Final Fantasy XIII on sale in Japan on Dec 17 photo

The moment that Japan has been awaiting for over half a decade may finally have arrived today, thanks to a teaser and some Internet Matlockery. A Japanese Youtube flash ad had been teasing the reveal of Final Fantasy XIII's release date today, and a few impatient kids decided to dig a little deeper and find out ahead of time.

All they needed to do was change the word "before" to "after" in the ad's URL in order to come up with the image you now see before you -- a banner bearing Final Fantasy XIII's Japanese release date of December 17. At the time of writing, Square Enix has neither confirmed nor denied the release date, but weeaboo importers may want to contact their local dealer.

Who knew? Looks like a full version of Final Fantasy XIII might see the light of day somewhere in the world before this year is out.

[Update: The release has now been confirmed by Square Enix at an event in Tokyo. Japanese gamers (and not-so-Japanese importers) can get their hands on the game December 17 for 8,800 Yen!]

I'm going to laugh if this gets pushed back as well to avoid the imaginary end of year game crash.

Very nice, they have been touting speedier import times as well so the rest of the western world should only be 3 months behind JP release at most.

The game is looking good, the dubbing is really high rate. It sounds better than the JP voices imo. Regardless this isnt a game I would import, no matter how desperately I wanted it. It is a story heavy game~

On its own merits though getting into combat seems speedy and efficient which is generally my reason for not playing many turn based JRPG's because of how slow combat loads are and how static it loooks visually. Even if your not directly controlling your characters, adding al lthat motion makes the game "feel" faster and less like taking turns.

I refuse to believe this game isn't coming out in 2014.

Drat, I don't fancy my chances of getting it before Christmas with the post rush then.

COOL!

Can't wait to get it in the UK on that day because another console didn't come along and delay the game for the west...

OH WAIT!

Something will happen to delay it. It's fate. It'll be recalled because one of the character themes is offensive to a religious group or something.

As much as I'm sure plenty of people will be creaming over this game, I honestly think that the Final Fantasy series is by far the worst I've ever played. I have never liked a single JRPG, but FF takes the gold medal.

Holy crap, you don't like JRPGs, and therefore think a JRPG series is bad? Brain overload.

Not sure if Japan date gets delayed, but world probably ends if Euro release doesn't get pushed back.

I've played every FF since 7 courtesy of a brother who is a huge fan, I just couldn't like the games. I've given each game a more than fair chance to grow on me but it just doesn't, don't think I'm deciding I don't like them without playing them, I'm not. ;)

Just knowing that the U.S. release date is FINALLY on the horizon is almost more than I can deal with. I definitely hope that we'll have our hands on this beauty in March or April. Maybe another playthrough of IV, VI, and VIII will be just what I need to help pass the time and get me ready for XIII.

I had thought about buying the US release, but I read recently that the ps3 version is having the Japanese audio track cut in order to "be exactly the same" as the 360 version, which obviously wouldn't have room on the 3-dvd plan atm. Can anyone confirm this? Did I miss a news bit about it?

Is this a simultaneous release? Or is Japan getting it first?

US release isn't until spring 2009. Supposedly because Xbox payed them to not release the US ps3 version until the 360 version was ready

CtMythic: "I have never liked a single JRPG, but FF takes the gold medal."

Gold medal? So . . . you do like it?

Personally, I just hope it washes the taste of XII from my mouth. That sour, lasting-three-years taste.

Now, talk about surprising, it could have never occurred to me that it would be released this year, still, we need the confirmation. Now, how the hell am I gonna get a PS3.

I doubt the US release will have japanese audio, but the english voices sound really good so far, even better than FF12's great english dub. Troy Baker is playing Snow(Kanji from Persona 4, Alec from RF: Guerilla, and Yuri from Tales of Vesperia), so you know Square is using talented actors for both their english and japanese dubs.

I was hearing rumors that the the visuals of the games actually downgraded since the 360 version was announced. Is there truth to this? I am aware of the fact that they promised they would not change anything but.... You know what i wish they would do is create ps3 game and make it look as amazing as possible (if rumor can be trusted). Then spend the rest of the time after release to work/perfect xbox version, add extra tournament mode and sell. Essentially that is what the ps3 has been getting and im fine with it if we get the their best effort and then they can worry about making the xbox version better(read lost planet extreme edition)

Well hooray - that means that the PAL version will come out sometime within this decade. Hopefully.

As for "down-graded" graphics, I really don't care. I've seen how the demo looks - it looks good enough. As long as FF keeps pushing the graphical edge (as in, as long as the next game looks better than the last), then I'm happy.

Ah, well there's your problem. The FF series really went downhill starting with FF7. I thought FF7 was a great game, but I don't really think any of the PS1/PS2 FF games matched up to the quality of the SNES ones. That may be my retro-goggles speaking though.

Wow. There are still people who think they somehow downgraded the graphics just because of the 360 version... That just seems impossible to me. The xbox 360 has a larger memory for textures so how the hell could that make the ps3-version worse... Please do not try to start the flame wars here.

@flamindeku-stick - The 360 may have larger memory for texures and whatnot, but if they did dumb down the graphics (or anything for that matter) on the 360, it's so the game would fit on 4 discs instead of 12.

12 DVDs would equal about 96GB, far as I know the bluray version is only going to be 25GB which is more than enough on 3 DVDs let alone 4.

I just hope that when the US Release rolls around I won't have to sift through a million JP-version or JP-text FAQs and topics on gamefaqs to find one small thing like Dissidia. Seriously it's like everyone fucking imported the game and now the whole damn board speaks Japanese.

Nice!too bad only PS3 version's coming to japan.
Guess i'll have to wait extra 2 or 3 months for 360 release.

Better not spoil myself from the videos and reviews until the eng. version comes out.
