I suspect that devs have always thought that boobs and graphics sold better than actually talking about the game and the gameplay mechanics. They're wrong... but apparently they don't realize this yet.
Then again, maybe they're not entirely wrong. Look at the sales for Duke Nukem. Lots of T&A and poor gameplay, but it still sells.

Gameplay looks fun, but I got that feeling that the Stylus will count for 75% of fighting, ala Ninja Gaiden DS.

@Elsa-Duke Nukem Forever also had been hyped like what seemed like forever and had the expectation of fans that it would be Duke Nukem 3D but with over 12 years of extra refinement poured into it and it had GearBox at the reigns at the tail end of its development cycle. Who didn't believe that Anthony Burch couldn't save Duke Nukem's world?!
Even if every single woman in the game was replaced by twinks prior its release, it would have done practically identical sales numbers. After that point, either the sales would drop off precipitously or they would spike sharply, depending upon how the game was marketed and to whom or good word of mouth on sites like GayGamer.com.
The sales of the average game that banks on dressing up(or rather dressing down)fighting females into costumes with similar coverage to that of the typical testosterone-tweaked tough guy without any gameplay to back it up unlike the games said tough guys are featured in are nowhere as impressive.

Holmes is obviously mistaking this game for a proper fighting game, this is a fanservice game which just so happens to have fighting in it.

Story is an unimportant surface level detail now? That makes me sad.
Also this game is just advertising the reason people will be buying it, it's not trying to be the next Ocarina of Time or FF7, it's trying to be tits. And it's pretty successful at that I'd say.

@TSP: I'm sorry, I was just talking about the initial marketing, not the game itself. Remember when all that we knew about Catherine essentially boiled down to boobies?
With the 3DS price drop, importing a Japanese 3DS to play this sounds a little more of a possibility.

@kafkaesque-Oh,I don't know. Senran Kagura is indistinguishable from Gravitation which itself is exactly the same as Golgo 13 which you couldn't pick out from a line up with Berserk and X:1999,sort of the way that Bat-Man is the same thing as Omaha the Cat Dancer.

I honestly wouldn't complain if the gameplay suffered because the story was great. How much you like a game depends a lot on how you look at it.
