First details of Square Enix's Nier are ... well ... hmm photo

Ths weekend, a trailer had appeared for Square Enix's all-original IP Nier, something which got me excited due to the promise of what looked like brutal hack n' slash combat. Fresh new details have recently been appeared on the official site, however, that has rained on my parade a little -- not least because it's being developed by the same chaps who did Bullet Witch and Drakengard 2. Oh dear.

The game is set in "a crumbling world plagued by disease and dark, unrecognizable creatures," which pretty much makes it sound like Los Angeles. The hero of this piece is the eponymous Nier, whose daughter has been infected with the "Black Scrawl Virus," for which he must find a cure. He'll need to use "chain attacks and crushing magic abilities" in order to help her. Most people just use a hospital.

The game's hero and his motivation seem quite original, so for that it definitely deserves praise. It's always good to see a Square Enix protagonist who isn't some doe-eyed, floppy haired, pederast fantasy. Still, anything connected to the Drakengard series tends to make me spew up a black mass of writhing, oily tentacles, so I'll be treading cautiously with this one.

I like Hack and Slashes. I think it might turn out ok. As long as it has cool extra features for after youbeat the game. Like maybe a chainsaw...or an unlicensed Nuclear weapon. (throwing out ideas here) Or a fast food server suit! XD. But it looks all right.

i do like the motivation. it makes it much more human imo. the whole "lets save the world because outta the billions of people in this world only 6-7 people will actually try to and we are them" aspect of rpg games is just not very original anymore.

i like rpg's where the main character is fulfilling his needs, not the needs of every other character that he meets and has to complete to progress the story.

This is not a Square game.

Exhibit A: Manly main character.

@ welkstar: on the other hand there are some pointless leather straps and a giant sword.

Oh well. I quite liked Bullet Witch for a cheap thrill, this looks alright. I won't yet say I'm rushing to pre-order but I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

I also got a kick out of Bullet Witch. It was like catching some C-grade sci-fi/horror flick at 3 am: horrendously put together, but a few good ideas and a healthy dose of cheese made it kind of awesome.
It also didn't hurt that I picked it up for less than ten bucks.

So far Nier hasn't blown me away, but I'm always up for a quirky action/adventure of dubious quality, at least as a rental.

"It's always good to see a Square Enix antagonist who isn't some doe-eyed, floppy haired, pederast fantasy."

Protagonist. The antagonist of a story is the opposition; the person or force you root against. An anti-hero protagonist is not the same as an antagonist.

Oops. I meant to type that. Sorry, I wrote this story before I properly woke up. <3

Instead of a stereotypically Japanese main character, we have a stereotypically Western main character.

Hate to give Square credit for anything, but at the very least the main character looks decidedly male.

How racist is it to call los angeles "a crumbling world of disease and dark, unrecognizable creatures"?

Not racist at all? Unless of course you want "dark" to mean "black", which you apparently do.

If the combat in this isn't on Advent Children level, I'm not interested. And I wouldn't say that the motivation is original. How many times have we ventured out to save someone from a mysterious illness? Maybe she caught Geostigma.

Wah? Advent Children was a movie.

@Mr Kite: What difference does that make? Just because it was a movie means that video games can't possibly have equally crazy combat? See: DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi series, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Smash Bros.
