I'd going to add the "rumor" tag to this story while continuing to remain hopeful.
The folks at RPGfan give us a FFIV release date without even batting an eye. They say that both the DS version of the classic RPG Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Dungeon will hit North American shelves in July, and they give a solid July 8th date for the latter. No source is listed for the FFIV news, but we already knew about Chocobo Dungeon.
Shacknews says that they've contacted Square Enix for confirmation, but haven't heard back yet. They point out that even though the game has not been officially announced for a North American release, it was recently shown in Nintendo Power with English language screenshots.
Let's hope that Square Enix spills the beans soon. This game isn't the kind of game you can make up release dates for, so here's hoping that RPGfan knows what they're talking about.
[Ed's note: Damn, this trailer kicks my ass every time!]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
A japanese language track would be incredible, but im not holding my breath, squenix is no atlus. plus those little ds cards can only hold so much.
Amen and Amen
I never played FF3 on the DS..but I have a lot more memories of playing the fourth game in this lovely series so I am def. buying this when it is released.
Still, i hope that when it's time to remake FFVI, they do it right with serious graphics instead of the superdeformed stuff
@Riegel88
Nah, this is how Square works... DS gets the good remakes and FFTA... and PSP gets Crisis Core and the remake of the really good FFT... Kinda disappointing for those who don't have both really...
I just really, really hope they do a good job with the English voice track (the cart can't hold English and Japanese, and they're not going to make it sub-only for the Japanophiles). However, Squeenix wrangled up fantastic voice casts for Final Fantasy XII and Dragon Quest VIII, so just because it'll be in English doesn't mean all hope is lost, y'all.
And I'd like to echo the call for Dragon Quest IV, though; I'd really like to get the trilogy to hit NA shores. Maybe they'll use Dragon Quest IX as a measuring stick, and bring the three games over depending on how well IX sells?
In any case, I think we can agree that the DS is the undisputed RPG king of the seventh-generation game systems.
Make something new please.
It came out in Japan 7 fucking months ago!
It doesn't take that long to localize these games. Run that shit through Babel Fish and be done with it. It's not as though we're playing FFTA2 for the story.
You do know that FFTA2 has an official release date of late June right? Looks like I'll be getting that and FFIV too. IV is my favorite 2D FF game.
Theme of growing up and accepting maturity in the real world > Overcomplicated bullshit with too many characters trying to sound smart

Also says Disgaea DS comes out in July but also claims FFTA2 is TBA? Strange considering this is supposed to be the official Nintendo magazine in the US.....oh well, I'll take their word for it for now.

I like the superdeformed style, if only because it still fits on the portable and nods well to the old sprite style. Cut scene look great for those pivotal moments, but i think taking the whole game to real proportion characters would wreck the experience for me.
FF is at its best when its got a nice amount of cute, and if it has to overcome a technical limitation to convey its story.
FF3 DS was horrible, easily the worst FF I have ever played and a terrible RPG on its own.
And prerendered Rydia?
This is a game that needs to be 100% remade on 360 or PStriple.
I'm really looking forward to it though, and I think someday I'll even play the FFC version of it just for the hell of it.
@Kyousuke Nanbu
Hm, I really liked FF III. Certainly far from being the best FF game, but was fun enough for me. Not sure what you were expecting though given that it was based on a NES game. Don't think they really added much to the plot or anything either. For me it's at least better than FF II, possibly even I.
i'll probably play it again though.
wow i suck at timing
Dragoon to Paladin transformation is awesome!

Nintendo Power claims TBA so they're a little behind
But I can hope for a july release right? ^_^
I guess this means I'm finally gonna have to bring myself to beat FFIII. Damn that last boss.
Don't suppose there's any rumors on a EU release?
