First details on Painkiller: Resurrection are sizzlin' photo

Thanks to an IGN preview, we now know that a sequel to Painkiller exists, and what the next Purgatory-themed first-person shooter is going to revolve around. Coming to us from Homegrown Games, Painkiller: Resurrection starts off with you accidentally blowing up a school bus with C4. Hardcore.

As you might have guessed, the Painkiller (weapon) makes a return, as does the "Heaven vs. Hell" storyline. This time around, however, there will be more emphasis on working for and against the two factions.

Resurrection will also allow two players to tackle the campaign cooperatively (exactly what the series needs), and has multiplayer that features the same enhancements the famous PK++ mod for Painkiller added to the first game.

What really attracted me to Painkiller was its simple yet fun "shoot everything that moves" philosophy that can also be found in games like the original Doom and the Serious Sam series. Boring filler? Nowhere to be found. It was just you blasting away at demons and explosive barrels with some crazy weapons, and that was all it needed to be.

Here's hoping this sequel will stay true to that formula when it releases on PC in Q4 of this year, and possibly gets ported to Xbox 360 later on.

Yes, it's about time that we had a new game that subscribed to the "KEEP RUNNING BACKWARDS" school of FPS design.

I treat Overdose like the WWE treats Chris Benoit.

The last sequel was TERRIBLE, most likely because it was a fan made game. The original game was great, but it was kind of repetitive. I hope they fix that.

If a game starts off with making a school bus explode, accidental or not, you have to play it. It doesn't matter if the rest of the game is filled with unknown horrors that desire to see you dead, while you happen to have the Painkiller which is quite possibly the greatest weapon that has been created in the video game realm.

You blew up a friggin bus, that's enough to make me play.

Talk of "working for and against" the two factions makes me worry the game might try to do something more than it should. If we can just get more awesome enemies in awesome locations with awesome weapons though, it's all good.

I hope they fix the slow ramp-up of awesome Painkiller suffered from. The game doesn't really get good until a couple levels into Act 2, after about 3 hours of pretty mediocre, two weapon play.

Yeah... Overdose was a giant bucket of FAIL. Since People Can Fly isn't working on it, I have very low expectations...

I hope they bring the following:
More different guns, if not the same guns but with some additions.
Some nice eye-candy lokations.
And what I want them to bring back the most is the awesome metal soundtrack when you encouter enemies.
from the expansion Battle out of Hell on, the metal tracks suddenly dissapeard, which made me kind of sad.

Overdose indeed sucked, the weapons didn't have any "oomph" at all.

One thing people forget is that this game was one of the very first FPS games to use Havok physics. I remember downloading the demo level and being able to knock around those corpses hanging from the ropes. It was one of the few times I've been so impressed by a demo that I immediately pre-ordered the full game. Crazy fun.

Painkiller was the shit. No other game's opening sequence had me so excited to play. I don't mean the plot or cinematic or whatever- I was in a graveyard with a flickering dinky flashlight and a shotgun... and fucking zombie skeleton knights started flying out of the graves to the beat of heavy metal music and I started blasting.

THAT is how FPS's should be.
