Besides Arc System's Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (which is already two years old) and a spate of Naruto-licensed games, the 2D fighter Renaissance seems to have curiously skipped over the Wii. The exception to the rule, of course, is Capcom's Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars.
As the company moves to corner Wii owner's need for fighters (and no one else's), it's trying it's best to keep a steady drip of info coming out for the title. To that end, they released two new gameplay videos today featuring Capcom's Morrigan (from Darkstalkers) and Saki (from Quiz Nanairo Dreams) facing off against Tatsunoko's Doronjo and Yatterman-1 (from Yatterman). The videos are after the jump, and you can see some character models in the gallery.
Since I'm a filthy Westerner, I only recognize one of those characters. Whoops.
What I do recognize, however, are beatiful 2D sprites 3D models and frantic gameplay that I will never have the eye-hand coordination to fully understand. I also recognize that (spoiler alert) the Capcom team gets the hell kicked out of it in both videos.
In any case, Jonathan's review was pretty positive, so if you haven't imported Tatsunoko vs. Capcom yet, you can look forward to its Winter 2009 U.S. release, preferably with this arcade stick.
Joseph Leray is a founding Destructoid editor and has better hair than you. He speaks French and needs to send us his updated bio in English, preferably.

Actually, I think the characters are more accurately described as "models" rather than "sprites" here. But they are lovely either way. Especially Morrigan, it's nice that she's finally gotten an upgrade since 1994 (Match of the Millenium and Gunbird 2 notwithstanding.)
It has been a week since the world has heard from the small Eastern European kingdom of Villtania. As scattered reports from the Villtanian refugees who have fled the country dribble in, the world is hearing a horror-filled tale of devastation by monsters and biogeocenosis experiments summoned for war and world domination by Villtania's leading scholar, and self-described sorcerer, Raimond. The once beautiful Villtanian countryside now runs red with the blood of its people. The United Nations have declared an international emergency and while unable to commit any of the world's armies to this strange, supernatural conflict, they have offered a huge reward to any hot-shot mercenaries or hunters brave enough to take on theses monsters from another dimension and restore order to Villtania. Even though the Guilty Gear series has been occupying the fighting game scene for a long time, it's never garnered the same fan base as mainstream franchises like Street Fighter and Dead or Alive. Despite its niche appeal, Guilty Gear is still one of my favorites when it comes to fighting games and it's always great to pick up the latest addition to the series and give it a spin. With the original Guilty Gear XX Accent Core having been released in 2007, ARC System Works has once again brought its quirky fighter to the states in the form of Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus. This version is extremely similar to its predecessor but packs in a few new modes, two characters that had been sorely missed in the original and more of the fast, frantic personal loans gameplay that series veterans have come to love.
I love that damage is measured in the thousands followed by "billion". I think that alone should sell the game. Twelve thousand, one hundred and forty-eight billion damage!
I wonder why it always seems like the team with at least one Capcom character is the one to lose in their videos. Think they've only won once, otherwise it's all Tatsunoko. </nitpicking>
Man, I love watching fighting games with minimum input but batshit insane output. I suck at fighting games, but this might be the game that gets me into them...i hear the controls a simpler than the usual.
@protomark: Saki is in the original build of the game. She is one of the 4 unlockable characters. Capcom is adding 5 new characters and losing the genie guy due to licensing issues.
I need to plug in my Wii and start playing this again. After SF4 and Blazblue, I kind of left this game quicker than a 2nd place runner up for prom queen after she was crying and mascara was running down her face while telling her that maybe she would have won if she lost some weight and lessen up on the clown makeup, fatty.
Dude, normally I would say something about having just spent $60 on BlazBlue and not being able to justify another fighting game purchase, but seriously...I just cummed.
Saki was always in TvC, she was a character you had to unlock like Viewtiful Joe. If you have the japanese version, I recommend downloading a save file with everything unlocked.

Nice wall of text you got there. New here huh?
Doronjo's flunkies weird me out. The Tatsunoko side might take some getting used to compared to any of Capcom's.
Anyone get a Castlevania vibe from the setting and music?
so am i to understand that they are adding new characters for the western release? saki wasn't in this game before :S
In any case i am beyond excited to finally have a reason to play my wii again.
I'm glad this is being brought out here but seriously... it's not that great.

Kinda like that.
You can't go wrong with that.

That being said, what the hell was that Morrigan player doing. Gotta double dash rush into a the combo. Player 1 obviously threw that fight./lulz
