I do like some Fire Emblem. By the way next this is a remake of one of the early games with Marth (the first Fire Emblem lord). DS fanboy is reporting that the Shining Force developers are making a new game, but it's not Shining Force.

Doesn't anyone else think that these screens look like crap. The new sprites and character portraits, with their pseudo 3d plastic and lifeless art style, are awful compared to some of the great pixel art recent Fire Emblem offerings have given us. A huge disappointment.

Final Fantasy foes Tolkien-esque? Are you sheeting me?! They shamelessly grabbed the name and placed it on the first steroid-raped abomination that show its head out of their arses.

As for Shining Force, totally agree with you, but I still think this's a good thing.

Capn Birdseye: Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics would like a couple words with you on the whole `Shining Force is the best SRPG` thing.

Hm, looks like...Fire Emblem. Well, good to know they're finally getting around to releasing a DS installment. I just don't understand why they're remaking a game that was already remade and expanded upon on the Super Famicom.

Hey, back in the early 90's I played and beat both Shining Force games, and absolutely loved them, but the games had almost no strategy, and do NOT hold a candle to newer tactics games that require you to replay a mission 50 times before one character doesn't die. FFT and any Fire Emblem game can be hundreds of times harder and more infuriating than anything the Shining Force games offered. I would have still loved to see a lot more of those Shining Force games instead of the lame action rpgs. What people should be bugging Sega for is for them to translate and release the entire Shining Force 3 Saturn Trilogy on a newer system. That caused me some pretty hard times back when they said part 2 and 3 wasn't coming out here.

God, I am so hot for Fire Emblem. The art looks real purdy, but yeah the sprites and battle scenes are meh. Still a step up from the GBA version though, I suppose.

Since I have a weird love for SRPGs, I'd certainly welcome a (real) sequel to Shining Force.

Oh Sega, how I took ye for granted in thy glory days.

By the way, you don't really want a pony...

I have love for the Shining Force games. If you love them too, you can't go wrong with Fire Emblem.

I like the new gritty style of Advance Wars, and this FE too.

I was never into Fire Emblem, but you're right. When will Sega get it through their thick skulls that the classic Shining Force and Phantasy Star were great, no need to term them into an action adventure. And is there ever going to be a new Dragon Force? Oh right... Working Designs. Not likely.

If it's not broken, why fix it?

Yeah, this can't come soon enough. I don't even need to see screens or video or anything. If it's called Fire Emblem, I must have it.

This Fire Emblem is a remake of the japanese fire emblem:Shadow Dragons and the Blade of Light. As most of you know Roy and Marth are in Super Smash Bros Melee and Marth is SSBB. They talk in japanese in those games cuz nintendo wuz jus showin that those 2 characterz where from japan only. The new shadow dragons and the blade of light will have both marth and probably roy. And Eliwood is Roy's son. the 2nd game they made for the famicon is Fire Embelm Gaiden. It is a differ side of the 1st fire Emblem. And I think Roy is the star in that one.Oh and u know that big guy Hector from the first Fire Emblem on GB, he is Marth's son. So be happy wit dat info and try not to explode waiting for the Ds Fire Emblem, Good Luck!
