Final Fantasy XIII possibly delayed until 2009

Final Fantasy XIII possibly delayed until 2009 photo
     Final Fantasy

Square recently held their yearly fiscal meeting, which yielded some very distressing news for RPG fans awaiting the newest Final Fantasy with baited breath: The game may not be released until 2009. The trouble seems to revolve around the White Engine, the in-house engine that is being developed for all PS3 titles from Square. Since development of the engine is moving slower than your grandmother, the projections to finish the title have been pushed way, way back.

Good grief, Charlie Brown. Is it just me that sees the irony of Square pumping out FF side projects right and left, yet losing their steam on the next major installment in the series? They've gone from being one of the most reliable providers of solid titles to as vaguely dependable as your flaky friend with the bulemia problem. While this is likely a very real issue, it just stings for those of us who feel Square has been jerking fans all over the place as of late (a-hem.)

If you happen to be able to read Japanese, you can read the Financial Report for yourself here.

So, they need time to port the engine to the 360? ;)

imho, this, and not exclusives or graphic quality, is what really turns the next-gen wars. Nevermind how powerful your hardware is if you need to hire MIT staff to actually get something released on time. And I wouldn't be surprised if this was a big part of the motivation for Sony cutting down prices on their Developer Kits, as well as giving some more love to poor software engineers out there.

This is nothing. It took, what, five years for Final Fantasy XII to be released?

Trust me, us Squeenix fans are used to playing the waiting game.

I don't even care about Final Fantasy; I hate those damn games. I will throw my proverbial hat in with the "BOO" crowd for other reasons

"Its hard" is no longer a valid excuse, developers. Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank were available not just on-time, but early and they look, run, and play great. Square Enix is a behemoth in comparison to Naughty Dog or Insomniac.

@Variable and Kilgore: The way the industry is running now, talking about games years before they're going to be released, I think we would have heard about it by now. Keeping it secret would serve no purpose and, preemptively, if Sony was going to pay them to keep quiet, why wouldn't they just pay them not to make it for 360?

That blows. One the bright side though, I'll probably buy another PS3 by then and it will probably be a whole lot cheaper.

I have a hard time caring about this. Odd, considering final fantasy was once my most favouritest series ever. But IX wasn't the game I wanted, X was terribly disapointing, XI was an MMO and therefore not worth the time and XII was delayed by over six months between american and european releases. I haven't even bothered picking it up yet. Also, the constant shitty tie-ins and rehashes don't help much either. I might pick up the game when I buy a PS3, but it will by no means be a deciding factor in such a purchase.

Honestly, I would have been totally shocked if it had been released in 2008. Calling it now: The game will get delayed again and probably not be released until 2010 or later. It wouldn't be unusual.

i agree with you colette. I really wish they would just move back to the solid and amazing titles that came out every year or every other year... or now since they've merged with enix to have only the main entries to the dragon quest, final fantasy, and i guess kingdom hearts games, and any other titles would have to be new IPs... no spinoffs!!

So is this just for the main FFXIII or does it include the 12 or so spin-offs they have planned for it?
