Final Fantasy XIII 360 will ship on three DVDs photo

When Final Fantasy XIII was announced for Xbox 360, the PS3 fanbase were quick to point out that it would need to ship on multiple DVDs. Now, Square Enix has confirmed the amount of discs that will contain the Xbox 360 version. Three is the magic number.

US retailer GameFly was first to reveal that FF XIII would ship on three DVDs, and Square Enix has confirmed that this will indeed be the case. Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3 will need one Blu-ray disc, but it would appear that not even two DVDs will be enough to contain all that fantasy.

So, three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. If you're the kind of person who judges a game's quality based on the amount of discs it needs, then this story is very, very important to you.

As for sane, normal people, what do you reckon? Has this confirmation changed your perception of the 360 version? Are multiple discs a big deal to you? What version do you think will be best?

Confirmed: Final Fantasy XIII will ship on three DVDs [VG247]

3x DVD's = less data than 1x BR

So, Final Fantasy has indeed been gimped to fit on the 360. You know Squeenix would have filled that BR up if they didn't have to gimp it for the 360 crowd.

Maybe we could have seen some of that "enough content to make a whole game" that they cut out?!?

I feel abit "Meh" about the whole thing. Lost odyssey is on four discs, and that didn't bother me. But if I owned a PS3, too, I would probably consider IT before the 360.
I'm not that excited about the game anyway, will see what the reviews say and base my opinion on that.

You do know EVERY game is gimped to fit on consoles due to hardware limitations? Even your precious PS3 can never hope to match the flexibility and potential of a PC, so I think laughing at the 360 is kind of hypocritical here. ^^

"3x DVD's = less data than 1x BR"

Your logic required the entire BD to be completely full up with data.

Multiple discs don't bother me at all.

I'll probably get it on PS3 just because I associate the playstation controller more closely with Final Fantasy.

I expect the PS3 and 360 versions to be nearly identical. I suspect that the reason it's on multiple discs is due to accommodate the cutscenes without reducing video quality. It really shouldn't have any noticeable effect on the game at all.

As long as the disk swapping is handled sensibly and kept to a minimum then this will have no impact at all on the game itself.

The whole comparison is stupid, the same as the "maxing out the ps3/360" argument. You can make a game as big as you want if you don't bother to compress audio, textures and video, or if your code is a bloated mess. The real challenge is to make it small and still make it play, look and sound good.... just to counterpart, there is a game that gave me a lot of value for every cent I spent on it, and I kept playing it years after ir came out: Diablo 2. I bet I won't play FFXIII as much as I played that one, and you could fit D2+expansion 4 times on a single DVD.

I will get whatever version of FFXIII comes faster and cheaper where I live. I don't mind changing DVD's once in a while. What kind of lazy fuck whines about standing to swap a DVD once every DOZEN of hours?

- Great Monty Python ref.

- Since I only own a PS3 I don't have to bother with DISC Swapping. But to be honest if I had a XBox360 I wouldn't mind at all. DISC swapping was essential at PSone times to get all the great cutscenes in the game you love to see and drool about. Anyway, I am happy for the XBox360 owners that nothing is cut from their version and they can enjoy a full Final Fantasy XIII experience.

Its not how much data the disc can store, but how well the data is used. Simple as that. So no, I don't really care about it being on 3 discs. There are plenty of BDs out there that never reach full capacity anyway, so lets stop pretending the amount of data it could hold means something, OK?

Multiple discs always made for a nice conversation point anyway. You could ask someone which disk they were on in FFVII and you knew where there were and what not to spoil for them. It was a nice point of reference that I kinda miss.

Only reason BD's fill up is due to stuff being uncompressed. The only people who will really notice a difference are audio and videophiles. The normal person won't give a crap... except maybe your average console-war obsessed commenter.

Lost Odyssey had 3 disks and that in no way served as a downside.

The amount of disks doesn't really count for me. Some of the older final fantasy's were on three, to four disks, and that was fine. And on the 360, some of rpg's which were great like Blue Dragon, Star Ocean and Lost Odyssey, all had mutiple disks.

You know what's really fucking sad? In my race with my best friends to have the better gamerscore, I've become a true Achievement Whore, which has led to me constantly considering picking up the 360 version, or both, but only playing the 360 version. The PS3 version would be because I'd feel bad for my PS3.

But in the end, I'm sure I'll be able to overcome my pathetic addiction to "g" and stick with the PS3 version, considering I spent 600 bucks on that fucker partly to play this game.

I hope.

I liked the fact that Mass Effect 2 came on two DVDs, because it reassured me of the amount of gameplay I was receiving for the price. The same, I'm relatively certain, will go for Final Fantasy XII. The fact that I will have to change my DVD twice during what I expect to be more than fifty hours of gameplay, is a very very minor inconvenience.

Having seen the trailer in 1080p, you'd be a fool not to get this on Blu-Ray.

I don't even like FF games, and wished they just made a 12 hour movie instead of chopping it up with annoying RPGing.

The game might just be worth it for the cutscenes alone in HD.

when i played FFVII, it was awesomw. the sense of accomplishment and moving into a 'new world' as such meant you got more satisfaction from the game. and for the same price as ps3 i get more physical stuff, and for a horder like me that means a lot. it also means you can have the 'what disc are you up to? you'll love dics X'

:D

I've been disk swapping since the PS1, I don't see what the big deal is. FF7 took 3, VIII and IX took 4. Hell, one of my favorite JRPGs of the generation was on 4.
Hell, I've even played through every .hack game, that's not just 4 discs in one game but $50 per disk (+3 for GU).

The ONLY thing we'd have to hope for is that unlike Lost Odyssey, they don't put that last disk in a paper sleeve that leaves a residue causing disk read errors. That was a real bummer.

Though, I'm still getting the PS3 version of the game. ^____^ Hazzah!!!

While I don't usually mind multiple disks (some of the best games are on multiple disks) a lot of compression had to have been done. The file size was said to have been 38GB on the PS3 blu-ray disk. 3 DVD-DLs can only hold about 25GB. That's compressing 13GB.

Plus, people that have been on the little idiotic tour bus that saw both versions side by side said that the 360 version doesn't run as smooth as the PS3 version.

But while I'll possibly be getting this, I'll probably get it on the PS3 (lead platform is usually better).

No one really cares except for stupid fan boys. Yeah, it's a bit more convenient having it all on one disc, but are people really that much of lazy assholes that bitch about having to swap discs after hours upon hours of gameplay like twice? I could understand if it kept asking you to swap between disc one and disc one and disc three over and over again after short periods of play time, but we all know it's not going to be like that. It's kind of like dumb asses who complained about Diablo III being too colorful or Left 4 Dead 2 coming too soon and not just being one huge DLC.

So, Final Fantasy has indeed been gimped to fit on the 360.

Yes! It makes sense now. Square Enix clearly hate PS3 owners, and insist on inferior quality games all round to satisfy the small install base for 360 in Japan.

...are you sure?

Multiple DVD's may (must?) have affected game's design, right to the progression of the story and the linearity. They need to make sure the user doesn't have to swap the DVD's so often..

Other than that, you could use compression to allow the data to be presented at nearly the same quality. So I am not going to speculate about data size, but surely, the segmentation of data *has* to affect something..

Actually, you know how this problem could be solved easily. Install all three discs to the hard drive, and SquareEnix could easily just have the game require only one disc to play through it all. There, problem solved! No more disc swapping, and no more multi-disc dipshit complaints.

so...Final Fantasy 13 is coming on 3/9 for Playstation 3 and XBox 360. The 360 version will ship on 3 DVDs. It was also first introduced during E3 in 2006. The Japanese version was released on 12/17/2009 (12+17+2009=2038). FFXIII is also part of a sub-series which will include exactly 3 games. Famitsu rated the game 39 out of 40.
Still don't see a pattern? consider this: how many regular female party characters in main series FF games? How many numbered FF games on every major home console?
