Final Fantasy XIV news: New religion, surnames, soundtrack photo

Several Final Fantasy XIV tidbits have floated up to the top. It's kind of like shabu-shabu. We've skimmed them off of VG247 for you, like you would the foamy scum:

First off, the upcoming PS3 and PC Square Enix MMO will have it's own religion. Meditate on that. Game producer Hiromichi Tanaka said “It will have its own religion. It’ll be a really unique type of world.”  He hints that it will have both medieval and sci-fi elements, so you won't be able to call it a game that takes place in the past or future. Weird.

Surnames will be introduced to help people make the transition from Final Fantasy XI to this new title: “We’re trying to find a way so people can transfer their names to FFXIV," said Tanaka. "However, for FFXI we had 32 worlds, and each character had to have a unique name in each world, so if they move to XIV there might be a conflict, so what we’re trying to introduce is surnames for the characters so people can keep their original names but add something else to it to make it more unique.”

Finally, everyone is pleased that series composer Nobuo Uematsu is coming back for a new score for this game, his first full score since Final Fantasy IX.  Tanaka: “As he’s very busy, we didn’t expect him to do all of the music for FFXIV, but this time he kindly suggested that he would take care of the whole [score].”

I like the sound of bringing more sci-fi elements in... one of the cooler parts of Final Fantasy has always been the mixing of technology and sci-fi into a more traditional fantasy setting. Well, one of the cooler parts of the later games, anyway. The steampunk vibe of FF6 was also cool.

That said, I have very little interest in MMOs due to he monthly fees. If this one goes DLC supported, I will get it, but otherwise... no thanks.

I think I just got a little upset. Surnames in MMOs never sat well with me.

So, what? All your characters have the same Surname, but a different first name depending on the world they are in?

Also, unless the religion is tied to the story, then I don't care for it.

well...maybe they can make a real FF mmo, this time around...not saying that FFXI wasn't a good MMO, it's just that it didn't feel FF enough...

It felt pretty FF to me... All of the jobs were consistent with the FF universe and well-implemented for the most part, although Puppetmaster was a bit odd. The setting was strictly medieval, but so was FFIX.

Many of the iconic FF staples were there: Moogles, chocobos (and yes, the chocobo tune), airships. All of the spells, all of the items. Hell, even a lot of the mobs are consistent with the FF universe. I even fought Cactrot Rapido, and yes 10,000 needles hurts; a lot.

@Ghil

Um.. FFXI was more FF than FFVI-FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2 & FFXII.
