Final Fantasy XIV beta to be Windows-only at first photo

Square-Enix is planning to release a non-traditional beta for Final Fantasy XIV, but the PS3 version isn’t set to be the pilot platform. In an interview with GameWatch (spotted by RPG Site), game producer Hiromichi Tanaka revealed that Windows was to be the platform of choice for an unusual beta.  According to RPG Site, the beta won’t be constant -- instead, play time is to be constricted to hourly chunks. In addition to this, the amount of people let in to the beta may be small.

The platform choice isn’t as odd as it seems. The article points out that the lead platform for FFXIV is the PC. That version will be ported to the PS3.

Chances are that Square-Enix may change its beta-tune closer to release. From what we understand, PC-to-PS3 ports aren’t the easiest things to do. It would be bad beans if the MMO launched on the PS3 crippled.

it would be pretty rad to try the beta, I already subscribed for it. I am not the biggest Final Fantasy fan, but the MMO for it seems like a great experience to try.

PC to PS3? All PS3 dev kits are on a PC. You didn't know that? I think you mean to say PC/Xbox to PS3 doesn't work to well. Xbox360 and PC are nearly the samething they both work off the same general code. I think they are doing it right to get the best out of the PS3 you need to do the higher form of medium first, which would be PC. Plus the development time is better spend on the varieties of PCs rather than one form factor(PS3). This way when they go to bring it to PS3 it has a higher bar to reach up to. Instead of going from the lowest, up. Which is why it's better to develop on PS3 first and come down or in this case the higher medium would be PC.

I guess this seems like obvious news.. why wouldn't the beta be Windows only at first? Seems like a bit of a no-brainer there.

Hate to say it, too.. but I don't see the relevance between this and that article about Valve not wanting to port things to PS3.

Um yeah, all PS3 code is developed on PC's, most likely in tandem with a PC version, only problem comes when a system has already been created for another platform and needs butchering to make it fit into/onto the esoteric PS3 hardware.

Everybody shut up and just glorify Brad's body. That is all that matters here right now.

Well, it will only start with testing on the PC. According to the translated article reprinted at ffxivcitadel.com, the game testing will take the following phases: Initial testing (hourly chunks mentioned by the OP), 24/7 tests, stress testing, open beta (possibly where PS3 testing will start), then release. The Game Watch interviewer guessed the release would happen sometime next summer, but that would put FFXIV before FFXIII!

Same as what happened with FFXI isn't it? Who would want to play this on a console anyhow. All the player-developed mods will be on PC, and if the people responsible for FFXI's UI are working on this one... we're going to need those mods.

Not surprised, like others said, why would you play it on a console? Well except for the hardware requirements. BLUE RAY!!!! Oh wait, computers have those already.

Not surprised entirely but I am disappointed.

@the people saying ps3 dev kits are on PC.
I've seen interviews with people making ps3 games on a ps3, with all the data legwork being done on PCs around the offices. Like MGS4 and Last Guardian I think, they were tweaking the light levels and textures and all that stuff with a ps3 controller.

It could have been they were only doing that as they were playing a raw version of the game on ps3 to see how it felt as a whole experience though. idk

Thanks for update Brad, but it's missing some facts. Here is what Zam.com unearthed.

"Beta testing will begin for Windows PCs only. They will be conducted as focus groups that last around 3-4 hours at a time. This will be to iron out every little detail of the game utilizing player feedback. The next stage will be weekly tests that last a full 24 hours. After this, they will begin to stress test the servers by adding people in increments - they will start at 10,000 and double the amount for each subsequent test. Finally, after expanding the pool of testers to their liking, a full open beta will be initiated."

Beta testing this way is a bad idea. As a case in point, the last MMO I know of to have short beta periods of hours or days at most was Champions Online.

You left out some of the important facts. I will give you the post and link here.

The Beta
Can you believe it? GAME Watch got actual information about beta testing! The first round of beta testing will be done with a relatively small group and be conducted worldwide. It won’t be a continuously running beta test but broken down into small 3 or 4 hour tests held at different times. They plan on doing very detailed testing on FFXIV so users will see how the game develops over time. At the beginning, tests will only be conducted with the Windows version. From the initial 3 or 4 hour tests they will expand to daily or weekly beta tests that run for 24 hours a day. After that comes stress tests which will require a lot of people. Tanaka says it could start with 10 thousand people and go up from there to 20, 40, and 80 thousand people. Finally, there will be a free open beta. Originally he thought it would take half a year to go from a development build to the open beta, but he now thinks it will be shorter than that. The interviewer guesses at a summer release based on that and Tanaka says it all depends on the feedback they get from players during the beta testing. It doesn’t sound like the development build he is referring to is the same demo shown at gamescom. He says whether or not a development build is made by year’s end will depend on the developers.
