Final Fantasy XIII update and story details photo

I won't lie. I wet my pants for Square. Always have, always will. Chrono Trigger pretty much enrolled me for life. Yeah, sometimes they make games that I think we could have done without (coughFinalFantasyX2cough), but in the long run I know I can expect their games to have engaging stories, amazing characters and great gameplay. Oh, and boys that look like girls. It's like PG 13 porn for the David Bowie set. Anyway, we'll address my fetishes in another post, as I know they're less fascinating than new FF XIII goodies!

IGN posted the yummy new details, including the names of the worlds in the game (Cocoon and Pulse) and they way they conflict with one another. The female in the trailers thought to be the lead is described as a badass who knows little about herself and is unsure of her real name and identity (Cloud? Anyone?) The story sounds a bit like a mishmash of elements from FF7 and FF10, which is pretty much fine by me since those are two of my favorite titles in this series.

People have been bitching a lot about the similarities of  Final Fantasy as a series lately, and as a long standing fan of the series, these arguments definately got me thinking. I agree that Square work more or less inside the same general universe with these games. On the other hand, so do series such as Zelda and Super Mario, and it doesn't keep fans from buying those titles. I think of FF the way I think of a series like the Ender's Game novels - similar universes, but overall, always incredibly high quality. That's why I always get excited for Square releases: I know the chances are high I'm going to find what they do interesting and worthwhile. I wish I could consistently expect as much from other developers.  Unfortunately they're busy making masterpieces like Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire. Call me crazy, but I go for a good story over juiced up next gen crap every time.

You have a good point about the people complaining about the Final Fantasies. But c'mon... different characters, different worlds, different stories... The only thing carried through the games are mascots like the chocobos, moogles and the summons.

You may excuse Square's lack of innovation, but I stopped playing after FFX and haven't given the series a second thought.

So can we assume you love the "boys" from the likes of Panic! At the Disco and Fall Out Boy. They need a good dose of beef jerky(the manliest of manly foods), tabasco sauce(the manliest of manly condiments), and some hair clippers(this ones obvious).

Synce - check out XII. Seriously. It's a beautiful game.

Some of the art style in the FF series IS beginning to get a bit...strange to say the least now.

But beside that, Ender Game series. Kick ass.

Orcist- Is FFXII at all like FFX? Storywise, annoying ass characters, cutscenes that re-interate everything for the 40th time, plot so complex a 3 year old could understand it?

Yesss. More Squeenix news. Feed my inner fanboy.

Seriously though, Synce- if you haven't at least given XII a shot you're really missing out on one of the greatest RPGs to date. You should at least rent it and see what it's like.

You know everyone makes this big up stink about FFXII, but frankly I can't get over how Star Wars it feels. Why'd they have to go aliening it up? I understand these are fantasy games but previously it was only the worlds and the Espers that were exceptionally foreign.

It makes it a lot harder to take seriously and especially to relate to when the main characters have bunny ears and wear lingerie (wts, anyone?). I haven't played the game yet but every time I see the trailers all I can think about is Star Wars, which is enough to stop me from ever giving it the shot you're all going to tell me it deserves.

Shame Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire is such a bad game, I choose giant robots over that Final Fantasy stuff any day of the week. Oh well, I keep hope up that one day there will be a game that features some robots that Go Nagai has created.

But... is Star Wars such a bad thing? Honestly, it's kinda what drew me to the story.

ESPECIALLY the scene when your characters first travel on an airship. ZOMG MILLENNIUM FALCON!

I don't mind Final Fantasy and at some point I will probably check out FFXII (Not now, I traded in my PS2 for a Wii), but I still find it hard to take the word of Final Fantasy fans now as they blindly promote any Final Fantasy games, including ones that I have played and know that suck (FFVIII for example).

I believe I played FFX that was the one with papa Sin right? It didn't do much for me, stopped playing it half way through. Was there a story? What I remember about it was a boy who kept whining about that his dad was some kind of evil god. The only good that has come from that game is that I bought it used and sold it with a profit in an other store.

After playing that one and trying FFVII before. Didn't finish that one either, I've decided I done with that series for good. Just not my cup of tea.

I have really liked every final fantasy game I have played (which is not all of them). Story? Schmory. Characters? Schmaracters.

Gameplay gameplay gamepley. I am so in control of what my characters' jobs and abilities. Whether it's Materia or junctioning spells or dress spheres or the whole idea behind Tactics, I am in control. I can use my superior gameplay intellect to beat Emerald Weapon, or make Kafka my bitch, or have a Calculator and a Mime. I can equip deathtouch to the person wearing the Lady Luck dress sphere and watch as my opponents die regardless of how many of their hit points they had left.

In FF games, I am able to kick as much ass as my mind is capable of.

I'm not sure I understand the comment about the Ender's Game series... are you suggesting those novels are just in similar universes and not related to each other at all?

I'm guessing that's not what you mean, but I honestly can't see how those books relate to the FF series.

Huge Final Fantasy fan here. I've never played a Final Fantasy I didn't love and I think people that dislike VIII are crazy. VIII's one of my favorite games of all time as well as being on my top 3 FF's of all time (alongside XII and VI).

Can't wait for XIII and Versus XIII, both are looking to be another great addition to the series.

:D ^^^^^^

FFVIII is my favorite along with IV and X

i haven't played VI (i have it so i'll play it in the summer when i actually have time) nor XII (hasn't come out in the lands of PAL yet), but i'm pretty sure XII will become my favorite (considering all the reviews it's gotten and the realtime systems it uses, as well as the license board (loved the sphere grid) and the actually mature storyline!)

but yeah, can't wait for XIII or VXIII either! versus especially... graphics by the advent children team and gameplay by the kingdom hearts team?!? I'M IN!!! :D :D :D

Bring the hate, but I loved Final Fantasy X-2. I thought it was a lot of fun, and brought a much needed lightheartedness to the series. I really can't stand all this emo garbage, and X-2 was the last game to (mostly) exclude that. Instead of bringing out these ridiculously femme guys, just take the extra step and make them all chicks. And the combat system was a lot of fun. It reminded me of an expanded and more friendly version of the Final Fantasy III job system. It's too bad it didn't sell, but I wonder what would have changed if they said Paine was a guy and called it a Job Grid instead of Garment Grid, and dubbed all the music over with the mopey stuff they seem to love so much.
Cruds- Check out the Super Robot Wars series. They're in Japanese, but you can have Shin Getter Robo nail Char from Gundam with a Getter Shine Spark. Great games.
