Hot off the heels of id announcing that Rage may need two discs for the Xbox 360, here comes Square Enix with an even bigger problem. There's just too much Final Fantasy XIII for one DVD, or even two DVDs, with Yoshinori Kitase "aiming" to squeeze the game onto three.
"This is not the final count as we’re still working on it, but we’re aiming for about three discs for the Xbox 360 version," explains the producer. The PS3 fanboys are going to have a field day with this one, since apparently multiple discs is the hallmark of an inferior product. Despite this, Kitase wants to assure gamers that neither version will be better than the other.
"The 360 version and the PS3 version should be pretty much equal, both in terms of content and the visuals as well," he says, hoping to appease the wrath of the console loyalists. "Since the hardware is different, there might be some subtle differences if you compare screenshots side by side, but the team’s being very careful about the compression of the data and the visuals, so that it’s exactly the same on both."
I really don't see the big deal about multiple DVDs. It's not like my Xbox 360 is sat at one end of a giant Viking banquet hall that I'd have to traverse in order to swap discs. However, I'm not a twelve-year-old retard, so I can see how some people consider this a huge deal and a massive "victory" for the PS3 version. They will be dancing in the streets like those villagers did the morning after 9/11, once word of this chicanery spreads.
Personally, I'll be choosing the PS3 version, because I can't deal with playing a Final Fantasy game on a non-Sony/Nintendo system yet.
I don't mind it that much. I mean, Blue Dragon had 4 discs, which initially frightened me. But spanning a game across two or more discs hasn't ever really bothered me that much.
I remember when I was renting it from blockbuster, and the dude said : " ya'know, if you had the sense to get a ps3, this would only be on one disk"
After that, I just asked if I could pre-order Gears Of War 2, and that seemed to shut him up.
As for the multiple disc thing... it doesn't matter to gamers. But companies are to start to dislike paying to produce more discs (no matter how little it costs multiplying it by 2,000,000 makes it expensive).
I smell a massive problem.
(I'm being serious)
personally, the act of being asked to swap is like a landmark for me in a 40+ hr game. gives you a sense of progress.
overall, whether this is on 1 disc or 3, it's a non-issue
Meh, I'll still likey get a PS3 to paly it over a 360, but this has no affect on that decision, Fat Princess is what has an affect on that decision.
On the one hand it's beautiful to see so many share the common consensus of "Who gives a fuck?" On the other there seems to be a lot of people just expecting the section to go up in flames and assuming a shitstorm. Have a little faith!
I JUST KNOW IT!
I haven't seen any Sony fanboy do such a thing. In fact I, an obvious Sony fanboy, said it didn't matter... but I still won't believe the "it looks the same".
I just hope they will be packed better than Lost Odyssey's hobo inc. style.
Which is a PS3.
I'm actually a little bummed about not having to switch discs, honestly. I like that retro feeling. Can we at least have 5 minute loading screens where 360 players would have to switch discs? Maybe in the form of an... install?
but 360 cases are SHIT at housing multiple discs....
I demand Final Fantasy XIII on Commodore 64 Cassette Tapes!
Wheres the non avatar trolls with their incoherent fanboyism? Wheres the red ring jokes? WHERES SEXUALCHOCOLATE?
I'm disappointed.
BLASPHEMY! That stuff was brilliant.
Game Over. Microsoft wins.
Doesn't it usually have to end up being on more discs/blu-ray because of the high-def cutscenes, not the actual in-game graphics? I believe that's what was said with why Resistance could "only" be done on Blu-Ray, when the graphics were just as good as, say, Gears of War.
Which, if it's just because of the cutscenes, the quality should be the same on both systems.
But don't worry, SexualChocolate will be here soon enough to set me straight.
Next thing you'll tell me is that I have to patch the firmware and software manually prior to playing instead of it being streamed silently in the background.
Both are trivial (unless you don't have a decent hard drive for the PS3) and both don't ruin the gaming experience at all.
A minute or two here or there in the span of a huge game is just god telling you to go pee and eat a sandwich.
This is a bad thing, give me another 3 hour "singleplayer" game please.
