Square Enix once said that DLC had not been planned for Final Fantasy XIII, but the publisher never quite ruled it out and today there are hints that extra content could definitely arrive. XIII's director, Motomu Toriyama, has told gamers that they'll need to keep XIII nearby "forever," because some treats may be on the way.
"From the announcement at E3 2006, we've at last reached this day. Final Fantasy XIII is released today," says Toriyama in a message to Japanese fans. "For the Final Fantasy XIII world, this is the true start. Perhaps if you keep it nearby forever, there will be some additional good things."
So, what could these "good things" be? The obvious answer would be downloadable content, although it's also possible that he might be hinting at a relationship between XIII and other games to be set in the XIII universe, namely Versus and Agito. Perhaps possessing all three games will lead to some cool interactivity between them, or maybe bringing the whole set together summons Captain Planet.
Either way, I'm not planning on giving away my copy any time soon ... that is, as soon as I have a copy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
"If you keep it nearby forever"... cryptic.
That's exactly how I like my hints: definitive.
I really hope this isn't true.
And yes, I know it's optional.
If the game has DLC, I don't buy it.
My PSP/DS libraries are huge now.
Also, the same gal who played Linka from Captain Planet does the voice for the Female Undead PC in WoW. Enjoy that.
I'm tired of paying $70 for games (in Canada) and then two weeks later read about DLC that should have been in the game.
Too bad the Japanese don't seem very happy.
DLC from SquareEnix has been a coming for a while now.
See how things are. Street Fighter 4, the DLCes are all crap, SF4 Turbo could be an expansion pack, a DLC but they will sell as a new game.
Unbelievable!
