Final format of Wii U to be shown at E3 2012 photo

In all of the talk over the issues Nintendo has faced over the last two quarters in pushing product for their current devices, very little was said about their upcoming Wii U. A small note was made regarding the console at the tail end of Iwata's presentation to investors, stating that the company would be demonstrating the "final format" of Wii U at next year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Presumably to allay any investor concerns over how the 3DS launch was handled, Iwata made no bones about it. He said the company "learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS," and assured that the proper measures would be taken to prevent any repeat issues. Ouch.

Youd think companies would learn about launches by now. I can only count MAYBE 3 good launches in all of gaming history

Well of course they should show further detail after the bare bit of information we got this year. Regardless I can't wait.

Well, the first step to recovery is admitting you screwed up. Nintendo has admitted that, so let's see some recovery!

The 3ds recovery already happened. It happened the second, they dropped the price to what it should of been and it clipped ds sales for the same time frame.

@Stealth: Well if so then that's great, especially as I love Nintendo's portables, but I was mainly referring to their consoles. Nintendo's going to have to definitely let their actions speak in that regard.

The wii sold more than any console did this gen. Its at the end of its life, sales are decreasing. They were pretty much in the same position last year, when the wii single handedly outsold every other console 2-1 during the holidays and took the year. Thats probably not going to happen this year which is why its a good thing the wii u is next year.

Because the wii U is BC with all wii games, once it comes out, the wii will be nothing more than a memory, hanging around because of dragon quest X ( which will move systems)

People get too stuck with sale charts, selling the most doesn't mean it's the best, it just reach a wider audience thus it sells to people that the other consoles can't reach.

Correct me if I'm wrong, since I haven't been alive long enough to remember each individual launch. . .but when has ANY Nintendo launch been a spectacular, stellar performance? I would guess anything from the N64 on back simply because of the lack of Sony competition, but it's not something I actually remember or recall off the top of my head.

let me guess. mini blue-ray discs. or going back to cartridges? cause that would bring all the nintendo fan boys clamoring for the wii-u.

You would call the launch of the Wii being completely out of stock in two years straight a non-spectacular launch? It was an absolutely magnificent launch, I believe that even better than the NES.

learned which lesson exactly?

Pricing?
Release lineup?
Unfinished hardware? (see #nubageddon)

If I were an investor blank statements such as "learned our lesson" wouldn't do well to smooth me over.

November will be the 3DS's field day. This holiday season decides it all. SML3D, MK7, Sonic Generations, and Mario & Sonic are guaranteed sellers.

As for the WiiU.....JUST MAKE THE CONTROLLER LOOK LIKE THE DREAMCAST CONTROLLER, DAMMIT. MAKE THE SCREENN ABOUT AN INCH BIGGER, THEN WE'D BE ABLE TO DO STUFF! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I think making sure the hardware is adequate is the very basic to expect.
what nintendo really need to work on is making sure there are games being released for it. nintendo consoles have been abysmal in terms of release schedule. what big games have been released for the nintendo console this time around? I can probably count on one hand. that is pathetic. so they really need to MAKE SURE they are getting developers working on games for it. gamecube ws a catastrophic failure for me because there were no games for it. wii has been pretty much the same really, I only bought this one second hand. at the end of its life you'd expect there to be a rich tapestry of games to choose from. pah. there are only maybe 3 games in my local store that look good. epic mickey and metroid M.
I need to see some decent releases for the Wii U before i even consider a purchase.

I don't know why gamers are so bitchy about Nintendo nowadays. Oh yeah, because there's a new generation of young drugged up brain washed kids that have no clue about anything.

I hope by final format they're actually going to change the appearance of the Wii U console. I think the tablet controller looks fine (but would be nicer in black), but the console looks like a Wii with filed off corners. I'm not really hyped for the Wii-U yet, as it's too much of an unknown quantity, and I want to hear about 3rd party support, exclusives and what their online service will be like.

It was a nice way of saying to investors that Nintendo isn't going to let investors push Wii U out too early like 3DS.

Now if only Sony would delay the woefully incomplete Vita and resolve its storage and save issues.

You know, I kind of believe him about the Wii U launch.

The thing is, people are STILL making games for the DS. More quality games have come out for the DS than for the 3DS in the last few months. Yes, I know you can play them on the 3DS, but it doesn't exactly force people to upgrade. DS sales crushed 3DS sales before the price drop.

With the Wii, though, other than Zelda, people stopped making any games of any real significance awhile ago. I can only assume that developers have been spending time and budget once reserved for the Wii on the Wii U.

God, I hate that name.

The point is, though, that the Wii won't be cannibalizing sales or developer resources from the Wii U the way the DS did from the 3DS. I think the games will be there. That just leaves it up to Nintendo to come through with the hardware.

Part of me is sad that I won't be able to play Pikmin 3 anytime soon because of that, but at the same time it's better for them to take their time instead of rushing the launch like the 3DS's.

My dream conference? Iwata walks out, throws the Wii U in a garbage can, and says they are going to publish their content on other platforms. I still love Nintendo games, but the hardware experience has just become so shoddy in comparison that I don't think they have a clue.

I cannot wait to see the Wii U in all of its complete glory.

Nintendo need to make sure they have a big launch game this time, if there's anything more sure than the quality and inevitable success of a big Nintendo game in the games industry I don't know what it is.

The 3DS still doesn't have its killer app yet which was MEANT to be Kid Icarus (and Mario of course), but that should change soon enough.

“People get too stuck with sale charts, selling the most doesn't mean it's the best, it just reach a wider audience thus it sells to people that the other consoles can't reach.”

I get a kick out of people who now say, that sales don't matter. Sure its not the be all, end all of how good a console is. But people voting with their dollars still counts and almost 90 million people voted for the Wii this generation, as comparable to only 50 million, or so for the PS3 and 360.

Console sales determine a winner of every generation up until this one, where people seem to think that all of a sudden sales don't matter anymore, just because Nintendo won on the sales front. Sales matter, they always have and they always will. As for the Wii U not being shown again until E3 2012, I say fine, great. Its good that Nintendo is not going to rush it. They learn their lesson with the 3DS launch, so don't rush out a console just to meet investors demands. Release a systems for the costumers demands!

@Deth Garcia,
why? Wii U has specs that can put to shame even current PC's and with much larger and faster disc format than even ps3 we could get awesome title. THQ guys already said that Nintendo not only wants better looking games, but with unique and exclusive content.
Arkham City with all of the DLC on a disc, graphics of high-end PC and additional content exclusive to Wii U? i would buy that and i already have Arkham City on xbox360.

While multi-touch is cool, it's not appropriate for the Wii-U pad if it means it can't use a stylus (or has to use a battery powered stylus which still isn't as accurate). Multi-touch is very good for tablets that don't have access to a full button set to keep their design slim. The Wii U controller, however, does have access to a full button set. So in this case, accuracy is more important than number of buttons.

What would be cool is if they used those new resistive multi-touch screens so that they could have both, but I doubt they would.

@TheNephilym,
guys who work on Wii U versions of Metro and Darksiders 2 admitted that any game from HD consoles can be ported to Wii U and will run in native 1080p and over 60fps and that when they ported their games from PC it took them only few weeks to make it run as good as on PC(they said near or on par Maximum settings on PC).
so yeah, when 300-400$ console can do what 1200-1500$ PCs can i would say it puts them to shame.

the same guy said that it took them literally one line of code to make touch screen fully compatible with Darksiders 2.

Just got this gut feeling that this will be Nintendo's Dreamcast, yeah it's got it's cute little screen but it just seems like a gimmick to me, oh and they're sticking with the Wii name? Didn't they learn anything from the 3DS? It causes confusion with peeps and parents who aren't in the know and couldn't care less.

Yeah, I'm rolling with the bandwagon on this one. I reckon it's not going to do well.

The biggest thing they need to fix is the console itself. Designing it to look almost exactly the same as the original Wii is just going to confuse the vast majority of Wii owners (i.e. Non-gamers). Many are already going to be wondering why they can't just buy the new controller for their old Wii. When they see they've gotta pay $300+ for what looks to be the same system, it's just going to piss them off.

I think the 3DS suffered for the same reason. $250 is a lot to shell out for something you just saw your kid playing with 5 minutes ago. Why does he need a teal one??

You deluded little rascal you. Did you even read your own fucking source? This mystery person said NOTHING about the Wii U in comparison to the PC. He only said that it is better than the current systems. Which is to be expected, and frankly, shouldn't be hard to do. All he really said about the PC was that if you want the definitive version of a game, you either get the PC version or the Wii U version. Seeing as the Wii U will be the newest console on the market and the PC's capabilities are ever evolving, that should go without saying.

Also, from the full version of that interview:

"Well I would expect the PC versions to be graphically superior over the console versions. And I'm sure the Wii U versions of Darksiders 2 and Metro Last Light will be superior to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions."

So...

So Christmas 2012 release most likely, then? Nintendo really needed to release the U at the end of this year, coming off the awesome end to Wii's 2010 (DK, GoldenEye and the like) and with Zelda as its swansong. Now Wii owners will have had two barren years (let's face it, Nintendo only care about 3DS and Wii U now) to endure ahead of the new console's release - not exactly going to stoke much excitement among possible consumers, or to prove the company's credentials as a serious alternative to 360 or PS3. Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft will be toiling away on new hardware, reducing Nintendo's lead with every month that passes.

What lesson would that be? Seems like there were a slew of things wrong with the 3DS launch, most notably that it was announced right around the time when the DSiXL came out (which also didn't sell very well). Retracting and downplaying the 3D elements backfired because it was then assumed that Nintendo had no confidence in their own technology.
