Where their new DLC model is concerned, Nintendo is going full steam ahead. Fire Emblem: Awakening, due in Japan on April 19, 2012, will have paid downloadable content. It is the second 3DS game to receive the new Nintendo Network treatment, the first being Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. Sure enough, if you visit the official Japanese site, there is now a Nintendo Network symbol at the bottom of the page. And Marth looks like he's about to stab it.
The news was confirmed by Satoru Iwata during Japan's Nintendo Direct stream this morning. The DLC will include maps and new episodes as a set, with the first set free through May 31. A special Fire Emblem pre-paid card will also be made available. While the game was just confirmed for a late 2012 European release, there has been no news about a North America debut.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Second, I expect Nintendo to handle DLC better than most companies.
It will be really annoying if any of this DLC is available day 1, but THAT is how you do it. Free DLC for a certain period is a great way to reward early adopters, not online fucking passes or outfits that were ripped off the game disk. Free DLC can even be a great way to discourage people from selling their games, but of course only valve is that generous/far sighted.
The first set of dlc will launch with the game, or so I've heard elsewhere.
I do agree that making the dlc free for a limited time is awesome. ^_^
"Marth"
WEEELLLLL, obviously you know nothing about this game! Kidding.
I believe he's supposed to be named Chrome, and he's a Lord in the game. Supposedly.
@HEL105
For some reason I do too, if only because I suspect they'll be super careful with it like they are with everything else. Only this time around, being super careful might mean customers will mean gamers won't be screwed by DLC being worthless or subpar.
So badly
