First details on Xbox 360's Wiimote-ish motion sensing controller photo

Motion sensing controllers: Nintendo did it up right, Sony tried to do something like it, and now Microsoft is busy working on their version.

MTV News gives us the first details on Microsoft's answer to the Wii Remote. According to their anonymous source, this Wiimote-looking device is scheduled to appear before the end of the year. This source says also that this controller has been in the works since last summer, and it seems that the Microsoft-owned studio Rare has been tasked with creating the interface and look for the controller. The source says that Rare has had trouble meeting deadlines, though.

A sketch of a concept from this source (shown above) reveals that there are four face buttons, an analog stick, and a microphone. There are also plans for the controller to interact with the Xbox 360 camera.

This source doesn't seem to like the idea of this project:

"They want the usual assortment of 'Halo'/ 'Gears'/ 'Forza'/ whatever, just in waggle form," our source told us. Such idea-generation has not gone smoothly. "The whole thing is a colossal clusterf---," the source said. "[Microsoft] marketing just want it so they can match the Wii point for point. The biggest parts of their marketing materials outline how easy it would be for third parties to port their Wii games to the 360."

The source goes on to say that even the Mii concept has been adapted for their use.

What do you think about Microsoft's attempt at the Wii market? How will this be received?
Do you think this will even see the light of day?

But why make it look like a Wii controller?

Wow... I figured Microsoft would try to do this eventually, but I didn't expect them to make something that looks EXACTLY like the Wii controller and say they made it.

I don't think this'll work for the Xbox 360. The Wii is MADE for motion. If MS thinks that they can just come out with this and all will be good, they should think again.

So...it’s essentially a Wiimote with an analog stick where the D-pad would be?

@ Mix

I caught the Mitch Hedberg...reference, but it sucked so horribly and was such a disservice to the man's memory that I thought that it wasn't worth mentioning.

Sorry bro, but while you earn some points for referencing the dude, you lose almost all of them because you managed to do it in such a craptastical manner.

Maybe they're trying to win over the PC FPS crowd, for better FPS controls on a console?

It's not gonna work, though.

Really? So it couldn't be that this is just a bad idea? Like someone above said, what developer in it's right mind would release a game that utilizes the thing if it's not a standard pack-in peripheral?

Granted you could make support optional, but then why bother? The thing screams for games to be made specifically for it, as it doesn't seem to lend itself well to being a secondary control-scheme in games like Gears of War for example.

I dunno man, if they can pull it off, then great. I think it's reasonable that people have their doubts though.

MS is in a position to re-imagine the gamepad for FPS style gaming but instead they squander it by handing off such an important project to marketing suits.

Will someone PLEASE call Ed Fries back to MS's game division.....please?

Microsoft could package the controller in with every game that supports it, each game that supports it could have 2 versions, with and without the waggle stick.

Teh ZOMG M$ iz teh copiez!!1!11!!!

Who gives a shit if they copy the Wiimote? Hopefully Nintendo does the same thing and copies Xbox Live.

I would love it if all the different manufacturers copied the good ideas of each other, and constantly tried to one up each other by inventing new, original concepts.

Thank god complainers like those in the comments are the minority , not the majority, as consumers go.

You know, I was toying around with a controller concept in my head, for when I win the powerball and am able to fund my own video game company to make my own console....

But seeing as how I haven't won the powerball yet, I'm just gonna spill the beans and say this. I was thinking of how nice it would be to have two wireless nunchuck-esque controllers (analog stick with triggers and motion sensing via accelerometers), only making them a little bigger to accommodate some face buttons/dpad that can be used as face buttons. One for the left hand, one for the right hand. Both of which are motion sensitive, and if you prefer to play something "traditional", you could simply put them together via some connector that could double as a charging base.

Yeah, it sounds dumb, but it'd be my millionaire money and not yours.

you know what, i always expected this to happen, because Nintendo was really onto something ever since their innovative remote was first shown back in 2005. right now, i'm just waiting for that ps2 wiimote to come to fruition, which i'm sure it will given some time. the other thing i wanted to point out too is that people really don't give nintendo enough credit for being ballzy and putting a speaker onto their remote in unison with all the other features, most notably the pointer function. audio feedback has really improved the immersion factor in video games in a very subtle way. nintendo need to get props for that.

Looking at this from an engineering perspective, I think this is complete crap.

First, the microphone is bigger than the speaker. Does the person who provided this sketch know how to tell up from down, too? Last I checked, embedded microphones are usually the size of a pencil tip. Second, what the heck is up with the 4-color LED? Is that for sync, or is Microsoft going to realize those early revolution rumors that the system would have a small holographic projector built in?

I have no doubt that Microsoft is considering motion sensors again. But this sketch from a "developer source" is a load of bullshit.

LMFAO

What idiot actually took this seriously, ah well it is MTV I guess?!

1) I somehow doubt MS is going to make a controller lawsuit baitingly similar to the Wii's.
2) The quotes from the 'source' look nothing like the kind of stuff someone privvy to this kind of information would be saying.
3) The 'concept sketch' looks like it was drawn in fucking MSPAINT! C'mon people, a 5 year old could do better than that. It's not even all properly aligned fer Christ's sake.

Seriously though, I'm embarrassed for anyone suckered by that picture. Go do some Googling and compare this to the quality of the average concept sketch for just about anything not designed by a bored junior school pupil on their lunch hour.

I will say what i have always said about mircosoft. Aside from windows (which just looks shinny but runs like shite) everything else that they have ripped of is always better. the zune beats the ipod. the 360 (although it breaks like windows) is phenomenal and the X-cock with beat the wiimote at least at its own game.
