Final Fantasy XIII will sell more on 360 than PS3? photo

According to a UK consumer site, Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled to sell more copies on the Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3. Popular site MyVoucherCodes has revealed that it received more than 250,000 unique searches for the 360 version of XIII, compared to 120,000 searches for the PS3 variant during February.

If consumer interest is indicative of final sales, that would mean Final Fantasy will sell more than twice as well on the Xbox 360. MyVoucherCodes certainly seems to believe that Microsoft will win one of the most hotly contested and bitter battlegrounds in the current-gen console war.

"The Final Fantasy series has always been a huge draw for Sony, since its debut on the PlayStation in the form of Final Fantasy VII," says managing director Mark Pearson. "For Microsoft to now be sharing and in fact beating the interest for the PS3 version must be worrying Sony chiefs, who must be wondering just how to steal the march back, if it is at all possible. Our Christmas sales data showed that Xbox 360s were outselling PlayStation 3s three to one in the holiday period, a fact which seems to be presenting itself here as consumers show more interest in the Xbox 360 title."

Final Fantasy XIII is a catalyst for fanboy flamewars and console resentment, and you can guarantee that a lot of people will stake their personal pride on how well this game sells on their platform of choice. Such behavior is insane, but that's the way of the world. It's going to be very interesting to see the fallout from this game once it releases.

Who cares, it's not another Chrono game so it's worthless.

More 360's sold = Bigger Market for 360 copies.

This is almost common sense.

Was going to get it on the PS3, but since my console just bricked last night, looks like the 360 it is! Very clever Microsoft....very clever....

Well, every time I see Fantasy VII mentioned in an article I feel the need to complain about them not working on a HD remake of VII. That said, it will be interesting to see how many more copies the 360 does indeed sell more of.

More 360s sold does not mean more FF13 copies sold, not automatically. Usually it does, but then again look at Batman: Arkham Asylum, a game that sold better on PS3 due to exclusive content. If fans of the series are truly more rooted in the PS3 brand and the graphics truly are superior, I'm sure it will sell more on PS3.

But I could just as easily see the 360 version outselling the PS3 version. Which would be so worth it just for the fanboy wars.

@DeathsVice: Are you sure it bricked? There are a lot of weird things happening to the older fat PS3's due to the Sony network being hosed.

I'd say the amazon sales rank would be slightly more indicative since they actually sell the game. Seeing as amazon has had the ps3 version in the top 3 for a while now and the 360 version hasn't been in the top 10 until recently , I'd say the ps3 version may have the slight edge. I know I have it preordered for ps3.

more 360s in the UK ?

Surely that's the reason

I mean the ps3 version is the better option if you have both consoles. Not by a huge amount but still. Can't quite imagine anyone picking it up for 360 over ps3.

I'd be surprised. In Europe, PS3 and 360 are almost toe-to-toe. I don't see why someone who owns both consoles would want the 360 version.
The US are a different story, with their widespread 360 dominance.

I'm not buying the game until I finish Final Fantasy VIII on PSN. And then, I'll be getting XIII for Playstation.

Not that the two versions will be any different. At all.

Quite right. However, in an article about potential sales, More 360's in circulation is definitely a valid point.

360 has the CE exclusively in USA too, right? If so, Game Set Match most likely.

Most people I know who are long time FF fans are getting the PS3 version if they can purely for sentimental reasons. Either that or they feel they have to because they bought the system for the game years ago. I'm getting it on the PS3 for the latter reason, the single disc thing is a bonus because I'm lazy.

When companies compete you win. Sound familiar? It's the law of economics. While my preferences lean to the PS3, I am not a "one vs. the other" type of gamer. Each system has its vices and virtues. Bottom line: it is better to have two systems battling each other for our dollars than one system that has no competition and thus no incentive to push the envelope in order to attract buyers.

The PS3 (IM-not-so-HO) is my preference because of interface, free online (which we all know is going away sooner or later) and historical precedent (I owned a PS One and a PS 2, never was an Xbox fan). But I still intend to one day own a 360. There are too many awesome console-exclusive titles to not want to own both. I include the Wii in this as well.

As far as the Final Fantasy franchise is concerned, GTA made its way onto the Xbox and that doesn't spell doom necessarily. Besides, people who bought the Xbox Arcade because of short term price incentives will feel the burn eventually as gaming moves on and the PS3 proves to be the more resilient (in terms of hardware) of the systems. It was the same with PS2 and Xbox. Sony is still raking in cash on the PS2, a system that is worth hanging on to, where as the original Xbox has become obsolete.

I'm surprised to find this here on Dtoid really am, I find the information to be some what suspect. I've never even heard of MyVoucherCodes until now. I'm guessing this story was ran because it's flamebait material, I notice Jim is behind it as well. I mean according to place who ACTUALLY sell games, like Amazon.com the PS3 version has been #1 for 73 days in a row, and the Xbox360 version isn't even in the top ten list.

Really all it proves is that Xbox360 players are cheapsakes.

While I'll be getting the PS3 version (lead platform), the inferior version of Bayonetta sold more in Japan. Wouldn't surprise me that much if that happened with this. But it all comes down to those that aren't completely informed enough to choose what they feel is the right decision.

A PS3 can brick by switching it on. YLOD.
Or by putting a disk in the drive, the System can have read errors and brick.

like wise.

A 360 can brick by switching it on. RROD.
And a PC can have BIOS corruption and brick.

Nothing is brick proof, and you do not have "mess with it".

Something that affects the System Operating System is the most surefire way to break something. Which is why people go to lengths to avoid PC viruses.

I don't buy this reasoning at all. The number of FF13 searches for the 360 simply indicates that 360 owners are interested in learning more about this franchise. PS3 owners are fully aware of it's existence and release date. Like many other PS3 owners (I own a 360 as well, MassEffect2 = awesome!) I pre-ordered the PS3 version months and months ago. No need to do a search to learn about the game, I'm fully aware of it's existence and release date. In fact FF13 was one of two reasons why I purchased a PS3, the other being GOW3.

I reckon 360 will take, but for one reason, and that's achievements. It might seem trivial to some, but achievements play a vital part in every 360 game sale, a luxury which the original Xbox didn't have to exploit. Either way, it'll be a nice win win for Square.

@Jesse

I think MS will look to have 360 be a long tail, as PS2 has previously done, when they are ready to move to 720 or whatever. Live through it is more robust and user friendly than the original, and with much game available for DL, plus tv stuff, slap a 120gb hard drive onto it and you are good to go. A 360 can be picked up cheaper than Wii now, so by the end of this cycle, you might be able to get one for as cheap of £60/$70.

@Aurain You can't brick a PC with a virus, unless it's a 0 read virus, and even then you can't really, you can always boot up in MS-DOS and fix the issue. Not to mention the purpose of most viruses is to harness the power of the PC in question which can't be done if it isn't working. Also a BIOS can't be corrupted it's separated from the system on a RO (READ ONLY means it can't be modified readily without a flash setup which ONLY you can do) chip. Also yes the PHATs are somewhat brickable, but almost 70% of all bricks happen by people. Only 30% of those are system errors. Where as on the Xbox360 almost 100% of the bricks are because of system error. Which is why you got a three year warranty you didn't get it because the Xbox360 is a high quality machine, you got it because Microsoft didn't want to deal with lawsuits.

You comparing a 10% or less failure against 60+% failure system.

This is why a one year warranty is standard, however. I've seen the YLOD, a few times although since I was born with a little more brain than the average joe I fix them myself every time, just what I got to deal with being an original 60gig owner. Though most likely people get the so called YLOD and fix it themselves all the time, it's really not that hard. I've had from graphical glitchs (artifacts in the game like lines), DISC problems, HDD issues, ect ect,. all fixed by following basic steps in the Manual given. This is why some first party games for Sony tell you to read the manual because people are retarded.

Possibilty is the point I'm making.
Not Probabilty.

The likelihood of getting these, is as you said. I'm not comparing anything to anything, simply saying that you don't have to "mess" with the systems to break them.

Sony EU say they're working on this but no new news.
Check their Twitter.

Its hard to say which version will sell more. I would tend to think the PS3 version would sell more due to the history of the series on Sony platforms and despite the total number of 360 consoles out there. That said, there may be a lot of folks with an Xbox that have been dying for a FF game on their Microsoft console, so time will tell I guess.

I just sold back my 360 so if I ever get FF13 it will be on PS3, but I have little interest in it given the reviews I have read so far. Sounds way too limited. 12 was my favorite of the series of late and it doesn't sound much like that, nor does it seem to have the incredible story or characters like FF6, so I will likely pass until it is very cheap.
