Final Fantasy XIII may help the PS3 to break sales records photo

For Sony, it seems like titles in the Final Fantasy series and their console sales are forever intertwined. We saw it with the PlayStation and Final Fantasy VII, and then later with Final Fantasy X and the PS2. And if hunches turn out to be true, the same has happened with the PS3 and Final Fantasy XIII...or its demo.

Sinobi says that Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Comlete's Blu-ray package may have pushed sales up to a record breaking 57,000 this past week, the launch week of the movie. As you know, this movie came packaged with the Final Fantasy XIII demo, which it seems like all of Japan was waiting on. For comparison's sake, Kotaku says that the PS3 sales for the week before were 16,701 units. That's quite a jump, isn't it?

To know for sure, we'll have to wait for Media Create's numbers, which are due out sometime today. Be sure to keep an eye out as Destructoid's own impressions of this package and the Final Fantasy XIII demo are coming soon.

I am still dissapointed they are releasing FFXIII for Xbox, hopefully this will give PS3 the lead it needs

Why does it *need* the lead? To easee your damaged pride. Does it really matter which console sells better? Long as the customer's happy. Anyway, It's not all Sony's fault that they're second to the 360. It just so happens the 360 is a dam good machine, with a damn good games library. It merits it's lead, and that is something Sony fanboys just can't seem to accept.

On the subject of FFXIII.... meh. Not interested.

An rpg doing well on the japanese system, ya don't say( and a demo no less). To bad the other rpg devs couldn't figure that one out.

Why are WE getting the tales game a year late again?RPG's would pull similar numbers in the US if they would stop shuning the system were the majority of the fanbase is.

I guess it doesn't matter how many consoles are sold, if a large percentage of them break within a year anyways.

It's alright, the Xbox people can enjoy it too, as long as they don't mind having the change a disc every 30 minutes.

Can't wait for the demo.

I supposed that i don't NEED one system to do better than the other, but i really am happy that the ps3 has something to help it get out of the hole. I think its an awesome system that catches a lot of flack because of its price and having a smaller library than the xbox. That being said, nowadays thats not even true, the ps3 really does have a lot of good games, and i think ff13 will help others let their guard down and enjoy them as well.

I hear you Chaos. It just beguiles me, the loyalty that some show to PS3, like Sony will give them a medal or something. Guess what? Sony are behind with PS3 because of their own stupidity.

360 does what it does well enough.

Don't forget, FF was on exclusive Nintendo platforms, long before Sony ever arrived on the console scene. Such flag waving is out of the question these days. If Square like money, having games like FF across formats makes sense, especially with the way the global economy is.

So, pick up your wounded pride and get over FFXIII also being on 360.

As for Advent Children Blu Ray sales, its none other than those mega loyal japanese FF, PS3 owners that make this happen. Not surprised at all.

Also I still find amusement in the irony of Playstation fanboys laughing at the idea of mutliple discs...

One disc or four? Personally I couldn't care less so long as the game's good.

I'm just laughing at the fact that there seems to be some closet fanboys in this topic.....ChaosTeaCup *cough* Cowboy TTop *cough*, sorry I'm allergic to bullshit.

Personally I can't wait but it has been overhyped so I hope I'm not disappointed. I would of liked FF12's battle system back personally, this one's more like FFX-2 *sad face*. Heck going back to FFX would have been fine.

I bet there are people that still believe FFXIII will be exclusive to the PS3. Microsoft should probably take the effort to advertise. If MS doesn't advertise, I can easily see FFXIII selling some PS3's because people are unaware.

It really comes down to the controller for me. I prefer 3D games with the 360 and I prefer menu driven / fighting games with the dualshock.

Yep, I'll openly admit that I prefer the 360. If that makes me a fanboy, so be it. At least we 'xbots' are enthusiatic fanboys unlike the desperate fanboys with inferiority complexes that the PS3 has bred in some quarters.

Seriously though, it seems Square Enix's decision to give the xbox FF, is an economic decision. Afterall, these guys want money for all their hard work, and why only settle for a third of the next-gen market, when you could get a sizeable amount from the other two thirds? On the multi-disc thing, I really don't think it will bother anyone - the odd bit of physical interaction with your console is not the end of the world; gets you off your lazy arse every now and; shake off the old pins and needles. Besides, it'll probably still be quicker than waiting for the PS3s long-arsed loading times. But that's just the reason I have no interest in FF - too much FMV. Boooooring.

@ ChaosTeaCup

I'm guessing that was aimed at me? I don't mind though. I guess you wouldn't be a fan of Metal Gear Solid's long, but amazing cut scenes then if you don't like long FMV's. And I don't really understand the "PS3s long-arsed loading times" comment, as it isn't like that.

It would have been nice to keep FF a Playstation exclusive but if it means Square Enix don't go under and they make more money fair play to them, they make good games. FF7 and 9 didn't bother me with multi discs so it wouldn't bother me if it went multi-disc, it kind of makes you feel like you have more moneys worth and a longer game, as it gives the impression of, more discs = more game. Well I guess it actually IS in today's standards of HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

squeenix would sell a ton of PS3's if they remade FF7 and released it alongside FF13. But thats just me.

I'll still get it for the PS3. I also honestly don't think any game coming out is going to individually make a real dent in the 360 to PS3 separation. It will take a few really good games, time, and a price drop at some point to do this.

I get games for the PS3 because it's quiet and I don't have to worry about when my 360 may RROD (yes, it's an older console that can do that still; knowing my luck it will happen right as I start playing ME2 or something like that). I'm loyal to PS3 because it has what I want the most, reliable hardware that allows me to play most of the latest games from third parties. I'm likely unique among others here in that I really don't care about online gaming or having a large friends lists.

Ok this got a little out of hand, but with this game what doesn't .

But I have a bone to pick with those who say extra disc's doesn't make a difference. It makes a huge difference but its always yelled by fanboys so people dismiss it without considering there might be truth behind it.

We would not have had that whole format war debacle if it didn't make a difference.the problem goes farther than just running out of disk space, not every games data can just be chopped in half and put on another disk, stats have to be carried over, satistics have to stay the same.then even if you can you limit the second disk because a nine gb disc is now a five gb disk thanks to all the data.Multi disks should only be used OCCAISIONALLY but with the 360 there starting to become more common placed.

Even if you can put the game on another disk that doesn't mean you can afford to.even if its just a little info on a disk that's another production line you must add to your dev cost( notice how the only people doing the multi disk thing is square "money bags" enix). A one disk production line will always be cheaper than two, and somtimes devs simply don't have the funds to make that extra disk so they cut both versions of the game so they don't ailienate the 360 fanbase.

DVD is not obsolete yet but were preparing the funeral, blu-ray is being adopted quickly for a reason.I wish the 360 had used blu-ray because it would have avoided most of the problems its about to face.

Now will all that I stated affect this game,I dunno, I haven't seen any evidence that it will and I hope I don't (that's why I'm keeping an eye on it) but I can't tell you the number of times I've gone" hmm it feels like somthinds missing here and the dev meant to add somthing else, I wonder why he didn't".

Certainly a one-disk production line is cheaper than a multiple disk production line, but I doubt it effects developers' decision about the size of their games. They just use multiple disks if the game gets too big for one, end of story. How much more expensive can it really be?

@Unassumin: Very. Royalty fees are per disc, not as a whole. Unless you know you're going to sell 2 million plus, you don't want to go more than two discs, otherwise your ROI will begin to plummet. Even worse is that royalty fees on the 360 seem to be higher than that of the PS3 since many companies last year showed much higher profit margins for their PS3 sales in comparison to other consoles.

You ever wonder why a lot of these small companies are being swallowed by larger ones, its the dev and production costs, easily the 2 most expensive parts of game development( its one of the reasons digital distribution is popular, production cost are very low).

Production costs was (is) one of the reasons everyone was pissed at sony, you had to start up a whole other line for blu-ray( that's why now that its replacing dvd and the costs are going down people aren't griping as much).

But to answer your question one extra line can be the difference between landing in the green and landing in the red.

Just like RE5, I know tons of folks who have both systems but are getting it for PS3 because: "I've always played it on that system and it feels weird not to."

Don't know what difference that makes, nor do I care. All I know is that I'm getting it on PS3 and I am going to have fun playing it.

@ Everybody who explained why multi-disk is bad: I thank you good sirs/madams, you have opened my eyes.

Would have been soooooooo good though for Kojima if he'd put in the load of extras he meant to in MGS4 just by adding an extra disk.

Bad, no you misunderstood, its ok for devs to do that but in moderation, that simply can't be the norm when too many devs can't do it, or can't afford to do it. the 360 current environment is forcing them to go that route. it would be ok if kojima added extra discs because he choose to ,its not forced on him.

its like humans and water, a person needs water to survive and will choose how much to drink ( key word being CHOOSE ) however if theres to much water that person drowns( ok not the most perfect analogy but you get my point).

While you make a number of good points I'd like to also point out that these problems are or can be alleviated to a certain degree by the presence of a hard-drive. Also it's not always difficult to cut games up into separate discs, some games are perfectly suitable for this.

As a whole though you do, as I mentioned earlier, make some good points - particularly regarding cost problems.
