You've gotten speedy at typing messages to people using your controller, haven't you? Me too. Regardless of how good I get at it though, it'd be a thousand times easier if I could type it out on actual keys. The 360 already has a solution, but until now PS3 owners still had to hunt and peck analog style.
Just announced today, the new Bluetooth-enabled wireless keypad has been announced for both SIXAXIS and DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controllers. These will hit North America in late November (in time for Christmas, yay) and will also come to Japan, Europe and Asia before the end of the year.
Price point has not been confirmed yet, and while the pics above certainly look ready to ship, there is a note indicating that these images are a prototype and could change before the product ships. What I'm saying is, if the final product comes in puke green and is covered with pictures of Hitler, don't blame me. I'm just the messenger.
Full press release can be found after the jump.
Wireless Keypad for PLAYSTATION(R)3 to Be Introduced This Holiday Season Worldwide
Keypad Attaches to SIXAXIS(TM) and DUALSHOCK(R)3 Wireless Controllers
for Quick and Simple Text Input on PS3(R)
TOKYO, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that it would release the Wireless Keypad, a new peripheral for SIXAXIS(TM) and DUALSHOCK(R)3 wireless controllers for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(R)), this holiday season throughout the world. It will be introduced in North America in late November. It will be also introduced in Japan, Europe and Asia by the end of this year.

The highly anticipated Wireless Keypad is designed to fit precisely into the unique shape of SIXAXIS and DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controllers, and can be easily attached or removed. By using the product instead of the on-screen keyboard, users will be able to enjoy text chat communication more easily and comfortably in their hands, just as they would use familiar portable communication devices. It supports text chat in PlayStation(R)Home as well, and enables users to enjoy interactivity playing on-line titles and enjoying entertainment content more smoothly.
Equipped with Bluetooth(R) functionality, the Wireless Keypad can be paired to PS3 by simply connecting the keypad to the USB cable that comes bundled with the PS3 system. Also, two shortcut buttons, a Communication Button and a Message Box Button, are placed on the lower part of the Wireless Keypad, enabling users to jump to pre-set features on XMB(TM) (XrossMediaBar) such as "Friends" and "Message Box" during game play, which help PS3 users to smoothly communicate with each other. Additionally, a Touch Pad Button allows PS3 users to use the entire surface of the keypad as a touch pad, allowing them to easily maneuver the pointer while web browsing, simply by sliding their finger on the keypad surface.
More and more exclusive software titles that will support text chat feature are scheduled for release towards the end of the year including LittleBigPlanet(TM) (SCEI).
SCEI will vigorously promote various measures to introduce new entertainment world that can be further enriched through the network, including PlayStation Home.
Release date and price of this product will be announced later in each region.
If they did this purely to avoid comparison to the 360 pad, then Sony is dumber than I thought.
or are you just talking about a 1st party version? as for the design, blame sony for having to put it through the USB outlet.
And yeah, wrong side, but I'm sure it'll be more comfortable than it looks.
You guys only own 360's so your opions don't matter lol
But anyways it does look uncomfortable. I will buy it though, I hate using the controller to type messages.
quite crap
it makes my thumbs hurt looking at it
ah sweet sweet hitler.
also, un-ergonomic keypad is un-ergonomic.
Instead of having to put down the controller to access a wireless keyboard, now I just have to hold my controller in mind numbingly retarded positions to be reach the keys on the peripheral located above the controller!
=DDD Yayy!
Might suit someone who just sends one word messages containing such words as Cunt, Wanker, Fucker etc over PSN or XBL.. such as I do occasionally to random people.
I simply had to throw it out there as a student of design and usability. This thing is just... just... ugh.
Commence "bottom tip of the 'rang" jokes... now.
lol
"Is it just me or does reaching to the top of a controller with your thumbs NOT sound like the most intuitive/comfortable way to utilize a keyboard made for use with your thumbs?"
QFT
plus it looks hideous.
The way I read it the thing is using wireless cables though some sort of magic called blue teeth. It's also got its own batteries, so it really wouldn't have to use the controller's USB port. I guess the reason they put it above the controller is that there wouldn't be enough space below it to still hold it comfortably. That and the fact that the Japanese have two thumbs on each hand.
At least I hope that's the reason. If Sony chose the location of the pad solely for reasons of avoiding getting sued in the butt by MS they are even dumber than this thing looks.
Silly Sony designers.
Just buy a seperate Sony keyboard and still complain that you can not brwose the web with the ps3 using there own keyboard properaly.
