First 'avatar theme pack' provides Ninja Blade wallpaper and clothing photo

This morning we posted a story in which Microsoft confirmed that avatar clothing would be released continuously for the next six months. MS' Jerry Johnson stated they would be coming out in "theme packs." While that could mean either themed packs of clothing, or clothing bundled with a theme, it seems that an example of the latter is now available.

If you download the Ninja Blade NXE theme, you will also receive ninja parts for your glorified Mii. The pack, which costs 250 Microsoft points, will give you four wallpapers and five ninja parts. Considering the popularity of ninja, it was probably smart to have From Software test the waters.

Originally, dashboard themes were 150 points, but they look awful with the NXE. I'm pretty disgusted that MS is offering a "fix" for this at 250 more points, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I just don't see how customers getting screwed over is a "New" Xbox Experience. Microsoft's been doing that long before now.

Now we can be screwed by something that vaguely represents ourselves, its like wanking but more shameful when you catch yourself in the mirror( buying Microsoft points that is.

On an unrelated matter Jim did you ever send out my face plate?

Personally I think the options for avatars are far too limited for them to start churning out paid for stuff. I hope we're going to see an expansion of free options in the future because not even allowing people to recolour stuff is super lame.

I don't quite get what the deal is with themes, do the new ones not have half the screen obscured by a big, grey blob?

Most of the NXE experience seems to be wholly designed around sucking money from people's wallets and I'm getting pretty sick of it by now. I'm tired of companies like MS locking everything down and restricting people so tightly to feed their greed some more.

It'll be sad if the PC gaming scene really does die out or become far more niche because there's so much more freedom , community and variety in it than all three current consoles together.

The avatars blow. Will I have to pay another 500 points so I can change the shape of the head? The current result was nothing like me so I made Frank Zappa instead. Not that this new experience effects the way I play xbox in any way.

I'll have to resize my background. The difficult part is making the focal point above the white surface but making sure there is something under it so when I load certain menus it doesn't look like crap.

One thing that was disappointing about the NXE is the insall on hard drive function. You still have to change discs for games like Lost Odessy. Well at least the longevity of my disc drive has been increased.

I love the NXE, but the avatars are just silly. I was expecting something that resembled the Mii's, but these are a blatant ripoff.

As for paying real money for digital clothes.. if anyone catches me doing that you have permission to end my life any way you please.

Wow, pretty low even for Microsoft. Exploiting the fact that all the themes they came out with are shit and the fact that no old themes work properly by making you pay for a hopefully decent theme.

That's pretty much bullshit. Couldn't they charge 150 points and give us the clothes for free? Bastards.

Why does new have to mean more expensive?

Microsoft is going to make a killing by selling digital clothes for the cartoon characters. Poor people getting ripped off by rich people makes me sad :(

This should not surprise a single person. Seriously, if this surprised you then you have something wrong. I hated the introduction of avatars from the start. Xbox Wii60, uuugh. Its ok though, change is good right?

Company tries to make money by selling superficial digital crap to consumers; film at 11.

Christ, nobody is forcing 360 owners to buy shit for their avatars. If people want to spend their money on it, that's their right. If buying bling for the electronic person living in their game console makes them happy, awesome.

@ Mxyzptlk

I see what you're saying. Letting people use their money the way they want is right. The thing is, if Microsoft wasn't working on avatars, what else could they be doing? Maybe it wouldn't be significant, but the time being spent making avatar stuff could be put towards something, oh I don't know, more useful. But hey, thats just my opinion, and I don't even know what the "more useful" thing could be. I'm sure some people love the avatars.

I'm still not going to be happy unless they start doing the sensible thing for their community by releasing themes and avatar clothing on the discs of games you purchase at retail. Honestly there is no excuse to make people BUY things like wallpapers and clothes; these things should be included in the purchase price of the game you buy. For example, you buy Gears 2, you get Gears related clothing, etc. depending on the title, you get something related. Why they haven't done this by now is beyond me.

This isn't without precedent. Remember music CDs? They used to just have music but as time went on and more things developed, albums started to include videos, lyrics, wallpaper, and all types of other good stuff.

Seriously, what gives? Why haven't they thought of this, and if they did, why hasn't it been brought up? I don't buy the whole "because they want money" argument because they sure as hell do not (should not?) turn much of a profit with the sales to begin with...so why not give a little atmosphere back to the player? It's not like we don't pay a ton as is...throw me a bone god dammit!

How was anyone ever surprised that microsoft would screw people over? This is exactly why you shouldn't have supported them moving into the console business in the first fucking place. All they're about is fucking their customers while locking them into the shoddy microsoft ecosystem.

If they bundle them in with themes, okay, fine. There are some themes I've bought, a little bonus would be cool.

If they sell the shit separately...bleh. I'm not dropping points just for some stupid digital clothing.
