Pick up the latest issue of Sports Illustrated and inside you'll find some stuff about sports, yes. But what you'll also find is a single screenshot of EA Sports' upcoming mixed-martial arts title, the cleverly titled EA Sports MMA.
Unless you're Samit or you got a subscription to Sports Illustrated for the swimsuit issue or that free football phone, chances are you didn't see it in the magazine. Trust me, I get it. But fear not, because -- look up! -- that's it right there. Yup, that's not a photograph of photograph of one dude pulling on another dude's arm; that's a screenshot of EA Sports MMA (as posted on the game's Facebook page), a game where you'll be able to make a dude pull on another dude's arm.
No, it doesn't reveal much about the title itself, but damn if that doesn't look like a real photograph of a dude pulling on another dude's arm. THQ basically destroyed retail with UFC 2009 Undisputed, so it's going to take more than pretty graphics -- EA Tiburon (the team working on the game) had better have something else up its sleeve.
If you're a fan of mixed-martial arts, what are you looking for in EA's MMA game that THQ hasn't already brought to the table?
Uhh.. I'll pass.
I hope EA is going to build it up on that engine used in FNR4, it's physics and close combat system will allow players to use all space of the ring, making fights way more realistic. For Dana and Yuke's UFC is just a show, exactly like wrestling, but with real punches, and they're treating it that way.
EA is not making this game for fans of UFC show, it's going to be a game for those, who love this sport, so it's going to be awesome.
As for your question at the end of the article, I am interested in this title because of the fighters it DOES have. Bas Ruten (the man who introduced me to Krav Maga!), Randy Couture, King Mo, Mayhem Miller, Brett Rogers, Gegard Mousasi, and Fedor Emelianenko and many other non-UFC fighters. I am sure other fighters from M-1, MFC, K-1 and Dream (Japanese MMA league) will be in this game too. That makes me interested because these guys ARE NOT in the UFC title.
I'm personally getting back into undisputed at the moment, loving the online fights, got a pretty good 77% win ratio over like 150 fights, mostly KO's.
I will be keen to check out EA's version, I don't care about the fighters, but I do care about the create a fighter mode and as with any Fighting game, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BRUTALITY.
If there's plenty of blood and cuts, and the smashing of faces while mounted, colour me interested.
The game looks promising. Heres hoping EA can pull it off.
I used to think that way too. But I was simultaneously into the martial arts, and I knew I was weakest on the ground (where most fights end up anyway), so I started attending an MMA program with most of its focus on jiu jitsu. We don't practice in just shorts, but it is obviously close contact and getting used to that took a while. It would be even harder for guys who aren't as comfortable with their sexuality, I would imagine. It takes some getting used to having your balls planted on somebody's chest or arm.
In the end, though, you find that learning these skills gives you this real element of power and it's addicting. Some guys want to know how far they can take it (and some, like Brock Lesnar, just enjoy hurting people) and they go as far as MMA. I plan to move up at least a belt at my school, but to do that, I have to beat a lot of people at "review matches."
Oh, and the smelly part couldn't be truer. All my equipment still smells after I wash it. It just starts to permeate everything. Small price to pay though.
I don't hate Dana. To me it seems like a possibility of him just trying to protect MMA from becoming like other sports, highest bidder crap. He can act like a total douche though. Like when he said Fedor was amazing, then decided he was overrated after he didn't go to UFC. It's a shame because he says he wants to fight Lesnar and I just don't think that could happen.
If you are seeing gay sex everywhere you look, maybe there's a reason for that?
I mean, these guys couldn't be sweaty because they are physically exerting themselves, and they couldn't be without clothes because the sport demands it. There HAS to be another motive, right? Or at least one might think so if they were preoccupied with gay sex.
On the whole 'sexual' thing, it's pretty ridiculous. When I train/fight I'm not thinking anything sexual. It's hard to explain to someone that really has no idea of the sport, or who's mind hasn't developed enough other than to equate two people in close proximity as sexual.
Mind you, it's a cheap gag so I wouldn't be surprised if people like Jon B and CrazyApe weren't actually sexually frustrated; maybe it's just a very poor attempt to get the lulz.
People who claim MMA is homoerotic are just lashing out at their childhood. Most of those people were A/V twerps who got beat up, their lunch money stolen and shoved into lockers.
Hand to hand combat is the ultimate form of human expression. Anyone who cries "homo" while watching MMA has likely never been in a fight in their life, and are more likely than not worthless worms who could be hand models, if you follow me.
