Rejoice! Rejoice, for at last, there is a reason to buy the PlayStation Portable. And no, it doesn't involve UMD, PlayStation 3, XMB, Wi-fi or any of that other crap. Ironically enough, it doesn't even involve Sony.
PSP News at DCEmu brings us the following news of a PSOne emulator for the PSP. One which doesn't require you to spend $599 on that "accessory", the PS3:
After the disapointing PS1 Emulator release by Sony which requires you to have a PS3 heres some better news.
Tonight Finally is the release time of PS1P the PlayStation Emulator for the PSP - AN Exclusive for the PSP News site at DCEmu. Its been a long wait but our friend Anonymous Coder has now agreed to release the first Alpha of his Playstation Emulator for the PSP.
This release was to be a Single Game release but AC contacted me today and changed his mind so thats great for you all, heres what he emailed me:
The wait is worth it. I'm releasing a version that will run anything. ISO, BIN, Z and ZNX.
The rest you know. scph1001.bin and images in the __SCE__ps1p directory.
This version has some compatibility problems which I plan to fix soon, for example the FF7 intro movie doesn't run. You can play the game though, just get past the intro using a standard PC emulator (PCSX, ePSXe, ...) and copy over the memory card file ( mcd001.mcr or mcd002.mcr).
Use L+R+ up/down to tweak the CPU timing.
I think L2 and R2 aren't working at the moment too.

Argh, f**k it. You know what? Go download the damned thing and send the nice man who made it a lengthy e-mail telling him how much you love it.
I'll give it a try. Is a particular version needed? I foolishly updated my firmware...
Of course, the first PS1 emulator on a handheld was on the GP2X, because the development kit was available to the public from the start, and the developer of that emulator makes it run without any OS at all.
As for this, well I think you're pretty much screwed if you have updated to 3.x right now, but if you have anything up to 2.81 you can downgrade it to 1.5 and then use devhook to play your UMDs that require updated firmware. Therefore you get the best of both worlds and Sony can shove their PS3 requirement right up their...
That's pretty good considering its Alpha 1.
Finally a reason to take my psp out of it's fabriccy condom. Awesome, awesome news.
