Like Fire Emblem? Like online multiplayer? Today is your lucky day then, you happy boy, as Fire Emblem: New Dark Dragon and the Sword of Light for the DS will boast online battles for the first time in the series. The details come fresh from Famitsu's sticky pages, along with news that the game should hit Japan as soon as August. Dark Dragon is a remake of the 1990 NES original, which was a Japan-only release. It will boast revamped artwork and new characters, along with a Weapon Rank system that replaces the old Weapon Skill system. As to be expected, developer Intelligent Systems will use both of the DS' screens and stylus controls. The online mode lets you take five characters from your single-player game to face off against other players. Fire Emblem fans have a lot to look forward to, it seems.

Hrrrm, but is this going to be actual tactical multiplayer? Or is it going to be the same crappy multiplayer arena combat that the GBA Fire Emblem games had? I don't see why if Advance Wars can let you play full maps against each other that Fire Emblem hasn't done the same thing yet.
The article linked to says:
"The biggest invention is the ability to cobble together a group of five fighters from your single-player game and take them online to fight against your friends."
I would think that this is talking about that bullshit from FE7, but the IGN article they link to says
"You begin an online battle by first creating a team using up to five units that you've built up in the single player story mode. Battles take place over versus-specific maps."
If there are maps, I would think that this would mean that there is actual multiplayer.
As a huge Fire Emblem fanatic, I honestly couldn't care less. Fire Emblem does not lend itself to multiplayer like Advance Wars because you don't have nameless units that you can regenerate as much as you want. FE has specific characters who, once killed, never come back to the battle (in single player, they NEVER come back, but I would presume that they're only gone for the battle if you're in multiplayer). Plus, all of these characters have stats that determine their skill. In this case, it sounds like Fire Emblem's multiplayer would be more like a numbers contest and a flip of a coin.
Yeah, SRPG's don't lend themselves to multiplayer. In fact, SRPG's tend to be the exact OPPOSITE of what makes a good multiplayer game, since the guy who wins is the guy who has spent the most time leveling up his units. Or, if levelling works the same way as it did in previous FE game, whoever gets the luckiest rolls on level up.
Pass. Just give me a great 1P game, since that's all the genre is good for. If I want multiplayer, I'll play Advance Wars, which actually works as a multiplayer game.
Battles huh? I wonder if the strategy part will be online as well..
I wonder if this game will have random battles or not, if there is then we can expect significant power creep for online matches where you'll be fighting full load outs of maxed-out characters. Either way I'll buy it and prolly just ignore the online bit.
I'm just happy they are making a new Fire Emblem game :-)
With Nintendo's Wi-Fi system being what it is, I'm none too impressed by the notion of this. I stil think it'll be cool to finally see what the deal is with Marth's tiara-wearing habits.
Sounds great-with that and Disgaea, maybe more good rpgs will visit the DS. Lets hope!
Those battle sprites are butt-ugly. Haven't devs learned by now that pre-rendered 3d sprites like that never look as good as real hand-drawn 2D? They're lifeless.
Please tell me that's not an actual screenshot. Compared to the amazing GBA sprites that is just plain fugly
btw jim, this info wasn't readily available up until this week but online mp was confirmed when the game was announced -http://serenesforest.net/fe1ds/pre.html. i'm really looking forward to this. i'll be sure to post footage come august on my not-r4.
