Final Fantasy XIII Versus development suspended photo

The latest word from Famitsu's grimy pages is that Final Fantasy XIII, part of Square-Enix's Fabula Nova Crystallis, has been put on hold so the development team can work on Final Fantasy XIII itself.

The Fabula Nova compilation is apparently having some teething problems, and with FFXIII being Squeenix's number-one priority, resources are going from Versus into the main game. The team will still be producing artwork for Versus in the meantime.

The mobile phone installment of the compilation, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, is in early development stages and is said to have a considerably large background history written entirely by Hajime Tabata.

As for the project as a whole, new announcements at E3 seem unlikely, with Square's DKΣ3713 party on the way. PS3 fans will just have to keep enjoying Guns of the Patriots while we wait for more info.

Personally, I have mixed feelings. Bringing another team in to work on the project is a good idea in general, but there's bound to be a sort of clash when they work with people that have been ingrained in the project for so long. When you look just getting them up to speed with what's done and what isn't, much less training them and shifting their mindset- it'll be, what, three, four months before they're working at full capacity?

Of course I want FFXIII to have so much polish as much as MGS4. I also like that I am getting some ample time between the PS3 FFXIII titles so that I can actuallly enjoy the story.

Looks like PS3 development isn't helping things get any better. Don't be surprised if it ends up on 360 too.

@brahms
actually, it's most definately the same engine, and thus most likely the same pipeline (with probably minor differences). It's not like they're contracting a different company to come in. They're just mergine two dev teams working on different projects in the same IP. I don't think "getting the other team" up to speed is going to be an issue.

Aww, I still have to enjoy MGS4?

Shucks.

@ceark

From what I've read they are using the same engine, but the games were supposedly totally different in terms of gameplay and scope. Overall, I think it's a good idea, I'm just pointing out that there could be some potential problems with the merging process, rather than just "Two times the number of people working on it means two times the speed!"

Just doing a little bit of a con side since I've seen nothing but pros in comments on other sites. :D

So it's still coming, just further off, right?

I can live with that.

Hopefully that means FFXIII will come out at some point this decade.

Wait, there's a Final Fantasy XIII in the works?!?! I've barely finished Final Fantasy III! That's like, 10 more FF games I have to play! KAAAAAHHHHHNNN!

Wait, so they put FF XIII on hold so that they could work on FF XIII? Confusion levels reaching critical mass!

I doubt anyone cared about Versus anyways. Plus, I hate Tetsuya Nomura and his shitty art (if you can even call it art), so this is sort of good news to me.

Bah! I was more interested in FF versus XIII than I was in XIII itself.

How about instead of putting them on the dev team to work on XIII why don't they put them to work on Kingdom Hearts 3, seeing as they are the KH dev team.

Putting off Versus means longer wait for KH3, folks. That's not cool.

I fail to see how this is even news, seems more like more PS3 flamebait to me. Game companys do this all the time, when a major in house project gets close to completion other projects are held up while extra people are sent over to help put out fires on the main project. Once its over everybody goes back to doing what they should be doing, big friggin deal.

You're absolutely right, Genius, information on the development cycle of a game is not news fit for a gamin site such as Destructoid. Yes, this was merely flamebait so that 360 owners could crawl from the woodwork and laugh at PS3 owners. Only positive PS3 stories will be posted forthwith!

Well its better than nothing but they should cancel both Versus and "agito" whatever altogether. I mean how pretentious is Square to think they can pull the same crap they did on FFVII on an UNRELEASED game?

At least they finally have the right idea first: Make the FFXIII a successful brand name first and soon, and I cannot emphasize the "soon" part enough square, you are almost the only developer still planning an JRPG for it, everybody else is tired of waiting for the PS3 to catch up and frankly not even another fanboy wetdream like MSG4 can keep the PS3 alive for long if you don't produce a FFXIII soon.

Well honestly this is what they should have done IN THE FIRST PLACE!

wtf SE, seriously, why try to release 2 FF games almost at the same time? STOP THE MILKING! FOCUS on making ONE friggin game at a time, Make it a classic and stop making SOOOOO MANY FF GAMES AT THE SAME TIME!!! THIS IS WHY YOUR SHIT IS FAILING!

jesus...

I actually welcome the news. This means that when Versus XIII does come out there'll be a larger gap between it and XIII so plenty of time to get stuck in and work through XIII instead of rushing through it to play Versus XIII.

GOOD. Just stick to making the damn Numbered Games! Make the bloody spin-offs AFTER the MAIN game is finished! By all means, they can work on the main game and the spin-offs in tandem, but bloody hell, isn't it obvious that they make the main game first? Don't most people want FFXIII first and foremost?

I'm angry because here in Australia, we sometimes have to wait YEARS before it's released here. FFXII took over a year to get to the PAL regions. I've heard that the Playstation 3 will be region free, so maybe I have a chance at importing it from the US. But jeez, finish it already. The Final Fantasy series is starting to suffer from overload - first came the films (spirits within and Advent Children, which were okay at best), then came the spin-off games (Crisis Core, etc, which were pretty good), then came the pure leaching (an FF shooter starring VINCENT? What the hell?), and now here comes the endless fighting games, games featuring minor characters, "expansions" and to my horror, SEQUELS (I refuse to even play X2 - it's NOT Final Fantasy with only THREE characters and a non-linear story line and alternative endings).

Square, stick to the numbered games. Please. Final Fantasy is a great series, but if it goes on like this, I can't imagine how much longer it can last. By diverting their resources, they are going to start to churn out "less-than-stellar" games in the pursuit of fan service and money. Don't do this Square-Enix. DON'T DO IT!
