Final Fantasy XIII for 360 is two months old photo

Awwwr, how adorable, it's an ickle baby! Square Enix has revealed that the development of Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 is only two months old, despite being announced a year ago. The publisher has consistently promised that 360 development would be secondary to PS3 development, and seems to have made good on that promise.

"Up to the trial demo version that was released in Japan, [FFXIII] was PS3-only in terms of development," explains producer Yoshinori Kitase. "The Xbox 360 version is definitely following after the PS3 version, but [we] were finally able to come to a point in the PS3 development where some of the staff could take their hands off and start programming the 360 version."

Although development is only two months in, the Xbox 360 version of the game is in a playable state. Should be ready in time for whenever Square Enix decides to finally bring the bloody thing to the West.

It's funny. If you look at this image directly above the MGS4 image in the previous post, the textures on Raiden look terrible in comparison.

Is it just me or is this an extremely retarded way to do ports? Or is this actually better in the long run for the secondary version since?

Even though I consider my 360 my main console, I'm going to end up buying XIII on my PS3, just for the sake of it feeling right... and this.

I'm still puzzled why people care that this game is multiplatform. More people being able to play it is a good thing, right? Wasn't Crystal Tools made for primarily the purpose of the ability to release their games on multiple platforms if need be? I don't remember much bellyaching that FF7 and 8 came out for PC.

No, I'm pretty sure it's retarded. Seems like most multi-plat titles have two teams working simulateously on both consoles (GTA4) OR the port gets a full development cycle and comes out much much later (Eternal Sonata, Bioshock). The Xbox is easy to develop for, but they've been working on XIII for what, five years? And the port should be ready in less than one? I'll believe it when I see it. And it sucks, because I DON'T own a PS3 and don't really have the money to pick one up any time soon.

I wouldn't call it two months old until it has been released for two months.

It'd be more accurate to liken development to conception and the release date to birth, so it'd be more accurate to say that the developers of the 360 version are two months pregnant.

Except that that analogy falls apart, too, when you realize that not every game takes nine months from start of development to release date.

Yeah, I'm thinking too hard about this. Sue me.

Wow, just two months spent on a FF game, just the opening cut-scene completed then?

Let's call it what it is: sloppy seconds, and on 2-5 disks.

I think square should stop feeding us useless information about FFXIII and spend that valuable time making it instead. Then maybe, you know, their games would come out in a reasonable timeframe.

ikiryou: yes. because they definitely couldnt take the code already in development for the past few years and start optimizing it for the 360. they obviously have to start from scratch.

If MGS4 is any indication, multiple discs is way better than installs for games with lots of cutscenes anyway. I don't even have a 360 so I'm obviously getting it on PS3, and would be disappointed if the 360 holds up the game's release, but I'm not stupid enough to think that up to 20 minutes of installs is better than 3 minutes of disc changing. Not to mention the fact that 3 minutes is a high estimate for 4 discs, let alone 2 or 3 as would be more likely. They've already discussed cutting features like the original Japanese audio, I doubt they're going full bore to pad disc count.

Since the White Engine that SE uses for this is multiplatform, it shouldn't matter much for final results.

FFXIII 360 will make gaming history as it will forgo disks and will instead be released on an external USB hard drive.

In my opinion the more consoles that get the game the better, but develop them at the same time.

So what i read is...

"Those of you who invested more into your console and went with the PS3 because of, among other things, the PS brands great legacy of exclusives, could have FFXIII now, but MS are paying us so fucking much to make it multiplat that we have got to make you wait till the shitbox version is ready!"

It's all about the fucking money, and those of us who actually hand over the money get screwed. Brilliant.

I don't know much about game development, but how long could it really take to make the "port". You have the localization already in progress, you know how the animations are going to look, you have an engine already built, etc. I dunno, doesn't seem like it will be tooo much longer now.
