Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360 'not a hard decision' photo

With Final Fantasy XIII finally releasing in North America, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has touched upon the always controversial decision to port the game to Xbox 360. According to Wada, it wasn't a hard decision to make. His team wanted to do it, and the install base was such that it was essentially a no-brainer.

"The Xbox team has been asking us to have a [Final Fantasy] game developed on our platform," explains Wada. "Also, the Xbox 360 console is available in many homes in US and European markets so that was not really a hard decision to make."

Many zealots accused Square Enix of treachery after the fateful 2008 E3 conference when XIII was revealed to be multiplatform, and the subject has been a sore point between opposing gamers ever since. Comparison videos, technical specs, the number of discs, and all sorts of other squabbles have been had over the past months. Now that the games are out, we can all just sit back and be glad that we're actually playing the thing, right?

well, duh. they're more than doubling the game's potential audience by just making a last-minute port of a game that was already in development. definition of a no-brainer.

Treachery!?

Everything should be multiplatform - more money for devs equals more games for us. The more fanboys whine and boycott multiplatform games, the less cool things we get. I think DMC 4 was the first multiplatform announcement by an Eastern dev - I remember all the Xbots saying it was the early end of the PS3.

I've never really understood this whole console exclusivity. Unless you have a deal or something with a specific platform you might as well expand your customer base.

My only problem with multi-platform games these days is that we're starting to see platform exclusive content. It's a minor thing, but (as frequently discussed on Podtoid) it's kind of annoying to feel like you have a slightly incomplete game.

It's like watching a bunch of spoiled kids: "If mommy forces me to share my toys, I'd rather smash them so you cannot enjoy them"... even my three year old daughter is above that.

I suppose that if you are a twelve-year old with a current game console (possibly extorted from your parents with lots of temper tantrums), and you have nothing else to do other than troll on the internet, then you are prime material to be a spoiled little brat.

I bought the game for my 360 yesterday morning. I can honestly say, despite some minor artifacting issues (noticeable generally only during far-ranging shots in very bright light) the game is gorgeous and plays like a dream. Load times are minimal and rare and I haven't installed a single disc.

If you're a 360 fan put off by the talk that the PS3 version is superior, I implore you to give it a shot. I fell in love instantly.

Remember when the SNES and Genesis would get the "same" game, but each one would actually be very different in all aspects? At least we aren't in those days...

I wouldn't be sour if it wasn't for Xpox forcing the devs to remove the Japanese voice track from the original PS3 version because the 360 didn't have enough room.

As a once avid FF fan and an owner of all consoles I wish they weren't so easily bought into porting it. PS3 needs more exclusives and Japanese devs need to know their primary console isn't a dead fish. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey say hi.

RichardBlaine hit the mark. The only time there is a problem with console exclusive games going multiplatform is when there is exclusive content or dlc that one console gets that the other doesn't have.

For instance, if Microsoft paid SquareEnix to make exclusive dlc for the Xbox360 version of FFXIII, then I would cry foul. But if all the Xbox360 crowd gets is exactly what's on the PS3 version, then I have no problem with it at all.

It's like MW2. Microsoft paid to get the first round of dlc exclusive for one month and that pisses me off. That shit makes me feel like a second class gamer, since I bought MW2 on the PS3.

FF13 is not fully multi-platform. In Asia you can only get FF13 on PS3s, no word on xbox 360s at all...

Seriously though, the only problem with this game going multiplat are things that were removed (Japanese voice tracks) just to make the two platforms "equal".

I bought a console with a fucking BR drive so that my games could have all the content the devs want to put on there! Not so content can be cut despite fitting on the disc to make it "equal" to a cheaper, feature lacking, behind-the-times console.

Super Cerial.

@SC: Enough PS3 games don't get multiple audio tracks even if they would fit, so that is no argument whatsoever.

The only good thing (other than cheevos) I can see in the 360 version is that you can start your next playthrough from Disc 3 and just sell Disc 1 and 2 to some idiot. Up to that point, there isn't much you can vary with anyway. Unless you forget to grab items or waste all your upgrade material on shit :)

Well also the reason it pissed everyone off is because they bought a PS3 for the sole reason that it was exclusive to the PS3 and nothing else, and for Square to pull that off at the last stage was a slap in the face of those buyers.

they had to recoup their losses from the PS2 version of XIII so I completely understand this move. I only wish they used better compression methods for the 360 version as its rediculous that they have a gig or so left on each disc.

As everyone was so quick to point out the japanese audio track was chopped because they were already pushing it when it came to space on the 360 version and the didn't want to alienate the 360 crowd by giving the ps3 version something they didn't have.

That's my only problem with multi plats at the moment, if both consoles can get the product fine, but if the ps3 version has to have features cut out because of it I've got an issue with that. At 65$ a game, cut features is not a word I like to hear.

And then they usually sell it as DLC, that's just adding insult to injury.if one console can do it and the other can't, well that's too bad for it, but to chop it from both versions is just wrong, especially when I still have to pay full price.

I'm a little pissed Square cut the Japanese voice track and essentially blamed 360 for it. There's no reason to not include it on a system that can accommodate it, I hardly think a Japanese audio track is a feature many people (especially on 360) will use, and it's hardly something (at least I hope) that people would complain over price wise. Games like Star Ocean added Japanese tracks when they were brought over to PS3, Eternal Sonata added paper doll features, so why is this different?

This just seems lazy on Square's behalf, they could have easily added the track but they were too worried about pissing off 1/4th of the lesser half of their fanbase. That's just stupid.

Yo, chocs!

Not Dorky - I can understand it.

BlackNexus. That's what I thought. So a little disingenous to say that Xbox forced them to remove it, which was the point I was questioning.

It sucks, and to be honest, I'm an Xboxer with absolutely zero interest in this game, so I would of been happier for it to remain PS3 exclusive, with the Japanese audio.

But business makes money, and Xbox is seriously good business for a games developer.

Whether or not the versions of each platform play the same or not, I did think this was an interesting move by Microsoft, only because I think a lot of average gamers will see "one dist for ps3, three for xbox" and assume that means the PS3 is much more powerful.

I don't mind disc switching, but I'd rather NOT do it. I wonder if FF13 ends up "proving" the PS3 is more advance when all is said and done.

C'mon Sexy
Do you really believe they extra removed it? I think it was just laziness. They only had to put into the jap version the english texts and audios. They didnt. Get over it. Maybe its coming as a free dl? Some games over the chance dl extra language packs for free. At least for the 360. Maybe they get the japs voiceovers. Put i see your not THAT into xbox gaming.

@Watermanx: You ever played FF13, read any reviews or in fact know anything about it at all? If so, you would know already the battles are real-time. What is flow in RPG terms anyway? I guess you do have to wait between attacks, but you have to wait between attacks in SFIV too.

I dunno, maybe you want to sit there compulsively mashing the X-button spasming out like some sort of compulsive masturbator, drooling "flooow fllooooooooooooooow" for hours. Some of us like strategy.
