Final Fantasy XIII review delayed due to PIRACY! photo

You may have noticed that we don't have a Final Fantasy XIII review up yet. In fact, an astonishing number of North American outlets are missing a review for the biggest RPG of the year. Unfortunately, we're here to tell you that you can't expect one on Destructoid at the present moment because of piracy

Wait, what?

Yes, piracy! Don't ask us for the logic behind it, because we don't quite understand ourselves. However, Square Enix only started sending review copies out yesterday due to "piracy concerns", so barely anybody got a game before launch (save for the obvious big sites). However, apparently piracy doesn't exist in Europe because they've all had copies for weeks. Bizarre logic is bizarre, but there you are.

So, just letting you all know that our Final Fantasy XIII review is coming, but that your humble author (me) will be enjoying a week or two of sleepless nights as he writes GDC news by day and plays FFXIII by night, all in the name of getting you guys a review. In the meantime, check out Dale North's pros and cons gleaned from the Japanese version of the game.

Oh, and for those console fanboys out there, we'll be reviewing the PS3 version!

Damn you, pirates!
I'm curious to see what you'll say about this, Jim. Ever since I played Lost Odyssey and experienced the 200% Awesome that is Jansen, no JRPGs can seem to match up.

@Monodi the 360 is just as piratable, 360 version always gets leaked before PC version from someone's experience other than mine *ahem*

It's not about paying for it. I've paid for plenty of review games. It's about getting shit up quick. I wanted to have a review for you all today. Obviously I cannot for I am not a Time Lord.

Because the game should be arriving today. Why would it make any sense whatsoever to buy something today that I am getting today?

Piracy? Really? The game was already leaked last week, I know 2 people who were playing pirated 360 copies. SE is lying to you Jim!

@eddienoteddy

Review copies are often given to outlets before the game is released -- in some cases, weeks in advance of a scheduled release date. That way reviewers have time to thoroughly play and review said game.

@rogXue

There is a tiered level of media outlets. Anyone that knows anyone in PR will tell you the same thing. In a very basic view you have your top tier outlets, your mid-level outlets, and bottom level outlets. Some places break it out further depending on the information to be released.

This would imply to me that only those media outlets considered to be "top tier" got review copies.

"This would imply to me that only those media outlets considered to be "top tier" got review copies."

Yep. I'm perfectly cool with that, too. I know full well that IGN and GameSpot are first in line. Nature of the business.

This post is more just informing readers about the review status, and also poking fun at the reason given. It's not meant to be bitching anybody out, for that one guy who seems intent on missing the point.

And I bet 9/10 times it's the most trusted top tiered that releases the game to the torrents. That sucks Jim, Square has always had an elitist feel about them... guess this just proves it.

Oh well, take your time and enjoy the game the way you want to play it then. Rather have an honest experienced review than a rushed "I need to get through this so I can post a review" umm review.

Piracy, huh? Kooky. Oh well, I can wait on a review.

However, if the Resonance of Fate review is late, I'll bitch about it on the site.

I might even make a c-blog to express my disdain.

So watch out for that. Expressions of disdain can really fucking hurt.

@eddienoteddy Come on man are you telling me that if you wrote for a gaming website and were given a review copy of a game, even if it was later than other sites, for free that you'd rather pay for it? I call bullshit.

1) You can't pirate PS3 games.

2) They are sending you the PS3 version.

3) Wut?

@ Corak I did it with Bad Company 2. EA sent us the game on PS3 and late. So I bought it for 360 when my GameStop opened at 10 a.m., played it, beat it and had a review up by Thursday.

The old Final Fantasies are Linear too until the end. At which point lots of sidequests unlock.

Having a world map where you can run around aimlessly is not freedom or un-linearity.

Reviews have been around 8s for the most part...I have a hunch Jim's review will probably be around a 7.5. This is based solely on my CLEARLY XBOX FANBOYISM.
The fact they took out shops annoys me. Also, Vanilla's voice needs a mute button. I seriously hit the mute button my TV every time she opens her damn mouth.

This kind of thing is becoming more and more prevalent, like it or not. When I first started working in the video rental industry, we got demo copies of EVERYTHING, from blockbusters to indie films. Unfortunately, this was heavily abused, so the only demo copies sent out now are of low quality films that no one is going to bother ripping. This isn't an instance where the industry can be blamed for being cautious.

I'd imagine part of it is that they feel review sites are responsible for releasing a lot of the pirates versions of stuff.

One of my friends swears by his R4, and he always seemed to have games right when the reviews started popping up.
