Final Fantasy XIII sells over 1 million units in America photo

The team at Square Enix has a lot to celebrate today. Final Fantasy XIII has sold over one million units here in America in the first five days that it's been out. Final Fantasy XIII has now become the fastest-selling installment in the franchise's history.

Square didn't give a breakdown of whether FF XIII sold better on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 so we'll have to wait for the NPD data next month to get a clear picture on that  .... along with a ton of console fanboy rage. With the release of XIII, the Final Fantasy series has now reached 96 million units sold worldwide since the first game appeared on the original Nintendo.

I've been hearing a lot of mixed things about Final Fantasy XIII. Some love it and others are bored with it already. How's your experience been with Square's latest offering?

I liked it and pretty much disagree with Sterlings review. Do I think it's the best FF game to date? No but it offers an all around solid FF experience.

It's alright. I actually didn't like it very much until I hit Chapter 11, which I've put almost 20 hours into alone. So... It's interesting. I've almost maxed out the leveling system so I'll be hitting the story full force again... Not sure if I'll still be enthralled since it's back to point A to point B story telling instead of the vast wide open plains. I guess we'll see.

Good on Squenix though. A million at sixty bux a pop is a pretty penny

Final fantasy has been in a drought, come on all of the remakes do not count. There are tons of fans out there who are desperate for the next big FF game. And when your desperate you will drink/eat/sleep with almost anything. I hope they dont take any finacial sucess they get out of the game as an indication that they are going in the right direction. Because for me personally the next game like this will not have any of the grace that I had for 13, because of the likes of 7, 8 and 9, and to a lesser extent 10.

After just recently beating it, I loved it. Not sure it's my favorite as I'm still letting the experience marinate through me but it was an enjoyable ride. I mean it's the first JRPG I've liked that hasn't been a strategy RPG since god knows how long. For the most part, I liked how I didn't have to stop and grind to proceed to the next boss of the game. Just didn't like that I had to read the datalog to really understand the games plot.

I would like to say they don't deserve it but it's a good looking game that they put a lot of effort into so good for Square Enix. Though I would like them to make another game like The World Ends With You or Chrono Trigger despite not really thinking those games are as good as people say they are I've noticed that they make better games all around when they create new IPs rather than going with the flow of sequels.

They also were better back when they were Square but that's another story.

I'm having a pretty good time with the game, I'm at chapter 7 with about 13 hours under my belt. The linearity isn't really a problem for me, and the simplified and refined stats system is great. I wish the Crystarium offered a bit more in the way of customization, since right now it doesn't feel like I have much choice in how my characters level up. I collect CP, and they move along in a linear fashion. It's not a bad thing that the characters proceed in one direction, but if that's all they're going to do then they should have just made it a standard leveling system and left out the whole crystarium. But maybe it opens up later, I'm still in the early stages I suppose.

The battles are quick paced and auto-battle really helps out with the monotony of mashing attack over and over, like other FFs have you do when battling random baddies. Paradigm switching is a great way of doing the strategy, which is similar to the dress sphere feature of FFX-2 that made that game not a COMPLETE failure.

Overall, loving it to pieces. I like the story and feel that the characters each have some depth to them, which is quite nice. Can't wait to see the rest of the game!

Nothing yet because I do not own any of the systems available for it.

Still I am not that much into Final Fantasy games anyway.

Maybe it's time we get something else that is not a spin-off from them?

...About the game. Well, i been watching "very" closely this title in the Internet since the announcement. And i just can't bring myself to buy it, you know why? Because i already played better JRPGs games than this (in my PS2), i'm not joking.

its a little bit paradox: i like it AND iam bored with it... depends
i think there are a couple of interessting plot points, some very cool locations, and the battle system is cool even if it sometimes does to much for you, its still challenging (and thats a feature on its own)... i am at chapter 8, with about 17 or so hours into the game, but iam still very curious what will come, i escpially want to see the gran pulse environment... so all in all, yes i like it ! best FF ? dunno... worst ? no maybe not

This is bad news for the many Final Fantasy fans, like me, who thought this game was a ego driven linear piece of shit with terrible characters and dialogue. Selling this many copies of this "game" will further justify Square Enix's terrible design choices. Be prepared for more cut scene heavy, straight line walking, Sarah screaming, Final Fantasy games in th near future. However, I, like many others, returned their copy once the reality of this games shittiness reared it's ugly head. Let's hope Versus 13 is a complete departure from this game.

The resonance of fate demo kinda turned me off but I think its a game you need to get into and learn its system before you actually enjoy it.(I mean I was killing stuff but didn't really understand how some shots were doing different damage) It was the JP demo as well so nothing translated to help me along. I still plan on giving it a fair shake, after watching the GT review and all the talk of strategy and customization hooked me in. I love a game that makes me think, and lets me play dress up(customization).

As for FF13, as a game its fun. There is an amount of adrenaline with each battle, and the strategy is just figuring out which paradigm mode would be best in a given encounter. After the first two encounters it becomes clockwork until you get a new set of enemies but it was always like that in a final fantasy game. Attack attack attack, heal, attack attack attack, heal potion ect ect. In this final fantasy there are more layers that people mistake for simplicity. The linearity doesn't bother me as I enjoy linear experiences, and all final fantasy games have been sort of linear. It is just this game literally takes you down a narrow path(very narrow) rather than creating an illusion of open-ness. Only thing that bothered me was the constant swapping of party leaders, I would of been more happy if they kept lightning around the entire time even if that might of messed with the story.

SquareEnix has spent a long time watering and pruning the Final Fantasy tree and it finally took six years for the Final Fantasy XIII fruit to fully ripen and drop to the ground where starving Final Fantasy fans will finally devour its contents, for 50 bucks of course.

I feel like the battles can be a chore, and considering that is half the game, that's not a good sign. The story is complete drivel as most newer Square stories are. I really, really wish they would go back to classic themes, as it's been a long time since they've written a character that behaved and emoted like an actual person. Still, it's an rpg on my PS3 and there are precious few of those, so despite what I've said, I am enjoying it somewhat.

I'm about 60 hours into the game, and I've enjoyed every minute of if. It's not threatening FFVI as my favorite in the series by any means, bit it's definitely been worth the wait and the $60, for me.

I'm sure that the PS3 version has sold more, but I'm guessing that the old sexbox has sold more than enough copies to validate the port. Use those monies for console Final Fantasy Tactics and Parasite Eve plz.

I'm enjoying FF13 quite a lot. I love some of the improvements over the classic formula. They automated tedious and repetitious input in battles, they removed the time-sinks/illusions of freedom known as towns, shops, and maze dungeons, and they kept the story moving by taking out a lot of the interest-draining lulls that JRPGs are famous for. I really respect that they tried to improve the experience. Unfortunately, the constant whining for all of those boring and outdated elements is probably going to revert all progress, and the next Final Fantasy game is going to be a carbon copy of the old style, bad mechanics and all.

It's been good to me so far.

I really don't understand the fuss or the surprise that some people don't like 13. Some are seemingly outraged that FF 13 wasn't fun for them and that they wasted their money blah blah blah. This is a FF game! Seriously with the exception of like 7 how many people felt the same way about any FF game. Dose anyone who is not really into FF really get just how much FF fans preferences differ from one to another? Every fan of the franchise has their favorite because believe it or not they are not all the same. (I know that it is fun to say that they are all the same just to make fanboys scatter like ants in the rain but it’s just not true) If it's not the battling system, it's the story or the characters. Or even the way a character is customized and leved up. Wars are raged in forums over which final fantasies are worthy of being called the best and which ones were failed experiments. It is the nature of the franchise to be controversial because they change something with every new game. Remember your history folks it's not that serious. I say if you have any interest in jrpgs at all you should at least rent it. FF games has always been a personal experience you either love it or hate it. Gaming is a personal experience! Just be happy that you don't live in Japan where you can't rent games. At least in the states you have a choice.

Have yet to get it, waiting for price to drop :-/ , but if the X360 greatly rivals/surpasses the PS3 sales, i wonder if S-E will also go multiplatform with FF13 Versus?, now the fanboy rage for that one would truly make the internet implode.

It's getting pretty good, and I have to admit I've gotten addicted to the combat. Problem is it took 20+ hours to get this way, which makes me regret buying it full price. A rental would've been enough.

Looking forward to Versus though. Hopefully SE will have learned their lesson from this experiment... But they don't listen to reviews so... crap.

I like it ok so far, I'm around chapter 11 I believe, I can enjoy it despite its faults, not my favorite FF game but I'm enjoying it. I put it down for a while to play God of War 3, and I picked up Dante's Inferno on the cheap, $32 for the PS3 divine edition shipped so I've got to finish that too. All that plus the new Heavy Rain DLC I've got to get through. Too much shit to do this month with gaming. Its worse than the holidays. And splinter cell is coming out soon, FFS, but I think I'm going to wait to read some reviews on that before I pick it up.

Like many, I feel XIII has its share of flaws (little to no exploration for most of the game, for example). However, I'm still having fun with the game. Some people hate the battle system, while some people love it. Count me in the latter camp.

All in all, it definitely deserves more than 4/10.
