First EA Sports MMA screen looks realistic, smelly photo

Pick up the latest issue of Sports Illustrated and inside you'll find some stuff about sports, yes. But what you'll also find is a single screenshot of EA Sports' upcoming mixed-martial arts title, the cleverly titled EA Sports MMA.

Unless you're Samit or you got a subscription to Sports Illustrated for the swimsuit issue or that free football phone, chances are you didn't see it in the magazine. Trust me, I get it. But fear not, because -- look up! -- that's it right there. Yup, that's not a photograph of photograph of one dude pulling on another dude's arm; that's a screenshot of EA Sports MMA (as posted on the game's Facebook page), a game where you'll be able to make a dude pull on another dude's arm.

No, it doesn't reveal much about the title itself, but damn if that doesn't look like a real photograph of a dude pulling on another dude's arm. THQ basically destroyed retail with UFC 2009 Undisputed, so it's going to take more than pretty graphics -- EA Tiburon (the team working on the game) had better have something else up its sleeve.

If you're a fan of mixed-martial arts, what are you looking for in EA's MMA game that THQ hasn't already brought to the table?

Sweaty, muscular men grappling each other to the floor while wearing nothing but shorts?

Uhh.. I'll pass.

I was really pissed off, when THQ announced a UFC game. I mean these guys from Yuke's are making 3 games a year since 98 and since 2000 it's only fucking wrestling. I was sure Undisputed is going to suck and it actually did, with it's fucking wooden animation 3 kicks and 3 punches. And there is a reason, why it's called UFC 2009. There's gonna be another UFC title in 2010 with a minimum changes, they're gonna start milking it.
I hope EA is going to build it up on that engine used in FNR4, it's physics and close combat system will allow players to use all space of the ring, making fights way more realistic. For Dana and Yuke's UFC is just a show, exactly like wrestling, but with real punches, and they're treating it that way.
EA is not making this game for fans of UFC show, it's going to be a game for those, who love this sport, so it's going to be awesome.

That "relaxed man" is Fedor Emelianenko. I believe that the guy he is armbarring is supposed to be Gegard Mousasi. They had an exhibition match at the M-1 Breakthrough event in August of this year and that ended with that exact same move.

As for your question at the end of the article, I am interested in this title because of the fighters it DOES have. Bas Ruten (the man who introduced me to Krav Maga!), Randy Couture, King Mo, Mayhem Miller, Brett Rogers, Gegard Mousasi, and Fedor Emelianenko and many other non-UFC fighters. I am sure other fighters from M-1, MFC, K-1 and Dream (Japanese MMA league) will be in this game too. That makes me interested because these guys ARE NOT in the UFC title.

Jon B, I'd find it highly ironic to see you make a gay joke about mma if that is you in your picture.

I wasn't trying to troll, I'm just saying, it's ironic that the guy in your pic, assuming that's you, would make a comment about other people being gay.

This "looks" really good, and EA sports games rarely dissapoint with their gameplay / interesting controls.

I'm personally getting back into undisputed at the moment, loving the online fights, got a pretty good 77% win ratio over like 150 fights, mostly KO's.

I will be keen to check out EA's version, I don't care about the fighters, but I do care about the create a fighter mode and as with any Fighting game, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BRUTALITY.

If there's plenty of blood and cuts, and the smashing of faces while mounted, colour me interested.

It'll be interesting to see the control scheme EA thinks up (or improves upon) for the game. Overall, I'll hope for the best, but I'm still getting enough milage out of Undisputed & I'm not too keen on being involved in another Madden v. other sports game rivalry.

Its not just his picture that makes it ironic. What straight man refers to other men as sweaty , muscular men??? Only women and gay guys. Its ok if you're gay Jon B but why try to make others feel the way you do. You deserve these comments for making yours by the way.

The game looks promising. Heres hoping EA can pull it off.

I never got why so many men like wrestling and this. They think of themselves as masculine, but they take enjoyment out of watching muscular men grapple with each other on the floor, getting all sweaty and wearing nothing but speedos. To me it all just seems grossly homoerotic

Hmmm, as a straight man, when I see a man and a woman together I think of sex. The same does not happen when it is two men. But strangely enough it may happen if I see two women together. I think this is the way completely straight men think. When you see two men together and automatically fantasize about them having sex, you would have to be partially homosexual. Or you at least have some unanswered questions. You agree ape?

@Crazyape69:
I used to think that way too. But I was simultaneously into the martial arts, and I knew I was weakest on the ground (where most fights end up anyway), so I started attending an MMA program with most of its focus on jiu jitsu. We don't practice in just shorts, but it is obviously close contact and getting used to that took a while. It would be even harder for guys who aren't as comfortable with their sexuality, I would imagine. It takes some getting used to having your balls planted on somebody's chest or arm.

In the end, though, you find that learning these skills gives you this real element of power and it's addicting. Some guys want to know how far they can take it (and some, like Brock Lesnar, just enjoy hurting people) and they go as far as MMA. I plan to move up at least a belt at my school, but to do that, I have to beat a lot of people at "review matches."

Oh, and the smelly part couldn't be truer. All my equipment still smells after I wash it. It just starts to permeate everything. Small price to pay though.

I'm hoping for a good character creation feature too. I would like to see something like the ability to choose a base art, along with a number of other arts, maybe the ability to unlock more art slots along the way. I hope they put in Karate so I can make me a Michada. Also, I'd finally get to see Evans beat the crap out of Rampage before he pussied out to Hollywood.

I don't hate Dana. To me it seems like a possibility of him just trying to protect MMA from becoming like other sports, highest bidder crap. He can act like a total douche though. Like when he said Fedor was amazing, then decided he was overrated after he didn't go to UFC. It's a shame because he says he wants to fight Lesnar and I just don't think that could happen.

iono...with UFC 2010 coming out next year I don't think I'm gonna be picking this one up. Shame Fedor didn't sign with the UFC cause that would have been an interesting game.

You see what you want to see. I can tell you that I've done jiu-jitsu quite a bit and never found myself thinking "this is really gay" or even "hey, this is kind of awkward and weird". That's probably because I myself am not gay. However, maybe someone who is preoccupied with gay sex would be thinking those things in that situation.

If you are seeing gay sex everywhere you look, maybe there's a reason for that?

I mean, these guys couldn't be sweaty because they are physically exerting themselves, and they couldn't be without clothes because the sport demands it. There HAS to be another motive, right? Or at least one might think so if they were preoccupied with gay sex.

One thing I'm hoping for is that southpaw fighters actually fight southpaw, and the ability to switch between the stances if the fighter used had shown they have in the past.

On the whole 'sexual' thing, it's pretty ridiculous. When I train/fight I'm not thinking anything sexual. It's hard to explain to someone that really has no idea of the sport, or who's mind hasn't developed enough other than to equate two people in close proximity as sexual.

Mind you, it's a cheap gag so I wouldn't be surprised if people like Jon B and CrazyApe weren't actually sexually frustrated; maybe it's just a very poor attempt to get the lulz.

@ Dezroy

People who claim MMA is homoerotic are just lashing out at their childhood. Most of those people were A/V twerps who got beat up, their lunch money stolen and shoved into lockers.

Hand to hand combat is the ultimate form of human expression. Anyone who cries "homo" while watching MMA has likely never been in a fight in their life, and are more likely than not worthless worms who could be hand models, if you follow me.
