Final Fantasy XIV revealed for Xbox 360, PC photo

Though only officially announced for the PlayStation 3, fresh Intel has arrived indicating that Final Fantasy XIV is also in development for the Xbox 360 and PC. The information comes by way of a cheeky Square Enix employee who accidentally let the word slip on his LinkedIn resume.

The resume, bold as brass, states that Final Fantasy XIV is for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It was already expected that the game would eventually cross over to other systems, so it's not very hard to imagine. Even so, this is probably not the way Square Enix would have liked to announce it.

Final Fantasy XIV was first revealed at Sony's 2009 E3 press conference. A spiritual successor to Final Fantasy XI, it will be Square Enix's latest attempt to crack the MMO market. Maybe it'll work this time?

"Maybe it'll work this time?"

I don't understand this question. Are you suggesting that Final Fantasy XI wasn't a complete success? Because it definitely was.

On the 360? Oh boy, I can't wait to pay for Live Gold AND an FF14 subscription just to play!

@ Birdman

You don't need gold to play FFXI on 360, so why will this require you to pay?

Wasn't this known several months back when Square Enix commented on Xbox Live's ridiculous quality measures and how said measures were a complete pain in the ass and could very well hold back the 360 version? The PC version was also mentioned earlier too.

I seem to remember reading that (here, in fact). I thought everyone knew by now this was multiplatform and no one cared.

True, but weren't PS3 fanboys shouting "MEGATON OMFGBBQ" when it was announced? Hell, I still see people gloating about it on fanboy infested sites like VGchartz and GAF.

Infamy is right, FFXI and PSU allow you to play with a silver membership while paying the subscription fee. In fact, any MMO will do that, since MMO's run off their own servers. Xbox Live has absolutely nothing to do with them.

unfortunately LinkedIn profiles are not always legit. A buddy of mine filled out everything to make it look like he worked for MS and made his profile private and never added any friends. They dont check for fake profiles... but that will be funny if it IS real.

@able_to_think It never was an exclusive. Even when announced they later said that it was going to to have a simultaneous launch for the pc and that they were considering all options, which meant the 360. They even mention saying that it wasn't a console exclusive and could end up on the 360. If anybody is surprised by this news, they shouldn't be.

@shadowjin: The only thing to comment back towards that is that this game not being multiplatform would only hurt square enix.

And if it WAS fake, someone would have done this long ago. Point is they said shortly after it was announced at E3 that some legal BS with microsoft was what kept them from making an official announcement.

That aside, this is very good news to me. Hopefully though it'll be a console wide launch so my friend and I can play the game from the get go.

If they go with the monthly fee model I really can't see it working. Anyone who owns a console will generally want to play a variety of games - not just one game. Who wants to pay a fee for a game they may not even play that month if another big release they want to play comes out?

Meh... I think they could be hugely successful if they go to another more flexible income system.
(not to mention that people can play a massive game like MAG on the PS3 for years for FREE... why don't they just charge $100 for the game and have free servers or something?)

I think a lot of people just didn't care. Like myself. A console exclusive MMO is silly.

@Elsa
I respectfully disagree. Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast and FFXI on 360 both had fees on top of fees and were successful. Especially with PS3 users being, arguably, where the real FF fanbase is AND being free I can't imagine those guys complaining. That seems a tad bit spoiled to be honest.

Also, if you're buying an MMO and don't plan on playing it regularly you're just being silly.

That's because you're a gamer, or a fan. Or both. Not a fanboy. You can't deny how fanboys have been acting, even though this is only an MMO.

PSO (at least, Ver 1) on Dreamcast was free to play. They didn't charge until the Xbox/PS2/GC versions. I played PSO for hours upon hours, before I was old enough to know what a credit card was, or a job for that matter.

Although my constant tying of the phone line lead to some angry mother issues.

I'd understand if XIII Versus came to the 360, but XIV? Does anyone really even care? I don't even know why that's being developed for the PS3 in the first place. It only makes perfect sense for the PC release. MMO's belong to the PC demographic, this game won't sell for console gamers; prove me wrong.

The best the playstation can do is a timed exclusive. It doesn't make much sense (economical) for third parties to be exclusive, especially in an economy where video game sales are relatively down. Anyways, Im probably just talking out of my ass, I don't have any economic degree.

Is everyone forgetting that Squenix came right out and said, "We like developing for 360."

Remember? Back when people still cared about Last Remnant coming to PS3?

They liked it so much they developed several RPGs, none of which were good. But they enjoyed it, apparently.

FFXI already proved you wrong. The reason this will do well on consoles is because there is a large demographic of MMO/FF addicts who only have shit laptops/desktops that won't even come to close to being able to run FFXIV. Hell to this day FFXI still has tons of users who still play on their PS2's.

Man, I love the ignorance of people who still claim MMOs belong on PC... regardless of the fact that Square Enix has been running a very successful console MMORPG for 8 years now.

It's not a PvP MMO, it's a cooperative PvE MMO and it supports input device you prefer to use. My preference is Controller/Keyboard even on PC. If they implement VoIP as they should, there's really no need for the keyboard at all anymore.

Anyway, we've all been aware it will come to Xbox. More people the better. Probably March-June 2011.

Perhaps. I didn't pay too close attention to the fanhoys or really the reaction overall when they announced FFXIV. I kind of shrugged it off as another PS3 game I'll own when the PS4 comes out.

Two bits of info for you Mr. Sterling. One SE already said at an earlier time that they had planned to release it for 360 just not at launch. They said at some point that they had to work out something with Microsoft because like all other games Microsoft wants its piece of the pie, apparently this good bit of news means they have come to an agreement of sorts. Second bit of info was, FFXI was a pretty big success, ofcourse is doesnt stand up to WoW as far as subscriptions but it is a still played and is still holding its own in the MMO market, even though I shall admit over the past 2 years or so it has seen a steady decline of players, and I expect it to see a major decline when FFXIV comes out.

Oh ya I forgot to mention the fact that it was designed for PC instead of the PS this time around. Everyone already knew it was coming for PC and PS3 at launch. 360 is supposed to get in on the game at a later period.

The main issue was MS wants people to pay for XBL fee + the FF14 monthly fee. SE doesn't like this so therefor they kept pushing MS to do something about it.

Either case it is better to play it on PC or PS3 to at least secure you can play without fee's or fear of getting RROD. But if you have no choice then congrats, you can play it on the 360 and that means more people can play the game :)

Oh no, it seems raging PS3 fanfag Carlton is late to the scene!

So a PS3 fansite showing 2 PS3 codes has credibility, but a SE employee who's actual RESUME has Xbox 360 on it, Jack's shaky carefully worded words at E3 and Square stating they're in talks with Microsoft about a 360 version isn't credible?

@Shin Oni: The clip did not say 360 will not be getting this title period, they for the time being, meaning at launch 360 isn't going to get a port of the game. I follow the game devoutly, So trust me on this one. There were plans from the beginning to bring it to 360 at a later date, Sony paid for Release exclusiveness to give them an edge, I know a lot of people from FFXI who said they are buying a PS3 just to play this game.

Senior VP Shinji Hashimoto stated that the company is "considering all options" for platforms, and noted specifically that Microsoft hardware is a possibility.
