Final Fantasy XIII demo gives PS3 a 288 percent sales jump photo

We got a preview of what power a Final Fantasy game has in Japan when we saw the first week sales of the PS3 jump in the same week that the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete Blu-ray collection was released. Sony's console broke sales records with 57,000 units sold that same week. It gets better, though.

Now that we can look back at the month, we're seeing a huge increase in sales for the PlayStation 3. According to the sales rankings from Enterbrain, the system saw a 288 percent increase from last April. They moved 109,000 PS3s on the back of a game demo! Imagine what the full game will do for Sony.

I wonder if the PS3 sales would have seen a increase from a downloadable demo.

Just as 2007 and 2008 were predicted, 2009 will be billed as "the year of the PS3!" 2010 as well, if that is when FFXIII is released in the States.
Maybe Squeenix will a release FFFXIII-2 in 2011, and that can be the year of the PS3 as well.

I'm thinking that the boost would have been more muted if the demo were released separately on the PSN. Why? People who weren't interested in Advent Children wouldn't have bothered to buy it, and thus would need more reason to buy a PS3 (like the Vesperia port). However, since the demo was exclusive to the release, and the PS3 was the only avenue for FFXIII to come out at all in Japan, it pulled the people off the fence, along the lines of "it's as good a time as any" reasoning.

After all, the PS3 plays blu-rays, and can play both the demo and the game. Three for one, so it got them to buy the hardware sooner than they might have otherwise.

That wouldn't work here, since FFXIII is multi-platform, but it might still have an effect if it were bundled with the Advent children release.

Even as a PS3 ownwer, I'm surprised at those figures, simply because they are based on a FF demo.

Damn, the Japanese really are hella crazy for FF.

I just want the movie in glorious, full 1080p, I honestly could care less about the demo, Persona has managed to reignite my love for JRPG's.

Mmmmm Tifa...........Sorry I got distracted.......

*cough*

PS3 is doing fine in Japan anyway, this is good for Sony's Japanese market though. This is clever marketing by Sony for once, unlike their advertising most of the time. But I'm glad they did it.

Yeah that ex exclusive demo was a good idea for Sony and Square. I wonder how much of a boost in sales FF13 will give PS3. Or 360 for that matter.

Any word on whether the demo is also attached to the US Advent Children Blu Ray?

I wonder how badly the PS3 would skyrocket on the announcement of FF7 Remake. XD

I can't believe they would buy the advent movie just so they can play the demo. Why does this sound familiar?

I bought the movie just so I could play the demo so shut your mouth chronic. Plus you have to also remember there was a good ps3 bundle in Japan that came with the movie and demo so that probably helped people decide, not bad to get them all bundled together for one price.

Wait, now I remember. How many people here bought the Zone of Enders game just so they could play the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo?

I wonder if those sales increases are REALLY just from the demo, or if there are other factors over there they just aren't telling us.

@Chronic Logic I did, because ZOE was a good game and with the MGS2 demo, it was a double-win. I don't see what the problem is. There were many who bought the movie for the demo, but also liked the movie. What's wrong with that?

unless every japanese person has some kind of magical hacking tool that unlocks the full game in the demo, this is insane.

good for Sony and Squeenix, I s'pose.

Didn't Kotaku also report that no one else is getting the demo cause they're focusing on the 360 version and don't wanna waste time?

LOL SQUAREENIX

I'm excited for this game, but I'm not gonna murdering children if the demo doesn't come. I'll just pretend playing it from those leaked vids. LOL.

So much hate for AC. The movie was awesome if you kinda take the story with a grain of salt. But ACC is sexy. They re-recorded a lot of the dialogue so it doesn't sound as lame. Now the only awkward part is the "dilly dally shilly shally". Plus the extended fight scenes are the tits, the climax in particular.

But honestly, who didn't see this coming? We all knew FF13 was going to be a system seller for the PS3. It probably won't do as well on the 360, just because of their main audience's interests.
