Ths weekend, a trailer had appeared for Square Enix's all-original IP Nier, something which got me excited due to the promise of what looked like brutal hack n' slash combat. Fresh new details have recently been appeared on the official site, however, that has rained on my parade a little -- not least because it's being developed by the same chaps who did Bullet Witch and Drakengard 2. Oh dear.
The game is set in "a crumbling world plagued by disease and dark, unrecognizable creatures," which pretty much makes it sound like Los Angeles. The hero of this piece is the eponymous Nier, whose daughter has been infected with the "Black Scrawl Virus," for which he must find a cure. He'll need to use "chain attacks and crushing magic abilities" in order to help her. Most people just use a hospital.
The game's hero and his motivation seem quite original, so for that it definitely deserves praise. It's always good to see a Square Enix protagonist who isn't some doe-eyed, floppy haired, pederast fantasy. Still, anything connected to the Drakengard series tends to make me spew up a black mass of writhing, oily tentacles, so I'll be treading cautiously with this one.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wait a minute, Jim you hate drakengard?
i like rpg's where the main character is fulfilling his needs, not the needs of every other character that he meets and has to complete to progress the story.
Exhibit A: Manly main character.
Oh well. I quite liked Bullet Witch for a cheap thrill, this looks alright. I won't yet say I'm rushing to pre-order but I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
It also didn't hurt that I picked it up for less than ten bucks.
So far Nier hasn't blown me away, but I'm always up for a quirky action/adventure of dubious quality, at least as a rental.
Protagonist. The antagonist of a story is the opposition; the person or force you root against. An anti-hero protagonist is not the same as an antagonist.
Wah? Advent Children was a movie.
